The news of this kid joining was mentioned a while back. Looks like it's official now. Ex-Porto... Ljinders' recommendation maybe?

Portuguese midfielder Paulo Alves is on a mission to make the grade at Liverpool and prove FC Porto wrong.

The 17-year-old is preparing to move to the Kirkby Academy after the Reds last month agreed a nominal fee with AD Sanjoanense, who play in the third tier in his homeland.

Alves, who is known as Paulinho, is likely to start off in Neil Critchley’s under-18s squad but is hoping to progress quickly up the ranks.

He spent seven years on the books at FC Porto but left in 2014 frustrated at his lack of opportunities. He made the move to Sanjoanense where he made a dozen first-team appearances last season.

The teenager impressed Liverpool Academy staff during a trial last season and penned a contract with the Reds in May before returning to Portugal. Now he can’t wait to return to Merseyside and get started.

“The facilities at Liverpool are spectacular and the people of the Academy received me very well,” he said.

“They’ve asked me to work hard every day and I’ve been told the young players have many opportunities to train regularly with the first team.

“I just have to grab the opportunity and demonstrate quality.

“Since I knew that my future was at Liverpool, my dream has been to play at Anfield. I hope someday to achieve it.

“It’s a dream come true after the great disappointment of last year. It was not easy to abandon FC Porto and head to a smaller club.

“But I didn’t play as much as I wanted for Porto. I felt I was no longer happy there so I decided to leave.

“I chose to go to Sanjoanense because of the possibility to integrate into the senior squad.

"I ended up having one of the happiest times of my life. It was a spectacular year for me.”
 
Has one of these signings ever worked? You have to be brilliant for your age to succeed at a club like LFC.

But if guys like this can be fattened up and taken to market, the academy is doing its job. Obvious best case scenario is a regular first teamer.

Triple loan swoop by Swindon Town: Stewart, Kent and Williams. Looks like the manager is leaving to join Sheffield Wednesday though, so not sure what's going to happen to this. There are a couple of familiar faces at Swindon - there's Rodgers' son, Anton, while the keeper, Tyrell Belford, was a Liverpool Reserve.

Swindon had a similar relationship with Tottenham too. Swindon's owner Lee Power (previously their DoF) is apparently the one responsible for transfers.
 
Good moves for them. Williams is an interesting young player - possibly another surprise success like Flanagan IMO.

We're getting these loans out early this year it seems. Usually it feels like they happen only after the pre-season tours or towards the end of the window, but so far, we've sorted three out, if you count Danny Ward to Aberdeen. It could be us being more proactive in offering our guys to clubs this season or clubs valuing the quality of our youngsters and trying to get in before others. Either way, it's a good thing for both the club and these youngsters.
 
Michael Beale has said they're being very proactive in getting lots of them loans. Seems like there'll be a lot, possibly double figures. He said they don't want any players getting comfortable at u21 level, which I think is the right approach.

The likes of Wilson, Kent, Stewart, Dunn, Canos, Brannagan, Rossiter, and Ojo could all end up going out.

On a damp and showery night at Turners Cross, Liverpool’s development squad recorded a well-deserved victory over Cork City. A large crowd of Irish based Reds supporters will be encouraged by what they saw from the club’s stars of the future. On the basis of the display, there are at least a few who could be playing at Anfield for the first team at some stage in the future.

Toni Gomes gave Liverpool the lead in the 16th minute, mainly thanks to the creativity of Bobby Adekanye. The player signed from Barcelona showed that he is one to watch for the future as he was involved in most of what Liverpool did well in the first half. While Yan Dianda got the second goal for the Merseysiders.

One of the major aspects of the night which City will take away from it is the performance of City keeper Alan Smith. He produced a number of fine saves and proved that he is a good replacement should anything happen to Mark McNulty in the near future.

Cork used the game as an opportunity to use a few players on trial with the club. Other than that, there was a mixture of players from City’s U19 and first teams.

