Cup talk - Spurs at home

Ings & Grujic will surely start after Klopp's comments and not playing in the U23 match. Maybe Gomez will make the bench if his fitness has progressed sufficiently to maybe get a late runout if possible. I'd want to rest Mane and keep him as fresh as possible (and not risk injury) so a bench slot for me.

----------------------Mignolet

A-A------------Matip--------Klavan-------Moreno

------------------------Stewart

-----------Wijnaldum -------- Grujic

------Ings ---------- Sturridge -------- Origi

A front three of Firmino, Ings and Sturridge would be nice. Or maybe Origi instead of Firmino.

I can't see all three starting, I think he wants some creativity amongst the mix. He might start Origi on the right instead of Mane, due to his reasonably good pace, so it's a bit more of a like for like, in that sense. Strurridge will get the middle slot and then I guess it's Coutinho or Firmino for the other attacking birth.

Stewart should start, as Macca said. It's Spurs.

There's no way he leaves out Ings or Grujic after specifically saying how unfair it was he couldn't squeeze them into the match day squad on Saturday because of how well they were training.

That said you may be right about creativity. That means it surely must be Sturridge, Ings & either Firmino or Coutinho as the front three.

We don't have a creative outlet on the bench. One of Coutinho, Mané, Lallana or Firmino has to start.

I really don't see how a team of back ups, reserves and subs will win against Spurs.

---------------------------Mignolet
A-A--------Lucas---------------------Klavan-----------Moreno

---------------------------Stewart

----Can/Wijnaldum------------------Grujic

Origi-----------------Sturridge-------------------Ings

Where's our creative outlet?

Team they started with against Gillingham:

-----------------------Vorm
Trippier Carter-Vickers Wimmer Davies
--------------------Winks Carroll
-------------Lamela Eriksen Onomah
-----------------------Janssen

Like I said, we should have a mix of reserves and certain starters.

Watching the press conference.
Klopp confirms that Mignolet will start.

I thought he didn't have a number one?

As for Mignolet, I thought he was always going to start the cup games? Or did I make that up?
Didn't he say the opposite, that they were both our number one? Same difference, but allows him to claim that.

I'm a big fans of Ings but have resigned myself to the fact he doesn't fit into Klopp's long term plan. I'd love to see him start against Spurs but only if it's as the focal point of our attack and not used as an auxiliary striker playing off Sturridge/Origi etc. Ings is IMO not adaptable, he is a ridiculously hard working goalscorer so to play him wide or as a No.10 makes no sense.

Pochettino has more or less said that is the team he'll play again.

I'd like to see Ings, Grujic and Origi get a start. Fuck Sturridge tbh, I'd rather see Ings.

Reports this evening that Trent Alexander Arnold, Ovie Ejaria, Kevin Stewart, Marko Grujic and Danny Ings will start tomorrow.

"In contention to start" is not the same as starting. I think Trent A-A. and Grujic will start for sure, the rest will depend on Klopp's tactics. We have 3 strikers who desperately need minutes in Sturridge, Origi and Ings, but can they all play together? He will definitely want to put out a cohesive team that can beat Spurs and progress in the cup.

I like this part:
It is at right back, the position in which he has excelled for the under-23s, that Alexander-Arnold will be given his first team debut whether it comes on Tuesday night or at a later date. The feeling within Anfield is that the 18-year-old has developed sufficiently to be regarded as a deputy to Nathaniel Clyne with his emergence reducing the need for Klopp to turn to the transfer market in order to strengthen the full back positions.

Still remember the 2004 league cup where Rafa fielded this team:

Dudek, Henchoz, Whitbread, Warnock, Potter, Diao (Partridge 111), Nunez (Smyth 70), Biscan,Raven, Mellor (Welsh 52) , Sinama-Pongolle

vs Spurs:

Robinson, Pamarot, King (c) , Gardner, Atouba, Ziegler, Carrick, Brown, Ricketts (Defoe 66), Kanoute, Keane (Mendes 86)

at the lane and we knocked them out on penalties. Loved that game.

That was a beauty.

So, I'm guessing:

Ming
Arnold Lovren Klavan Moreno
Wijnaldum Lucas Gruijc
Ejaria Studge Ings

Why have you got Ejaria as a forward ? Not a chance he will start Lucas, Grujic, Wijnaldum and Ejaria - pick three from those for your midfield.

EDIT. Actually you could squeeze them in if you played a front three of Ings - Studge - Wijnaldum, since he's played there and has performed well there too (not for us). However I still think Wijnadum will be in midfield, with maybe Lucas on the bench (for Stewart starting behind Wij) and Origi and Ings will both deffo start.
