Devastating performance in patches. We turned up the heat at will and went through the gears that West Ham couldnt live with.
We could have had 8 or 9 really and had little to worry about at the back.

Allison - 6 not much to do, but his kicking wasnt great and one terrible flappy punch could have cost us.

Robertson - 9 breathless and breathtaking. Didnt put a foot long all day. Was in both halves over and over. Brilliant

Virgil - 8 dominated at the back. Marshalled the defence.

Gomez - 6 would be a 5 for the first half and a 7 for the second. Really upped his game after halftime

Trent - 6 as above

Wijnaldum - 8 excellent first showing. Dominated the West ham midfielders

Milner - 10 motm. You wont see a better midfield performance. Ever. Anywhere. 95 passes 93% accuracy. 1 assist. Could have had about 3. Wonderful. Love him

Keita - 8 great start to his life in red. Was wonderful first half. At the heart of all attacking

Mane - 9 just so threatening. Linked brilliantly with Keita and was the pick of the front 3

Salah - 7 not at his best, made some odd choices and was a smidge greedy.

Bob - 7 worked damn hard and lead the press, but his radar was off. Not his best day.

Had Milner at 10 before I even opened the thread, he's getting better with age.

Great start and there's more to come from a lot of players

Allison - 6 - I'd love to just forget about the GK position altogether. That'd be the ultimate way to measure the success of Allison. I have a horrible feeling he'll be a let down though - fingers crossed.

TAA - 6 - Even though he was a little off today, it was plain to see why he is in the side ahead of Clyne. He is a bit like this teams version of Dani Alves (I'm not saying they're the same player). His range of passing gives us another dimension.

Gomez - 6 - A few dodgy moments but untroubled otherwise. I've always liked him but he needs to start to demonstrate some maturity if he wants his career to take the next step here.

VVD - 8 - Picked up where he left off from last season.

Robertson - 9 - One or two lapses at the back but otherwise really good and linked up brilliantly with Mane / Keita.

Milner - 10 - Like a fine wine. MOM.

Wijnaldum - 8 - Good performance but for such a good player (former attacking one at that) I find it hugely irritating that he can't quite get it together in the final third.

Keita - 9 - Can tell that it'll take a while to see the best of him as he gets used to the team and the pace of the league but great debut.

Mane - 9 - Looked really threatening all game and I was wondering whether the arrival of his buddy Keita will spur him on in a friendly competitive sort of way.

Firmino - 7 - Looked sluggish but worked tirelessly as usual and held the ball up quite nicely on several occasions. Not bad.

Salah - 8 - I think we need to lower our expectations of him. He got a goal, got into great positions all game and played some great one - twos. He made a few bad decisions but not the end of the world in a game like this. I did think that he let things get to his head towards the end of last season as he was chasing the golden boot and various records but he seemed okay today.

Allison - 7 Clean sheet a couple of iffy moments and some very good distribution, air of confidence that you get from good goalkeepers

Robertson - 8 Hes basically a younger James Milner. 3 lungs endless stamina and always on the overlap. This guy will be in the team for probably the next 7 years. Set up 2 goals today and allowed nothing down the left hand side

Virgil - 8 another day another cool as fuck dominant performance

Gomez - 7 started off sloppy and grew into the game as it went on, one excellent interception in the first half. I may be in the minority here but I think hes still got all the assets to be a top class defender

Trent - 5 One great pass to free Keita for the first goal aside he was poor. Positionally, tactically, at some point Klopp is going to have to accept hes not a defender. Improved in the 2nd half as we didnt have to do any defending

Wijnaldum - 8 metronomic simplicity from Gini, he was as good as Ive seen him for us, different role but he excelled. Hes a top class utility player and it showed today

Milner - 9 he must have soaked some meth amphetamines into that headband, the guys just never stops. Im not sure where he fits when Hendo and Fabinho are fit let alone Ox but its a great problem to have

Keita - 9 what a start, looked like he was born to play in a red shirt. Most impressed with his patience. He didnt just pick the right pass he waited until the exact time. He Mane and Salah will be lethal once the all sync up

Mane - 9 hes a boss this fella, we are lucky nobody else has realised it yet, defenders just want nothing to do with him. Excellent performance today

Salah - 7 not his sharpest but grabbed one goal and should have had another

Fun Bobby - 6 worked hard but looked as if he was still carrying a bit of Ipanema beach with him, like Salah he will get better by the game

Just a word on Keita.

