Footballer Ched Evans has been jailed for five years for raping a 19-year-old woman, while another player, Clayton McDonald, has been cleared.
Wales and Sheffield United striker Evans, 23, was convicted by a jury at Caernarfon Crown Court.
Both he and Port Vale defender McDonald, also 23, had denied rape at a Premier Inn near Rhyl, Denbighshire.
The men admitted having sex with the woman on 30 May, 2011 but said it was consensual.
During the trial, the jury saw video interviews in which the woman, now 20, said she could not remember what happened and feared her drinks were spiked.
She could not remember travelling to the hotel, but woke up in a double bed.
"My clothes were scattered around on the floor," she said.
"I just didn't know how I got there, if I had gone there with anyone. I was confused and dazed."
The court heard that Evans, whose mother lives in Rhyl, had invited McDonald and others for a bank holiday night out in the seaside town on 29 May.
Because there was not enough space at Evans' mother's house, he booked McDonald into the hotel.

Defender Clayton McDonald signed for Port Vale last season
The court heard that McDonald met the woman and took her back to the hotel room, sending a text to Evans stating he had "got a bird".
During Evans' evidence, he told the jury he had gone to the hotel, let himself into McDonald's room and watched his friend and the woman having sex.
It was claimed McDonald asked if his friend could "get involved", to which the woman said yes.
The prosecution claimed that while the attack happened, Jack Higgins, an "associate" of the footballers, and Ryan Roberts, Mr Evans' brother, watched through a window.
The court heard the defendants had known each other since they were 10 years old and shared digs when they played for Manchester City's youth academy.

Ched Evans, you have been found guilty of not being famous enough to treat in an exceptional way. I have no choice, therefore, but to send you down for not waiting to commit this heinous time until you were signed to a premiership club. We can only hope that this teaches all of your peers a very important lesson.

If Evans was guilty how comes this McDonald isn't? All I got from this article was that she doesn't remember how to get there, and that McDonald pulled, and then invited his friend to join in. How is it possible from that that Evans is the only guilty party?

i gather there is alot more to this story than what's in the media reports because obviously there's a huge amount that doesn't make sense .

Anyway is this the usual arrogant footballer stuff or a more common part of society today ? I mean who the fuck is happy to take sloppy seconds on a passed out bird your mate just had ? And while this is going on you're happy for your brother and mate to be outside the window recording it on their phones ! And who the fuck would be up for standing outside a shite premier inn window watching your brother or mate ride some passed out bird ? . fuckwits

I don't get why you can't bang a bird who says yeah just coz she's off her mash. That's not your fault. Maybe she's off her mash and wants fucking. It's not like I can wake up the day after I've battered someone and say 'I didn't really want to do that, it was because I was drunk', I'd get done anyways - so why am I responsible for my drunken actions and some skank isn't?

If I'd been bummed and couldn't remember it, I'd take it as a sign I needed to cut down on the booze for a few weeks.

I can think of better things to joke about than the rape of a 19 year old lass.

Surely what the other fella did was worse? Am I missing something? He instigated the whole thing & did at least the same as Evans. How did he get off with it?

I'd say that the mates filmed Ched at it (hence there is proper evidence she was dead to the world), whilst in the case of your man, there is no evidence this was the case.

Yep, reading between the lines that makes sense. Also, regardless whether she was too drunk once she got there to give consent, the fact she agreed to go to the hotel with him helps his case.

Though I doubt being totally comatose from drink could be taken as implied consent.

CCTV footage played to the jury showed McDonald being approached by the complainant and getting into a taxi which she flagged down.
He then took the woman, whom he and Evans had earlier seen fall over in a kebab shop, to a Premier Inn hotel room that Evans had booked in McDonald's name.
During the drive to the hotel, McDonald called someone on his phone to say he was with a girl.
The complainant had been drinking wine, double vodkas with lemonade and had also had a sambuca shot.
In an interview with the police, she said she believed her drink was spiked that night because she was used to drinking heavily and had never 'blacked out' before.
The court heard that McDonald and the woman walked into the hotel 'linking arms" and went to his room.

That's probably why McDonald was found not guilty

I've still not read anything in these articles that suggests Evans has done anything wrong. He ask his mate if he could join in on a threesome, he asked her, they both said yes? Whats wrong with that, don't give me she was too drunk, if shes able to reply, shes able to consent, especially as she's been see walking into the hotel happily with the other guy. It perplexes me how two guys can be involved in the same sex act yet only one of them is a rapist. I'm sure the articles are missing out loads of detail here, but purely on these articles it sounds like a girl has drunk too much and gone a little wild, woke up the next day feeling rather embarrassed and trying to blame everyone but herself, she says her drinks must have been spiked, yet from all these articles no where does it say they found any proof of this?

From a purely football related matter.........the strange thing about this is that Evans has been a highly rated youngster for a few seasons, he has always looked decent but his goal-return has been poor. Since the start of this season he has had this rape trial hanging over him and he has starting scoring prolifically. He is now deemed (or until yesterday anyway) one of the top lower league talents, with many Championship teams and a few Premier League teams sniffing around.

It will be interesting to see if he can get his career back on track after this. It will also be interesting to see how Sheffield United react over the next 2 games to the loss of their top goalscorer as they try and seal automatic promotion.

No, the video wasn't shown, it seems it wasn't very clear. The only video shown was of the girl on CCTV looking drunk. So how come it's ok for one dude to bang her and not the other? The judge said that she was incapable of consent - which is a load of bollocks - but even if that is grounds to convict, how can she be capable of consent with one but not the other?

Consent could be implied from her actions with McDonald, there's nothing to suggest she consented with Evans.

So how can you convict on that? If it's a given that she met someone in a chippy and a minute later is in a cab having given consent to fuck a man she just met - why would you accept her word that she couldn't remember giving consent a few minutes later with someone else? She's obviously a slag - so what changed in that short time?

You need two things:

1. Evidence that the sex happened
2. Her to say she didn't consent.

Evans obviously had nothing to rebut either of those, McDonald had something to rebut her saying she didn't consent with him (the extract from the article I showed earlier).

Presumably there's physical evidence of 1, or the case wouldn't have gone anywhere. Without seeing all the evidence it's hard to know the details, but it's worth noting 99% of rapes go unconvicted. You have to be a really shit rapist to get caught.

I know all that and I know that conviction rates are low - but I thought you were innocent until proven guilty. He's been found guilty because of not being able to prove she consented - which is of course impossible. It all seems well weird.

He wasn't able to cast a reasonable doubt on it. And to be fair it does look well dodgy.

he arrives in for sloppy seconds
He left through a fire escape .. why ?

And he was a nob in the police interview - he told them he could have any bird he wanted in the place because he was a rich footballer. No jury was going to have any sympathy for him.
