Benteke - BOOOOOO the puns

So you have to back to players who played there 10, 20, 25 and 30 years ago to prove your point?
The number that don't make it massively outweight those that do

That's the same everywhere.

I don't think Bas Dost is good enough for us but he is leading scorer in the Bundesliga.

I didn't think Pelle was good enough for Premier League either. We shall see how he gets on long term.

Bony is boss.

We should tell City we'll take Bony and 35 mill for Sterling.

I apologise for my Roque Santa Cruz comparison. What I meant was next Emile Heskey - for £30 fucking million. Get to fuck. This type of knee jerk, but supposedly well planned raid is all that is wrong with our transfer policy. Look at the queue of clubs who finish above us trying to sign him.

Plus and I know I should go to Wikipedia for this but hasn't he got a poor disciplinary record and a poor injury record. If this is not correct then strike it from the record.

So for all of the above, I'm out.

Aston Villa manager Tim Sherwood is convinced Benteke, wants to stay at Villa Park next season.

Are we now taking anything that gilet wearing nobhead says seriously? I'm not.

If the right bid comes for Benteke they will sell. I just hope any bid from us is not "the right bid".

I'm in the "no" camp.

It's a tough one because he does look great at times but the "Darren Bent" risk is just too much to take on.

We've already seen this season that the group of players we have at the moment are very much geared towards playing with a particular type of forward and spending 30M to buy someone who is very different to that just seems crazy unless that player is a superstar in waiting and worth the transition.

Remember that feeling you used to get when watching Suarez and Torres in their swaggering fucking prime for us? Y'know, the one where you used to just laugh at how good they were.

Not gonna get that from Christian Benteke really are we?

I honestly can't believe there is actually firm interest from us. Must be agent talk.
He'd cost at least 30m-35m, and anyone could surely see, even the dickheads in the transfer committee, that what we totally lacked this season was the movement upfront that Sturridge, and especially Suarez, provided.
Whether it be the constant running into space, in behind, or the quick incisive one-two's that are still effective today, probably 100 years after a couple of players first did it, but one which only Coutinho and Gerrard seem capable of doing for us (baffling) post Suarez.

Benteke's not the man to bring that kind of play to our side. And it'll seriously hurt us against most sides that want to park the bus and wait for counter attacks.

No to Benteke. He's OK and that's the best that can be said about him.
It'll cost us 20-odd million and 80k a week to sign yet another 'OK' player to put with the other 15 we've got.
Pass.

Exactly this.

Pretty much what I said.

He'll never be the kind of striker we need.

So who is the Suarez or Torres of next season? When we signed them they were right in amongst the hottest strikers in Europe. We're just not going to attract that type this summer.

In today's market and for this club, I'm afraid it does.

Until that awful cycle is broken, we'll massively be outspending teams such as West Ham and Southampton and then pretty much competing with the same clubs for league position.

I don't disagree but this summer our realistic options are:

1) do little in order to stop the spending bleed...and accept how this would bind the hands of a new manager
2) pay over the odds for players the CL teams don't want...and accept our rebuild is going to take time

Or (3) find value for money players that don't cripple us financially.

I think you hit the nail on the head in terms of rebuilding taking time and that's exactly the reason why we don't really need to take 30M risks.

Agreed...but 3) is much the hardest to deliver and therefore the least likely to happen. The fact that it's also by far the most attractive option neatly sums up our predicament.

It'd be really fucking stupid if spend that kind of money on him. We have Sturridge, Origi and potentially Ings. If we are buying another, then we need to be spending £30m on a player who can replicate the kind of movement and catalyst type impact that Suarez had.

I like Benteke. But not at 30m.

20m max - But that's unrealistic so we just need to move on.

I don't know about that. Spurs lifted themselves up to the chasing pack largely by buying smart.

It's harder to make the jump into the top four (as Spurs have found out) but we have got a good base from which to try. If nothing else we've been doing (2) for a good while now and it's not worked. Statement signings often tend to be disasters.

Rebuilding will take time; that was always accepted.I think we also need to accept that to unearth value we cannot look for the most obvious. What we seem unable to do these days is find value in players on a consistent basis. Look at players such as Hyypiä, Hamman, MacAlister, Alonso, Garcia, Torres, Suarez, Arbeloa, Coutinho, Sturridge, Benayoun to mention but a few. Mascherano was worthy every £ we spent on him. We also hardly overpaid for decent players such as Crouch, Pennant, Finnan etc.

By the way, even with a frightening strike partnership such as Suarez and Sturridge last year we still came up short. A good reflection would have seen our acknowledging that fact, and even more urgently given that Suarez was leaving. We all know what happened, and unless we change that approach we'll see that tragic sequence repeated this summer whether Rodgers stays or not.

I don't know why you don't just say that you really like Benteke and want us to sign him, instead of pretending he's a crucial part of some grand strategy.

To be honest, that's not a million miles from where I am on this. £30m is a bit steep of course but for £25m I'm in.
