Chelsea - pre match thread

In a question and answer session with kids who are given a chance to play football in coaching sessions with the LFC foundation, Sturridge, when asked if he would play against Chelsea said: "Hopefully this weekend I'll be back."

And when one of the young footballers wondered if he would be selected by boss Brendan Rodgers, he added: "I'm not too sure if he'll play me or not. We'll have to see."

Sturridge was in a good form at the launch event - which confirmed Liverpool's multi-million pound sponsorship deal with Subway, as the giant American firm extends its reach into the Premier League - bantering with the kids and explaining how he dreamed up his unique celebration dance.

He was also asked whether he would celebrate if he scored against his former club Chelsea...and he admitted that would cause him a few problems.
"I would like to show respect to my former club, but if I were to come on and score in the last minute I'm going to be on a mad one, aren't I?" he laughed. "I don't want to - but I don't know if I could control myself if that happened."

@ViktorFagerLFC: Telegraph - Abramovich has given his blessing to Jose Mourinho’s controversial plan to rest an entire XI vs Liverpool FC.

@Moley_LFCDT: CFC Team to face #LFC via the Mirror: Hilario; Kalas, Mikel, Christensen, Ake; Van Ginkel, Matic, Lampard; Salah, Ba, Schurrle #AsIf

Mourinhos mind games working a treat in the media.
Is he arrogant enough to go through with it?

That team would beat us.

The Guardian seem to think he'll play a weakened but still decent side. Cahill and Ivanovic in central defence to prepare them to play together in the CL, and most of the other first XI rested. Something like

Schwarzer
Kalas
Cahill
Ivanovic
Cole
Mikel
Matic
Lampard
Salah
Schurrle
Ba

Check out how many players they have out on loan.
They fucking dwarf our academy and reserves.

30 players out on loan, 30!
Some of them could become top class players.

They could, but it's nothing they couldn't afford to buy anyway. They do that basically with the idea of selling them on, to produce more income for FFP purposes.

Whereas even an inferior but still productive academy is much more valuable to us, because we have a genuine need for good youth players to bolster the squad.

That could be true but still, the difference in quality between our fringe players and theirs is borderline astronomical.
Granted they haven't produced any top quality players since John Terry and they don't seem to be in the business of producing players either. Disregarding Courtois and Lukaku, players like Piazon, Zouma and Chalobah are destined for premiership football.
Then there's little Hazard, Bamford and Van Anholt who could become decent players as well.

I'm sure they will. I'm sure they'll produce more good players than we do. The point is that it doesn't meaninfully add to their resources because they could afford to buy players like that if they didn't produce them. The difference an excellent academy makes to Chelsea is FFP compliance. The difference a good academy makes to us is squad strength sufficient to allow us to compete with the likes of Chelsea and City.

You've got a point.

He's just getting his excuses in early.

If they do get a Result from us, he'll be hailed as some master tactician. If they lose, its because they were saving themselves for Madrid. He can't lose now either way so his team can play with zero pressure.

The reality is they'll have a decent XI which could beat most teams and their bench will be full of kids.

Great news (bar the obvious) about a weakened XI from Chelsea would be a level of inexperience with the sheer noise and passion that is going to face them from the crowd. Unfortunately the team posted by Peter still has a level of leadership from the likes of Fwank and Cole but would be great to face that line up.

Thanks for posting those vids Modo. Nice one.
Just on an interesting side note, there were one or two nice bits of play from Djimi - yes, Djimi - that night in 2005 which I don't remember noticing at the time, and he did his bit in Istanbul too.

Weakened side, bollocks. What a fucking pathetic transparent cunt Maureen is. He's a proper shithouse. Takes the credit when things go well, shifts the blame when things go badly. If he was in a war he'd be shot by his own troops.
