According to the Echo, Liverpool are on the verge of signing Alex Manninger on a one-year deal.
Alex is 39 now and only has 166 first team appearances over the course of his career. It's clear he is coming in as third choice with both Bogdan and Ward going out on loan, but with less games to play now Europe isn't a factor; is this signing really that necessary?
He is unlikely to ever get a game and while he may only be on a low wage (let's say somewhere around £20k a week for sake of argument), he may still end up costing Liverpool around £1m over the course of his one-year deal just to have him on the books.
I'm struggling to see the rationale behind this deal. Surely one of the academy keepers (Kelleher, George, Wheeler, Firth) would be capable of taking Manninger's 3rd keeper spot, or even a recall clause in Ward's contract (Klopp clearly isn't a fan of Bogdan) should keeper number 3 come into play?
