Clearly he was anticipating the challenge, and took his feet off the ground in order to protect himself. Had he stayed with his foot planted in the ground and the challenge came, it could have been very nasty and even a potential leg breaker.

Exactly. He's had knee issues before, so I can completely understand his erring on the side of caution. If he hadn't have dived, his body position would have been different, causing the Watford player to behave differently, taking out if whole knee in the process. Penalty all day long
