Rodgers calls 17-year-old Yesil into squad for Young Boys clash due to lack of attacking options

By DOMINIC KING

Liverpool's lack of striking options will see untried 17-year-old Samed Yesil catapulted into the squad for their opening Europa League group game.
When Liverpool sanctioned the £1million deal to bring Yesil from Bayer Leverkusen on the eve of transfer deadline day, they did so with one eye on the future.
Yesil even admitted in his first interview with the club’s official website that he felt it would be “one or two years” before he was ready to play for the first team.

However, the subsequent chain of events that saw Andy Carroll move to West Ham on loan and long-term target Clint Dempsey join Tottenham from Fulham has opened up an unexpected path for the German.
Brendan Rodgers has confirmed Yesil will be part of the group that travels to Switzerland on Wednesday and it is highly likely he will be one of several youngsters involved against Young Boys Berne on Thursday.
Rodgers has already blooded youngsters Raheem Sterling and Adam Morgan in the Europa League this season and that theme will continue with Yesil and Spanish midfielder Fernando Suso, 19, both prominent in the manager’s thoughts.
‘He will certainly be fast-tracked,’ said Rodgers. ‘I watched him play (for Germany) against England Under-19s (two weeks ago). He scored two terrific goals and set up another (as Germany won 3-1). He will be involved in the Europa League game.
‘The biggest thing for young players now is that the introduction of Raheem has given them hope. All I have done is given him a chance.

'There will be that chance for Yesil and one or two other boys over this period of months now.’
Yesil is certainly a player with potential. He has scored goals at a brisk rate through age group levels for his country – he won the silver shoe at the Under-17 World Cup in Mexico last year – but there is little doubt he will need time to adjust to a new style at Liverpool.
Liverpool have struggled to score this season, with Luis Suarez left to carry the burden and it is almost certain that, with a game against Manchester United at the weekend, the Uruguayan will stay on Merseyside this week.
But Rodgers is not concerned about his side’s lack of goals and is adamant things will change sooner rather than later.
‘What people don’t realise is we are in the top three teams in terms of efforts on goal,’ said Rodgers.
‘Our penetration is good. We keep the ball longer but our emphasis is to score. But our conversion is not good.
‘We have had 17 attempts on average per game. But the conversion rate isn’t that good. We need to improve that. We can’t have so many chances to score a goal. But we’ll get there.’

I like the fact that we're going to take on Young Boys with some young boys.

NB : not in a paedo sort of way.

Can Şahin play?

--------------Reina----------------
Kelly--Coates--Carra-Enrique
--------Hendo---Şahin-----------
-------------Suso-----------------
Downing--Yesil---Assaidi----

I'm guessing that's probably too many newbies/youngsters and we'll see more of a mix.

Yesil's 18, which is hardly a baby by today's football standards, and he's been brought up in a much more impressive environment than his English equivalents: he has a mature temperament, a cool head and good experience as part of the hyper-professional German squad. So the hacks can stop their shock-horror headlines, he deserves his chance NOW!

I don't think Rodgers will play a seriously weakened side. I think that secretly he quite fancies Young Boys.

He puts the 'Yes' in 'Yes we can' and the 'il' in 'make the opponents ill'!!

Hey Yesil,
he's so fine,
he blow my mind
Hey Yesil! Hey Yesil!

That's a far more gentlemanly version than the one I had in mind, namely "Yesil-ly bugger, of course I can cope at this level".

Chris Bascombe:

Liverpool, meanwhile, head to Switzerland on Wednesday to prepare for a Europa League tie with Young Boys, with manager Brendan Rodgers ready to save his star players for the weekend.

Rodgers believes his last European fixture, at home to Heart of Midlothian, took too much out of his side when they lost the subsequent Premier League game to Arsenal.

He won’t make the same mistake again. Pepe Reina, Suárez and captain Gerrard will remain on Merseyside to prepare for the visit of United.

Rodgers is also considering leaving other senior players at home or on the bench as he gives youth a chance.

Defender Andre Wisdom has been drafted in, alongside recent signing German starlet Samed Yesil, 18, who may be fast-tracked into the first team in the absence of striking cover.

Liverpool, though, will still be able to rely on the more experienced Jamie Carragher, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson for the game in Berne.

On a side note, Henderson is a great squad player to have. Hopefully being out of the firing line for a bit will allow him to get on and improve.

LIVERPOOL FC will be severely depleted for today’s opening game in the NextGen Series against Inter Milan – but Academy director Frank McParland couldn’t be happier.

The young Reds face a daunting test against last season’s inaugural winners of the under-19s Champions League style tournament after travelling to Italy without the services of Conor Coady, Andre Wisdom, Suso, Samed Yesil and Adam Morgan.

They have all been promoted to the first team squad for tomorrow’s Europa League clash with Young Boys.

McParland (pictured) insists the fact so many of Rodolfo Borrell’s first choice line-up will be absent in Milan is a source of pride rather than frustration.

Ok, hopefully then it's something like:

-----------------Jones------------------
Wisdom--Carra--Coates--Robbo
------------Hendo--Şahin------------
--Downing-----Suso-----Pacheco
--------------Morgan/Yesel---------
