2014/15: Young Guns, Reserves and Academy

Fairclough is moaning a bit that the team hasn't been more aggressive and urgent in the second half, but personally I don't mind this. Unlike the senior team in recent games these lads are holding on to the ball, using the width of the pitch MUCH more and keeping the ball moving whilst resisting the temptation to play a rash ball when the space isn't there. Yes, we should have scored a couple more, given our superiority in terms both of pace and skill, but at 3-0 up it's nice to see the team maintain possession with such ease. If you're aiming for 'death by football,' this is going to progress the players more than the odd extra goal.

I just think it's never a bad lesson for the lads to see the value of sensible game management and control, even if it is taken a bit far. It's an important part of the game, and as you say the first team could do it a lot better too.

It's not as if young players need to be coached in exuberance and aggression. Those things are natural in 17 year olds.

So this is aimed at those of you who are up to speed with what our Reserves are capable of etc.

IF it is the case that a reliable tackler/ tracker etc in DM would transform us at the back, do we have anyone in the ressies who does this? Is that where Rossiter plays?

Yep, and Chirivella.

Rossiter's pretty close I think, but even with him it might be a year early.

It'll be interesting to see if he or anyone else gets minutes tomorrow vs Boro.

[article]The Kirkby Academy was the scene of a thriller on Thursday evening as Liverpool U21s were narrowly defeated 4-3 by Manchester City after a match filled to the brim with quality.

Despite battling back from a two-goal deficit and later launching a second comeback attempt, Michael Beale's charges were ultimately condemned to a maiden loss of the campaign.

The hosts had actually started the brighter and when a surging dribble by Ryan Kent brought the reward of a corner, Kevin Stewart was left unmarked from the subsequent delivery - but the defender directed his header too close to the goalkeeper.

Adam Phillips, making his debut appearance at this level, craftily released Sheyi Ojo with seven minutes on the clock, only for the young forward to follow Stewart in making life comfortable for the opposition stopper.

And the misses proved costly. Within a minute, City were in front courtesy of Thierry Ambrose, who capitalised on productive work by Brandon Barker along the left flank to tap home a simple finish at the back post with Danny Ward out of position.

It was 2-0 seconds later, as Sinan Bytyqi waltzed through the home defence and coolly planted a finish beyond Ward, doubling the visitors' advantage in the blink of an eye and leaving the previously unbeaten Liverpool with work to do.

Samed Yesil perhaps should have halved the deficit when he circled the 'keeper from another fine Phillips assist, but struck into the side-netting. At the other end, Ward had to be alert to thwart Olivier Ntcham before the break.

From the resumption, the young Reds wasted no time in mounting a fightback. Phillips had already hit the crossbar from distance before smashing home a finish from Joe Maguire's accurate cross on 48 minutes to reduce the arrears with his first U21s strike.

The same connection bore fruit moments later, creating Liverpool's and the 16-year-old's second of the evening. Again it was a delivery by the full-back and once more Phillips was composed to drive into the back of the net.

But back came the travellers - Mathias Bossaerts was grateful for Ashley Smith-Brown's cross to head past Ward, before an unstoppable turn and shot by Jordy Hiwula restored a healthy cushion for City.

With Yesil a constant menace to Patrick Vieira's team, there was still plenty to play for, particularly when the German striker found substitute Harry Wilson in behind and the Welshman notched with four minutes left to play to set up a grandstand finale.

Liverpool almost snatched an incredible draw too, but Ojo's thunderous blast from distance - which seemed destined for the corner - was stopped in expert fashion by Ian Lawlor to preserve the win for the away side.

Liverpool team: Ward, Randall (Wilson), Maguire, Stewart, Jones, Phillips (Cleary), Ojo, Lussey (Chirivella), Yesil, Brannagan, Kent. Unused substitutes: Fulton, Trickett-Smith.[/article]

Adam Phillips. 16 years old. Anyone seen him? I know he went on the pre-season tour. Is he a bit ace?

Phillips is an elegant CM, very good passer, although not the quickest. He's clearly another one to watch given how much the management seem to rate him. He reminds me a bit of Redknapp, albeit a better goalscorer.

The u18s beat Newcastle 5-1 on Saturday, Canos, Wilson (2), Marsh, and Sinclair getting the goals. The u16s beat them 11-2!! All I know there is that Yan Dhanda scored a hat-trick.

Both those teams clearly contain players who are just too good for those levels. Hopefully in the new year we can find loans for the likes of Yesil, Dunn, and Lussey, and maybe even Rossiter, to free up space for several players to make a step up.

They seem to manage to include extraordinarily little of the flavour of these games into more than 10 minutes of footage, as per usual. I've read a few times how brilliant Wilson was when he came on, for example, yet apart from his goal he was barely seen in these highlights.

Do LFCTV really have so much brilliant content to squeeze onto their schedule that they can't show a proper reflection of these matches??

Anyone has links to streams for the U19s away game versus Basel U19s? Usual places I go to aren't listing any streams for this game.

Can´t find any streams, but from Soccerway, this is apparently the team:

1 R. Fulton
4 D. Cleary
2 J. Maguire
10 A. O'Hanlon
5 T. Brewitt
3 S. Hart
7 O. Ojo
6 J. Rossiter
8 C. Brannagan
11 R. Kent
9 J. Sinclair
Coach: N. Critchley

Subs: A. Firth, Sergi Canós, H. Wilson, A. Phillips, Pedro, C. Whelan, W. Marsh

Goal. Basel are level as Ajeti heads home from Fischer's free-kick from the right. 2-2 with three minutes left to play...

Goal. Basel take the lead as Itten nets his second of the game with a finish across Fulton. 3-2 to the hosts now

Bugger

Sounds like a damn entertaining game, shame we can't sodding watch it.

What's the point of lfctv having a channel if they're not gonna show shit like this that isn't screened anywhere?!

Rossiter looking good . Great cross by Brannagan but Wilson just put it wide. We're on top right now, and not giving Real much time to get comfortable on the ball.

Hit the post now, and 1 - 0! Scrappy goal but credit to Sinclair for staying in the mix and being a nuisance, keeping the ball alive so Brannagan could run in and stroke it home.

Damn, should've been 3! Wilson capitalizes on a bad pass and tries to curl around the keeper in a one-on-one but keeper saves. Then Sinclair's follow-up is cleared off the line.

And Wilson gets another one-on-one as I type but their keeper is out early to clear. We're pressing high and hard, giving them no time to breathe on the ball. The Real Madrid staff can't be happy with how jittery their guys look.

Real Madrid gets a penalty, and the kicker does a John Terry. Slips and sends the ball wide and high. They've started to come into the game in the last 5 to 10 minutes or so, when we sat a bit too deep and had problems getting the ball out.

Exciting game. Corner for them gets headed into the far corner but we clear just off the line. Follow up gets hammered against the bar with Fulton beaten. Escaped there. Real Madrid definitely have the upper hand now in this game but they're still careless at the back and we definitely look capable of catching them on the counter with a bit of luck.
