I said we wouldn't go top of the league again this season. aside from the fact I told you so, it's because I thought we were due a couple of games like this over our 'easy' run in til Christmas. when was the last time a top team threw away a lead like that? the last I can remember is arsenal throwing a four nil lead to Newcastle many many years ago. there's no spin you can put on what happened yesterday. we're not winning the league and we will have to push very hard to get in the top four imo. the issue with that is that I fully expect being in the champions league next year will spread us too thinly. oh well.
You were wrong though .... we went back on top just days after you said that !

[article]Cook, who also netted the equaliser with a well-taken swivel and shot, admits that his side had targeted Karius before the game after the former Mainz keeper had made a decidedly nervy start to his career in English football.

“We did [target him], we thought that he was under a lot of pressure,” the technically astute defender told Jim White on talkSPORT, broadcast at 10am on 5th December. “Obviously playing for Liverpool you’ve got to have a strong character.

“We did target him, we tried to pressurise him and get as many shots of possible. We did target him as a weakness in the Liverpool side.”[/article]

Never thought this would be the case even after moving on from Mignolet... ...

What a cunt to talk about a fellow professional on air like that. IMHO.

What fucking bollocks is that? Target the goalie? How the fuck do you target the goalie? By have nothing until 60 mins passed? So the game plan was to give Liverpool a 3-1 lead and then target their goalie..... Since your goalie is so extremelly good? Fucking idiot!

4 mins, 53 seconds - watch the 10 seconds that follow.

We have 10 fucking players in the box. 10. And Cook has time - 8 yards out in the centre of the goal - to control a ball with his foot that's chest high, bring it down, and half-volley into the net.

I wish I could Carragher-freeze-frame it at 4.57mins (if anyone can do that, please help a brother out). Every single one of our fuckers ball-watching. Not one of them in that 3-4 second space of time when the cross was coming in did any of them think to look for a man, get tight, or be in any way proactive.

There's no point having 10 in the box if they're going to ballwatch and run towards the goal.

Shit shit defending, that starts on the training ground.

Carragher on Monday night football making the exact point I made above about Cook's goal.

Am I just being really dumb here, or isn't "target the goalie" pretty much the whole point of football?

Unless your Milan Baron, in which case it's "target the corner flag"

[article]With the post-mortem well underway following Liverpool's capitulation at Bournemouth, where did it go wrong for Jurgen Klopp's men? Jamie Carragher offers his thoughts on a dramatic afternoon at the Vitality Stadium...

Having withstood a mini revival from the hosts to restore their two-goal lead at 3-1, Liverpool looked on course for a routine away victory on the south cost.

Just 14 minutes stood between the Merseysiders and a victory that would take them up to second in the Premier League, a point behind leaders Chelsea.

However, by the time the full-time whistle had sounded, the Reds were on the receiving end of one of the most thrilling comebacks in recent Premier League history as the hosts won 4-3.

In the video above, Carragher highlights Klopp's reluctance to make a tactical change to preserve victory and how panic quickly set in once the Bournemouth recovery had taken hold.

But who, or what, was to blame for Liverpool's defeat? Were defensive frailties key to the Merseysiders' demise or did an abject goalkeeping display contribute to their downfall?

Loris Karius' inconsistent start to life at Liverpool continued as he, at fault for two of the Cherries comeback goals, endured arguably his most uncomfortable afternoon in a Liverpool shirt.

For Carragher it was clear, the 23-year-old failed to come up with the answers when his team needed them most, an aspect of his game he has challenged the young stopper to improve.

"Liverpool have not got a poor defence, and they are not poor defensively," Carragher told Monday Night Football. "If you've got a poor defence, your goalkeeper gets worked a lot.

"The fact Karius has not made many saves tells me Liverpool have not got a poor defence because the 'keeper has not had to face anything, he has not had to do anything.

"The reason why we were critical of Karius after the Bournemouth game is because you cannot expect your defence to press constantly for 90 minutes, there will be games where people make mistakes.

"There have been two games where he has had questions asked of him; Swansea, where he struggled and was lucky, and Bournemouth, where he did not have the luck, the ball bounced out and he conceded.

"That is why we are critical because he was asked questions and he failed to answer them.