Liverpool’s Development squad started the brighter of the two sides. Callum Nicholas and Adekanye were looking lively down their respective wings in the early stages, both showing their skill and good passing ability as they tried to find an opening goal. The pair both looked a threat any time they had the ball throughout the half and along with Gomes, they were always a danger for Cork.

Liverpool took the lead on 16 minutes, when Gomes was on hand to knock the ball home after stretching his foot out to beat City defender Conor McCarthy to the ball. Adekanye did very well to set up the goal, showing the lightening pace he has to beat City full back for the night Saki, and put the cross into the box.

City showed glimpses of what they could, but it was the English side who were the dominant side in terms of creating chances. Ben Woodburn’s shot was saved by Smith in the 33rd minute, following good link up play from Nicholas and Adekanye once again.

Cork struggled to put any meaningful attacks together overall during the opening 45 minutes. Normally second in command for the goalkeepers jersey, Smith made a good impression overall and did his very best, making numerous top saves.

Nicholas showed his immense composure in the 39th minute, when under pressure from the City defence, he got his shot away but Smith did very good to save.

Following a spell on the bench recently, Gavan Holohan was keen to make the most of the time on the Turners Cross pitch for City. Just before the break, he went on a menacing run towards the Liverpool box but his shot was saved well by Wheeler.

Liverpool came out for the second half with a completely different starting eleven. Smith remained in goal for City and he made yet another top save in the opening minutes of the second half.

Dianda was another player for Liverpool who looked purposeful with the ball at his feet and was Liverpool’s standout performer in the second half.

Caulfield introduced more of the under 19’s in the form of the likes of Ellis and Gill to try and search for an equaliser. It was Ellis who made an impact right away, crossing for Danny Morrissey, who just headed wide as he dived in for the ball.

Liverpool made it 2-0 in the 71st minute, as it was Dianda who got on the end of a ball from Masterson over the top and he slotted the ball into the back of the net.

Late on, Morrissey went close for Cork, but he shot into the side netting after he went around Caiomhin Kelleher in the Liverpool goal. Danny O’Connell did well to carve out a chance in stoppage time. But it wasn’t to be for Cork, as they will hope the game time given to some of the fringe players will benefit Cork in their run in to the SSE Airtricity League campaign.

This feels like a new generation of u18s now, with Kent, Wilson et al moved up for good. Will be interesting to get a good look at them and see how they get on in the youth cup.

A front 6 of something like Alexander-Arnold, Kane, Whyte, Dhanda, Adekanye, Gomes looks really promising.

'Contract dispute'
So here's an update from our LFC editor Andy Kelly on Jerome Sinclair's future.
Basically, there's a contract dispute brewing. Sinclair has one year left on his deal, but a new one has not been agreed with the club as of yet. He was left out of the squad for the Far East tour as a result, and has been with the U21s in Ireland.
At present, his future looks rather uncertain, to say the least. Shame, because he's got talent.

Lawrence Vigouroux played 45 mins in Swindon's 1-4 friendly defeat to WBA yesterday.

Town did improve after switching to three at the back. Byrne, Obika and Stewart all took sighters at Myhill’s goal, before Kasim eventually found the back of the net with a low, placed, effort from 25 yards.

As the game reached the break, buoyed by their avenue back into the contest, Town’s play increased in confidence.

They continued to show that same swagger in the first 10 minutes after half time and had a good chance to get an equaliser.

After Byrne had wasted good position having got in behind the last Albion man, Stewart picked up the pieces and worked a yard in the box, but blazed his shot into the Town End.

The ball pinged from end to end for the rest of the half as changes robbed the game of its flow. Town introduced a couple of new faces to their seemingly endless list of trialists.
Lawrence Vigoroux, a Liverpool youth team stopper, entertained with his erratic distribution after being introduced at the break and Richard Eckersly, formerly a Manchester United junior, looked steady at right-back.

Oh, didn't realize that Vig's on trial there. Looks like Swindon Town's become the go-to club for us to farm out youngsters for experience. Hopefully they'll get promoted this time round so that we'll have a Championship club to send our guys to in the season after this.
