Newcastle United have inquired about the availability of Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva. (Northern Echo)

Benitez is keen to sign a couple of midfielders this summer, and has identified Lucas a viable option in a deep-lying role. (Northern Echo)

With one year of his current contract remaining, Lucas is likely to command a fee of around £4m. (Northern Echo)

I've been let down every single transfer window, but I still can't help getting my hopes up every time Lucas is linked with leaving.

It's been a totally embarrassing and depressing few weeks of transfer misery, watching the likes of United and City snap up talent and be linked with top players, so hopefully this can be a little bit of joy to the summer.

Benitez: Hello Liverpool, I'm just ringing to see if Lucas is ava......
Liverpool: Yes, he's available. In terms of availability, he's right up there, at the top in fact. As for non-availability, that's not a factor, coz he's available. Anyone remotely interested in his availability is going to be really excited, as he is in fact totally available. Hold on, I'll just get him LUCAS, PUT DOWN THOSE CHARCOAL BRIQUETTES, RAFA'S ON THE PHONE, HE'S LOOKING FOR A BOX-TO-BOX MIDFIELDER AGAIN (pssst, if he asks, you're totally available).

Why would we sell him for next to nothing when we barely had the squad to cope with no Europe last season.

Even if he just played in the domestic cups it would give the others a rest.
Selling him is all well and good but leaves only Can and Henderson who can do a job there and neither are DMs

We would have to but someone to replace him at huge costs.

Id rather we bought a DM and had Lucas as back up rather than buy 2

Agree, but he's looking for more regular playing time, I assume; I wouldnt begrudge him that

Lucas had his glamorous ten year anniversary event last season, followed by his end of season award and interview, so it would be a bit odd if he just turned up as usual next season. It seemed like a goodbye. I'm not sure Rafa is the right manager to work for at this stage in Lucas' career. He wants to play all the time, whereas Rafa is so ruthless he'll probably end up benching him as much as Klopp did. Brighton is probably a better bet.

I reckon if the choice is play every game at brighton or bit part at Liverpool he would stay.
Maybe he could work with Gerrard in the youth set up.

It would be nice to have some of our players stay and move into coaching.

You think Poulsen and Spearing are top class?
Can is the closest to a top class DM we've bought since Mascherano left.

On the contrary, mark's saying the opposite, namely that we've hung on to Lucas pending the signing of a top class DM but haven't (yet) actually managed to find one.

Yes, the academy kids could learn a lot from him.

Lectures with Lucas, year one:
  • best areas of the pitch to needlessly foul the opposition
  • how to consistently play at a set personal level
  • how to trick 5 managers into playing you despite being fucking shit
  • how to last 10 years at the club despite being fucking shit
  • how to get slammed down on the pitch by Nzonzi and become one of the most beautiful football gifs ever

* How to position themselves correctly when playing at DM.

Something every midfielder we've bought since Mascherano has failed to do.

We should call him "Hotel California".

Lucas checked out years ago - but the fucker will never leave.

Lucas could teach the kids how to give a free kick away on the edge of the area in the 5 minutes of the game. Never good enough, nice guy though

On a side note, looks like Rafa has won a 'fight'. Well, at least he lasted 5 yr out of his 8 yr contract extension he signed.
[article]Newcastle United’s chief scout Graham Carr has today parted company with the club by mutual consent.

Graham has been United’s chief scout for seven years, taking up the position towards the end of the 2009/10 season which saw the club gain promotion back to the Premier League under former manager Chris Hughton.

Graham was instrumental in identifying players from across the UK and Europe, including signings Yohan Cabaye, Matthieu Debuchy, Vurnon Anita, Moussa Sissoko, Papiss Cisse and Cheick Tiote.

Managing Director Lee Charnley said:

“It has been my pleasure to work with Graham over the last seven years as both a colleague and a friend. He can count some of Newcastle’s most successful players in recent years as his ‘finds’.

“Everyone connected with Newcastle United wishes Graham the very best for the future.”

The club is now reviewing its scouting operation and will make an announcement on any further changes in due course.[/article]

Hmmmmm. .... Carr did bring some good talent into that club. At least a fair few flashes in the pan that got sold on to greener pastures.

Indeed. Rafa was always going to want complete control over transfers but losing Carr may turn out to be a high price for them to pay.
