His last game and it must suck that Italy got bombed out but what a player he was - A good guy and from what I've heard a closet Red. At least that was always his favourite PL team :)

I used to like the guy but when he elected to wear a number 88 shirt that made it pretty clear that he's a bit of a cunt. No amount of talking could convince me that he was unaware of the Hitler connotations. Prick.

Top man. I have a lot of respect for him. A true leader, and conducted himself well in both triumph and defeat.

His happiness when Ireland beat Italy to go through to the next round in the last Euro championships made me think he had put a bet on it happening.

Really? I have no idea what you mean. Care to educate a brother? X

88 is established code for HH i.e. Heil Hitler. He came out claiming that 88 was chose because it represented 4 balls or something like that. He was clearly making an outrageous political statement and that has clouded my view of him ever since

I never heard of this until I read the link Doc sent.

I wouldnt attach too much weight to it, he would hardly be the first or the last Italian footballer in right wing tendancies , also didnt he change his shirt number as soon as complaints were made ?

Im not sure how widely acknowleged the use of '88' even is outside of the inbred Neo's in America

Is the significance of the number 88 really that well known?
In Italy I would have thought so, yes. They seem to love their fascism the Italians.

I was in Rome earlier this year and walking from our hotel to a local restaurant. We had to wait ages to cross the road as a big march was taking place. Decorated floats, huge flags (with suspiciously Swastika-like symbols), police closing the roads etc. etc. Mostly angry looking young white men, but a surprising number of locals came out to cheer them on.

The point is that for Buffon it was known, and there is no other rationale for it. He changed it because there was outcry from the Jewish community (for whom it is also known). He's a fucking Nazi. Good goalie though.

There's so much going on in that article. The Dukes of Hazard. A Robbie Keane goal. Nazism. Testicles.

I kinda believe him though to be honest. I mean let's be realistic, would anyone really have a shirt number with a secret code for Hitler? It's not exactly cool is it?

Cool is a relative thing. This guy probably thinks he's the coolest cat in the world.

It's not exactly secret either...

But even that looks tame compared with the fuss “Gigi” caused when he wanted to wear the number 88 at Parma in 2000.

“H” is the eigth letter of the alphabet and 88 equates to HH, or Heil Hitler.

People were shocked in Italy when the news was spread.Prior to that he was seen wearing a shirt bearing the slogan ” Boia chi molla”- “Death to cowards” which was used by fascists in Benito Mussolini’s day during World War II.

“Fascist”, “Nazi”. Tough accusations were levelled at him at the time. The Italian Jewish community got shirty with him.And many people in Italy were stunned.

However, he strongly rejected allegations that he has Neo-nazi sympathies: “I chose the number 88 because it reminds me of four balls and in Italy we all know what it means to have balls : strength and determination”, he said.

“I wanted 00 but the league told me that was impossible.I also considered 01 but that was not considered a proper number”, he insisted attempting to save his face.

Although he lacked credibility and few people believed him.

I think Buffon is in that Michael Jackson category - he was so good it's okay to appreciate him despite the dark side