"Having said that, it's still early days for his Liverpool career, we are not saying he's finished by any stretch of the imagination. However, over the next 12 to 18 months he has got to improve."[/article]

So Carra also says we havent got a poor defence. Maybe this will shut up Manwholikestomoan. At least for a while.

Life as a pundit is such that you can say one thing one week and the Complete opposite the next week, and you don't have to answer to it. If you can create some controverse the media you work for will be over the moon.

Carragher changes his tune a fair bit, because he was ripping the defence apart when we lost to Burnley.

But then what does he know? Some people on here thought the midfield were too blame for the disgraceful collapse on Sunday, and that the back four were not culpable in any way.

Whatever, there's no way you can argue with the facts: we have the worst defence in the Top 8 of the league

Your might be right, but there are more defences out there struggling. But football is more than the four guys picked to play defence any given sunday. Good managers set up the teams to defend and attack as units. We collapsed sunday and it all started the day Klopp arrived With his demanding style of play. We will see it again every now and then. But since it is complex stuff Ill leave you to think Carragher knows everything and Klopp knows nothing and defending is all about those four guys and the goalie.

This will sound a bit daft, but imo the defence isn't exactly the issue.

Klopp doesn't seem to want a rock solid defence, he wants decent defenders who can play a bit too, & that's because he expects the midfield & even the attack to defend just as much.

When we've been playing so well recently, & even had a couple of clean sheets, it's been the entire side. That old cliché of 'defending from the front' seems to be exactly what Klopp expects.

At the weekend the midfield stopped the press & lost its shape, then all the pressure ended up on the defence.

Pre Matip

Not with Matip in the side

Yes, we certainly missed Matip

No question. Shows we need another CB and quick

He exudes calm, I am sure it rubs off on Lovren who was all over the place on Sunday - out of position and giving away stupid Lucasesque fouls. We look very solid defensively when he has played, and I would say Man City have a worse defence than us.
If we cannot unearth an under the radar gem like Matip in the window I hope we spend some big bucks on proven talent. The money must be there for a big buy and apart from a decent keeper it is the biggest priority at the club.

Hmm, I hope we do spend some money on the defence, yeah. There's been plenty of Van Diijk talk.

As for City, they have looked really poor defensively. That's been exacerbated by the playing style Guardiola wants, and Stones being indulged (perhaps not the right word, but you know what I mean), plus Bravo seems to not only take risks with his distribution and also not be actually that good at actual saving shots.

Changing shape and personnel regularly doesn't help. I would say their defence and keeper may well cost them dearly in the title race, but so will ours if it doesn't get sorted

If only - plenty of chat in the press that both Manchesters AND Chelsea fancy him, with our salary structure I would imagine we are going to be well down his priority list unfortunately

Strange then that Lucas is preferred to him even taking into consideration a desire to be able to play out from the back.

Plus, Klopp told us to expect big things from Klavan. I'm trying to find the article where Klopp stated that he was surprised how Klavan was initially viewed by the fans, (i.e. a back up player). He told us to just wait and watch him play and we'll be surprised.

Yup, had that same interview in mind when I asked the question.

Hi Everyone

It's been almost 3 days since we lost - and I am finding this defeat harder to take than any of our cup final defeats in recent history. It is really difficult this - and for those of you and in part me saying we should have played so and so - I just feel that our team should have been good enough against ANYTHING/ANYBODY that Bournemouth put out that day. It is really hurting this one, so fucking angry at our players.

MORON

Love the signature. Emphatic and endearing.

I agree. It was appalling, especially after our almost teutonic - excuse the stereotype - first half performance. I don't mind isolated errors but a collective act of stupidity really depresses me. I can cope with a mediocre team, for a while, but a good team full of idiots really angers me, because you can see how good they could be. Hope intrudes.

This seemed a terribly frail team that Klopp took over. I thought he'd deal with that before he improved the quality.

But as the finals showed last season, this is still a bunch that chokes in big games. I really doubt I'll ever see such a cowardly performance as against Palace a couple of years ago - that remains the most humiliating performance I've ever seen - but that game on Sunday gave pause for thought.

We need leaders at every part of the team, we need to get smarter players, and, in the short term, we need the manager to be ruthless in benching the really thick players.
