Has anyone written him off? I've always been a fan of his and think he'll be a fine CB, but I also know he's made some bad errors and I can see why some have hammered him for them. But I don't think they've completely written him off, just questioned why he's playing so often in that position. My take is that there haven't been many excellent defenders who haven't gone through that stage but the successful ones are the ones who were persevered with. Gomez is a bright lad who will soon rectify these errors. He certainly needs to, of course, but I've not lost any faith in him.
 
Re Gomez, some of this ball-watching criticism is unfair, most defenders are guilty of it. He's a good player, learning his trade. I'd keep him before Lovren every day of the week. It's easy to be a Hansen-like analyst but there aren't many Hansen-like defenders around, Pique, Ramos and Ferdinand spring to mind as potential victims of this criticism.

And certainly even Hansen wasn't a Hansen-like analyst when he first came into the team. He made some real howlers in his first couple of seasons.

Meh. I'm wrong all the time. He'll probably be the new Hyppia.

I just think running under a ball and shit like that, and waiting for the ball to come to you for a header in the box is so basic, I mean SO SO primary school basic that he's just never going to cut that shit out. Like a Titus bramble. Solid and reliable for 89 minutes but with a really fucking dumb error in the other.

He's young. He might be brilliant one day. But I really doubt it

Yeah, I share the exact same thoughts on him. Hopefully completely wrong, obviously.
 
Gomez has all the attributes needed to be a successful player. He's athletic and powerful for a start. He has shown triumph over adversity by over coming a horrible injury that kept him on the sidelines for an entire season. This show he has an appetite for hard work, his dedication and commitment can't be faulted. However, he has let himself down with glaring mistakes this season. I can count 4 or 5 off the top of my head. At the moment we can just about pawn these off as Joe being a bit wet behind the ears, but that excuse will only carry for so long. He needs to cut out his lapses in concentration. If you watch back on some of the he has been at fault for, you will notice that he usually has no idea where the attacker is. His defensive instincts aren't telling him to look over his shoulder or to be more aware to his surroundings.

If these mistakes continue to happen then both Gomez and the coaching staff need to share the blame. Gomez needs to work on some defensive drills (probably even without the ball) so that he can improve his positional sense because at the moment he is being caught flat footed, in no mans land, oblivious to where the attacker it. Then he has this other problem when his brain seems to CTRL ALT and DEL all by itself and shut down. He's becomes a liability for about 15 mins. This 'spell' oddly often comes after him having an impressive first half. The Gomez Blip is what I'll call it.

I hope he works on his defensive game or the staff work with him because he seems to have a lot going for him.
 
He's costing us goals. You can't afford players who cost you goals. With Mignolet, Lovren, Karius etc it's clear they need to be replaced with better players. Gomez is young so probably doesn't deserve to be in that category. But what he should be is out on loan in the championship or lower premiership learning his trade.
Not in red costing us points every other week.

He's learning in public. And you will get mistakes. I think the annoying thing is we are vying for top 4 and hopefully Europe. Joe Gomez right now will cost us things like that and that's not fair on the kid.
To be fair tho that's an indictment of our management and recruitment of defenders for the last 5 years rather than an indictment of Gomez, TAA etc.
 
In an ideal world Clyne wouldn't be mysteriously in hiding and he'd be playing RB. Gomez would be coming into the team or out on loan. Gomez and TAA have been rotating on and off but I do agree Gomez at the moment is making too many mistakes. I suppose Klopp doesn't want to buy a RB as we have Clyne, Gomez and TAA but the later two guys are lacking in experience and it shows. If we had a sound keeper and a solid defense it would help. They might be able to carry Gomez through difficult spells. Instead he is thrown into the back of the clown car with Bozo, Krusty and the boys.

Yeah but we all learned recently that “he’s a rubbish, useless spastic” just means “he didn’t score enough goals” if you wait long enough.
 
I think it's fair to compare Gomez and Carra. He needs time.
Also think it's a bit unfair to judge a member's comment right after a certain player has made a mistake. The word cunt is thrown around a lot in this forum when we're not doing too good.
 
What also doesn't help defenders (and GKs too, tbf) these days is the fact that every mistake now comes with 5 extra camera angles and super super Ultra HD 2000k slow mo. I fucking rate Gomez and I think the mistakes he is making are all at least 'new' mistakes, or unique mistake types. i.e. the one against Alexis who got a march in front of him - after that horror, i bet he'll never let that happen again cos it will have shocked him into being aware of that. Same for the Sane ball watching one.

He kept Sane at bay for most of the match and is developing at pace. I'd rather we nurtured him through this spell than decided we will only play him when he's 100% perfect. I feel like some fans have forgotten that errors have always been made in football - but maybe they just weren't as over analysed meaning it is forgotten that they are made.