I quite often look at midfielders and think they shirk the ball, a LOT of midfielders run along with the opponents to avoid being an option.

For 90 minutes Keita looked for space between players. He didnt hide for a second. Wonderful to see

Allison 7, a couple of saves but some small errors that were"nt punished. VVD 8 he did what it says on the tin. Robbo 8.5 he got an assist Gomez & TAA 6.5 each they looked shakey early doors. Gini 7. Keita, Milner, Salah Mane & Bobby all get a 9.

Allison - 6 - I'd love to just forget about the GK position altogether. That'd be the ultimate way to measure the success of Allison. I have a horrible feeling he'll be a let down though - fingers crossed.

I think these are spot on. Henderson, Shaqiri and Studge (obviously) have all done well, too

The pre-West Ham thing was more speaking to superstition as other posters did.

But generally I've just seen us fail too many times to get overly optimistic!
I’ve always felt that for the last couple of decades, but this squad and Klopp are really making me believe.
I really think we can win the league this year.

Thought Alisson was very good. Great distribution bar one poor kick with his left. Caught just about everything and was very calm. One punch out from a cross that I think he had more control over than it seemed.

Its weird reading people having such doubts about our new goalkeeper. He'll be a great signing. No doubt.

Alisson - the dudette will be good.
TAA - in/out but his brilliance on the ball is key for the 1st goal ...
Robbo - great game, 8 million quid ... THANK YOU HULL!
Gomez - bar one brain fart in the 1st half, was very solid.
VvD - goliath
Gini - ok but very wasteful in the final 3rd.
Milner - excellent
Keita - he's such class.
Bobby - will be fine preseason game for him.
Salah - will be fine preseason game for him
Mane - excellent.

Hendo - will be fine preseason game for him.
Shaq - Shakira shakira
STUDGE ! GOAL! Happy for him ... I really feel something good will happen for him this year - he's got a big role for us this year.

Liverpool 4 West Ham United 0: Match Ratings

by Ben Johnson | Aug 12, 2018

THAT was a summer, weren’t it?
What have you been up to? I’ll be honest, I’ve tried to swerve The Reds, there; I haven’t seen a minute of pre season, didn’t really get involved in all the transfer voyeurism, just sort of lived for a bit, which was sound. It meant going into the game today I was genuinely excited to see what all our new lads are like. That’s nice, isn’t it?
When I say I tried to swerve The Reds, I mean that’s a bit like trying to swerve your own face. It’s always there, gegging in, bouncing around in mirrors like there is no tomorrow. Here he is, the big bellend. I mean I can literally see my nose as I am typing this, just there in my peripheral vision; cooey, here I am. The Reds are the same, lad.
I mean this is me below trying not to think about The Reds:
Picture the scene: a man sits at a desk, gazing into the middle distance, he looks weary, worried, pain etched across his face. All around him is a scene of utter greyness. Everything is grey, or shades thereof, in spite of the scorching weather outside. He is reliving something over and over in his mind. The opening, slow, somewhat haunting bars of Fiesta by the Pogues is on a loop ha in his head, forever looping:
De De De De De
De De De De De
With no end in site. No payoff.
Something snaps him out of his slumber — the record jumps.
The Joycey alarm.
Colour fills the screen. Every colour imaginable. Flowers are falling from the sky, filling the room, rainbows shoot across the vista. A whistle blows, the beat kicks in. All of a sudden the man is marching around the room, party poppers are going off all around him. Dancing safari animals are marching in a procession behind him, three rhino’s on hind legs swinging their arms in unison to the beat. Monkeys wearing Bermuda shorts are hanging from the light fittings playing tiny guitars:
Ey ey ey ey
Aarrrriiiibbbbaaaa
The man leading the march is transformed. Gone is the worry, the stress, his hair is growing back, he looks 15 years younger. His kecks have somehow disappeared and he is marching, cock and balls swinging in the breeze underneath a rainbow-coloured grass skirt, a coconut filled with rum in one hand, pyro in the other.
He leaves his house, door ajar and turns right towards town. The postman joins the back of the conga. Next door’s cat is getting a piggy back off the dog from over the road, happiness fills the world, as far as the eye can see. The procession carries on in an endless party, towards town, the townest of towns. At the end of time, if you look closely enough, on the horizon, as the sun sets for the final time you will still see that dancing party, forever lost in a world of happiness. Fiesta.
Anyway. Yer, jibbed The Reds there, didn’t I?
Alisson: 9
Pretty sure if he made a video of his summer holidays I would project it onto the Liver Buildings. Fucking transcribe it onto rock in hieroglyphics then grind the rocks up and shoot them into my toe. Extra two points for not being big Si or Lagos Kagos. Was made up with him catching it and that. Haven’t seen that for ages.
Trent: 7
Thought he looked a bit rusty but then in fairness he’s just come back off holiday. I was away last week and was still falling asleep at me desk on Thursday and eating me dinner at 11am. Went the gym Friday had to get off after half an hour on the bike and have a breather in me car before I started driving. So you know, he will be sound next week. The ball to Keita for the second was pretty special.
Joe Gomez: 7
Looks skinny, doesn’t he? Just had to ask the lads what his name was there which seems a bit harsh. Soz Joe. Reckon he has been on the same diet over the summer that Shaqiri is currently been lashed on. Just beans and the occasional fish. Didn’t have much to do but done it all pretty well.
Virgil: 9
Jesus Christ. He’s like a giant playing with kids mate, got a Snozcumber in his arse pocket. He makes it look so easy. Imagine playing next to him.
Andy Robertson: 9
Did he set up all the goals and all the chances? How long has it been since we had two boss full backs? Twenty years? Absolutely brilliant, there. What a fella.
Gini: 8
We played so well he didn’t really even need to play, but he pinged it about and looked sound. Wanted to see him playing a bit further forward and so did he.
Milner: 9
Thought he was man of the match, there. The sinew. Joined us together like no-one’s business. Grafted more than everyone and does unbelievably for the second to keep it in. I wonder if he has to wear that headband all the while. On the ale like fucking McEnroe.
Keita: 9
First time I’ve seen him play. Fucking hell, he is glorious. He might be one of the five greatest players to play for Liverpool, the other four are Gegsi and our front three.
Mo Salah: 9
He is class, isn’t he? Scored, has grew his hair a bit and still loves Allah. Is right, lad.
Sadio Mane: 9
Bloody hell, this might the best Liverpool team I have ever seen. Seriously. Mane isn’t our best player. That’s crackers that, isn’t it?
Firmino: 8
Thought he grew into it. He isn’t our best player either and is better than almost all our players since 1990. These Reds, mate. It’s hard to see how this front three could get any better. How many times were they all stood in row ready to tap it in?
SUBS
Karius: 9

