Next Alonso? Liverpool free to sign 'exceptional' Barcelona maestro as part of £70m MegaDeal

Thanks to Neymar, the speculation linking Coutinho with a move to Barcelona continues to intensify, and reports in Spain over the weekend claim that the Catalan giants are more determined than ever to sign Liverpool's main man this summer.

Last week, Neymar made yet another public plea for Coutinho to leave Liverpool, and Barcelona are so desperate to seal the deal that they're reportedly willing to include one of their top players in the deal. According to Spanish newspaper Don Balon:

"Coutinho is a priority for Barcelona, and they plan to include Ivan Rakitic as part of the deal in aid to lower the Coutinho's fee".

Prior to his move to Barcelona, Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Rakitic, and during the 2013-14 season, he hinted that he'd consider a move to Anfield. He told 24 Sata:

"I'm flattered to be linked with a big club like Liverpool, and it fills me with pride. Something is developing, but at the moment there is nothing concrete."

Jordan Henderson is a fan of Rakitic, and when asked last season about players he admires, he told enthused:

“Rakitic is one of the players I watch. He doesn’t get the praise given to Neymar, Messi or Suárez, but he’s so influential and does all the dirty work. He has qualities I can learn off"

The obvious irony here is that Hendo's place in the team (i.e. as the deep lying midfielder) will come under threat if Liverpool sign Rakitic, though knowing Klopp, he'll probably play the Croatian out of position as a number-10, or a right winger.

Obviously, Rakitic is not a like-for-like replacement for Coutinho, but he will undoubtedly strengthen Liverpool's midfield options. Is he a Klopp-type player, though? I doubt it. Whenever I see Rakitic play, he doesn't run around like a headless chicken trying to rack up his regulation 12 miles a game, so Klopp probably won't be interested.
Please don't quote Kuntwar. His incoherent clickbait articles hold no substance.

29 though isn't he? Doesn't upset me unduly but he isn't a typical sounding target.

The major problem with signing 29 year olds is, if you're not careful, they'll be 31 or 32 in 2 or 3 years time.

But when you sign a 29 year old, at the time you sign them, they're 29.

There's no fucking point worrying how old they might be in two years time.

I think he will off this summer. He is playing well for brazil now and his profile has been raised.

All I'm bothered about is his form for Liverpool in the closing stages of the season so hopefully his trip to South America will re-ignite him now, because he's been gash for weeks.

We can return to this thread in the close season.

I'm starting to doubt if our system suits Coutinho. He's been close to awful for a while.
However, when he plays Brazil he's almost a totally different player.
Is the amount of running and defending too much for him?
Coutinho's game is all about finesse imo. Would suit Barca perfectly.
I'd consider selling, depending on the fee and who's available.

Or the player puts himself in the shop window by playing well for brazil. For Liverpool he doesn’t need to do so, now he has his big contract.

It's Neymar I'm telling you, buy Neymar and he'd improve Coutinho. Win win win.

Kanwar? The serial "I'll take a contrary stance" to any Liverpoll fan?

He's about as credible as a UKIP candidate? I'd suggest some simple research on him will show him to be all about the hits for his site. Plus he only likes debate if it agrees with him, so he actually doesn't like debate.

Bid to be expected this summer then?

Luis Suarez, Neymar and Messi are pushing Barcelona to sign Liverpool star Philippe Coutinho next season. (Don Balon)

Yeah, I might be in the minority but if they want to break our transfer record, they can have him reluctantly. i.e. £75-80m minimum. Perhaps a bit more since the Pound has since fallen versus the Euro. Ha!

He scored that Brazil Goal with his left peg too.. His weaker foot...

I thought he could only ever shoot with his right..

I mean , hes never worth anything like £70m but barca are cunts so id hope for a stronger position than we took when valuating suarez for those fucks

Exactly.. Its not like Coutinho is going around biting people or getting suspended for allegedly racially abusing players.

£100m minimum please.

I'd totes rather not sell our best players so we can all enjoy it when Coutinho merks Mascherano, Suarez and Iniesta in one swift turn and nutmegs Marco van Basten before winning us number 6

He's starting to push his shots more frequently towards the far post instead of pulling them to the near post (which works better in futsal). This will allow him to score more frequently than before.
I think that the next year will see a maturity in his performances and he will become a truly world class AM. If there is any possible way to hold on to this kid (if his head hasn't already been turned by them tapping up cunts) we should do it. Time to start thinking like a club that wants to win the fucking league, stay permanently in the top echelons of the competition, and compete very strongly in Europe too.

Maybe I'm naive but his new contract starts in July right? So he's currently on his old wages still? So why would he sign that unless he wanted to stay? I'd understand if the new contract had started already.

Don't sell him, we don't need the cash and you never get better if you sell your best players.

I dont think we'll sell him this summer and I dont think he wants to leave either. Barca can get to fuck this time.
