Cup talk - Spurs at home

It's a slightly odd situation we have now, in that we have a number of players here, who are arguably on the fringes of the first team but too good for the reserves.

I'm essence we currently have 13 or 14 players who genuinely deserve & need to play this cup game.

Our squad looks short in depth when players are out (cf Lallana & Wijnaldum recently), players stepping up & proving their worth in the likes of tonight's game could help solve that issue & give themselves a real shot at getting time on the pitch in some Premier League matches.

Should Stewart play tonight & boss it for ninety minutes for example then if both Can & Wijnaldum are unavailable or not up to scratch again he could deputise.

The creativity bit is the issue up front. I don't see anyone there I immediately think of who can step up for Firmino, Lallana, or Coutinho. I suppose Grujic & his more direct box to box style could come in provide a different outlet.

To be honest I'm not so sure we are short in depth, it's just that those players don't get a real chance to prove their worth because the top 14/15 1st team players are more or less fixtures.

We do have strength in depth to cover most areas, as in perform well even if not to the same level as those they are replacing : Mignolet, AA, Randall, Klavan, Sakho, Gomez, Grujic, Ejaria, Stewart, Brannagan, Lucas, Origi, Ings, Ojo .... some very good players in that lot.

This game is a lower priority for Spurs than us, because they're playing in the Champion's League, so both teams will field some lesser-known names and young players.

Seems like Klopp really REALLY wants to win it, though. Which is a good attitude, regardless of where it sits on your priority list.

I posted the likely Spurs team above - the one which Pochettino himself hinted would start. It's still a good team.

Its a decent team and they will still play like a Pochettino team.
They've also got some injuries and banned players.

I'm a big fans of Ings but have resigned myself to the fact he doesn't fit into Klopp's long term plan. I'd love to see him start against Spurs but only if it's as the focal point of our attack and not used as an auxiliary striker playing off Sturridge/Origi etc. Ings is IMO not adaptable, he is a ridiculously hard working goalscorer so to play him wide or as a No.10 makes no sense.

..........................................Ming.....................................
AA.................Klavan...............Matip.....................Moreno
............................Wijnaldum...........Stewart......................
.............Mane.................Grujic.................Coutinho..................

Pesam - Do you think Ings can play up top in the way Firmino does with less fancy footwork?

He makes similar runs and has good vision for teammates running off him.

Really think we might see two departures in January, Ings and Sakho.

I think Sturridge more likely than Ings. Even though not playing, we will get ridiculous fee for him - especially in a January window.

He just does not fit in our approach.

Selling Sturridge in January before Ings is like saying that Ings is better.
Nah we can't just start selling our subs. Sakho and Ings however are back up players and it wouldn't hurt us at all to sell them.

I'm really looking forward to this. Soz for the obvious question but is it on the TV?

Cheers. Assume sportsbars or pubs in Amsterdam will show it ? It is crowded by Englishmen here anyway!!
Yeah. It'll be on. If you are near Leidseplein the sports bar there (the one with the all-you-can-eat spare ribs) will have everything on and the beer isn't that expensive for Leidseplein. On the other side of the square is Dan Murphy's which is owned by a Liverpool fan and it should be on there but they don't have particularly big screens.

Have fun in Amsterdam!

Ings and Firmino have the same work ethic, Firmino is considerably more skillful and Ings is considerably more prolific in front of goal - so in answer - I think they could be interchangeable.

I'm a huge fan of Ings but have never said he's definitely good enough to be a regular starter. I said I thought he was worth a punt (when he was available for £1m at Bournemouth) and then repeated this when he was available on a Bosman (from Burnley). I have a hunch he IS good enough to be considered a regular for the first team but I'd just like to see him given a chance.