Looks boss on that bench, there. Wear your jeans next week, kid.
Sheridan Shaqiri: 7
Wasn’t arsed in the slightest about him till Charlie Adam questioned his professionalism. Got his whole body tattooed on my body the next day. My chest hair is doing a pretty good impression of his jig, there. Had to stitch some paper to my sides there, as I wasn’t wide enough. Built like a fucking big armchair, isn’t he? Might be my favourite ever.

DAN Sturridge: 8
Lovely wrigglies. I’ve missed them so much.
Non Sub – Big Si The Mig: 8
I hope we didn’t even give him a ticket. Tux in town times when he leaves, la.

Sadio Mane: 9
Bloody hell, this might the best Liverpool team I have ever seen. Seriously. Mane isn’t our best player. That’s crackers that, isn’t it?
this is so true

Keita: 9
He might be one of the five greatest players to play for Liverpool, the other four are Gegsi and our front three.
hahahaha

Shaqiri: good cameo but wanted to highlight his enthusiasm. I have never seen a player display this much joy in playing for us. He was hugging Klopp and beaming when he set foot on the pitch.

VVD tried to turn Allison into Karius and was still a bit slower than he should be. Gomez was sound.

I’ve always felt that for the last couple of decades, but this squad and Klopp are really making me believe.
I really think we can win the league this year.

Same here, despite the obvious problems with cup finals, I just feel this is a team of winners with the right mentality and everyone is on the same page. Transfers are good, style of play is excellent and the manager is infectious in just about every possible positive way.

Once we win a league cup or something it'll come together completely.

Just a word on Keita.

I quite often look at midfielders and think they shirk the ball, a LOT of midfielders run along with the opponents to avoid being an option.

For 90 minutes Keita looked for space between players. He didnt hide for a second. Wonderful to see

He also allayed my fears about his red card propensity. A couple of times he went in for perfectly fair tackles then threw his arms up in the air as if to plead with the ref not to show the yellow. Perfect, I think his red cards were just basically down to playing in a snowflake league where those same tackles would be straight reds.
