Enter Shaqiri (Done Deal!)

I would actually be quite pleased if we did sign him, he is technically a very good player and would be a good squad addition.

Is he a world beater? No.

Does he have the ability to be a very good player? Yes.

If the Ox can kick on and improve I see no reason why Shaquiri can't... a cheap gamble.... why not...

Very strange team Stoke, they managed to sign some technically gifted players, wasn't Arnautovic there before joining the Hammers?

Some compare him to Ox, but there is a huge difference – Ox was one of the few true fighters in a fragile Arsenal team, he clearly has a team player mentality and was frustrated that many of his his former teammates were getting away with strolling through games. Shaqiri is is all about himself; he's already 26 and won't change. Notice the pattern: Bayern chose to sell rather than loan him out, despite the obvious talent and potential of a bigger return on investment, then Inter happily sold him after only 6 months. Stoke, who had relied on him to be the leader and the star, just got relegated meekly without a fight. For which he feels no remorse and responsibility, obviously, and immediately declares that he is leaving because he can "only play for an EPL team."

Here's another tidbit from Wikipedia:
Following Switzerland's first game at Euro 2016, Shaqiri declared he would switch allegiance to Kosovo if their manager would make him captain, in reaction to Swiss manager Vladimir Petković's decision to omit him from that position. Although already an international for the Swiss, FIFA rules would permit Shaqiri to represent Kosovo, who joined the federation earlier that year.

So his response to not being made captain is declaring that he would like to play for another country during the tournament. If that other country made him captain, of course... This guy is as toxic as Balotelli. There are way too many warning signs for me to consider this, even at cut price and as a bench option.

Rurik has spoken.. And confirms my suspisions.. Please put your findings to Herr Klopp. We don't need players who are all about them.

I can't remember which player it was (might have been Charlie Adam, edit - actually I think Charlie Adam was another the player tore lumps into), but he tore lumps into Shaqiri, saying its all about him. Constantly tries to shoot even or dribble past 8 players, so that he's on the highlight reel, when in reality he should be laying it off to a team mate. They suggested he was one of the biggest reasons they went down. (Along with others they bought, that were 'injured')

Klopp just said we were recruiting not just great footballers but good people, who would complement the togetherness of the group. Not sure this guy falls within that category. I really don’t get this one.

Its a smokescreen for someone else. Guarafuckingteed. ;)

I don't want him.. Quite a few stoke players claimed he was one of the ones not arsed in training and shirking it on the field. We don't need divisive characters.

Don't forget he was at Stoke. Decent players would struggle there to motivate themselves. He created plenty of chances last season.

He had it easy … a winger who's only job is to float a ball 3 yards above the defenders heads to perfectly find crouch's noggin.

In fairness he scored some crackers and scored in the last must win game before Palace turned it around

He was at Bayern.. Sold
He was at Inter.. Sold after SIX months

That should set alarm bells off.

If the little twerp has been conversing with Klopp and is prepared to sweat blood for the team and make the most of the talent he undoubtedly has, then there's no doubt he adds quality. I'd like to think that Klopp would talk him through his career trajectory and ask him if he has the character to turn it around.

I'm unsure. In one aspect, I don't think he is good enough and shows limited ambitions or future views. On the other hand I feel it is a relatively cheap squad addition who would be useful in the transition over the next 2-3 years as we look to get the likes of Wilson, Kent, Woodburn playing more regularly and PL ready. I wouldn't be hugely upset to see him coming on towards the end of a game we are trying to get a winner in as we know he has the ability to be a match winner - however if it means we then stop looking at someone better to compete more broadly with Mane and Salah then that would be a shame...

In short - i'm torn.

Perhaps this?

I was hoping that I could just search for whatever genius things I'd already said about him, and repeat that, but sadly all I can find is multiple references to him being a dwarf and in Time Bandits, and one post that said "he got bombed out of Bayern and Inter, nobody good wanted him, that's why he's at Stoke"

So.....that's it.

Shaqiri strikes me as one of those Asou-Ekotto type characters. Someone who views football just as a job, and not someone who actually enjoys it.

Despite his obvious talent, and some excellent opportunities, he's never made anything of it, and seems happy just collecting a cheque wherever he goes.

Cunt seems more interested in body building than playing football. His upper body is one of the most absurdly comical sights in football. If he lost weight, I have no doubt he'd be a far more effective footballer.

As far as Klopp goes, I suppose it's obvious. The primary targets in this window are Fekir and a keeper. Fabinho included, that'll take our spending to 150 million plus.

Klopp obviously wants another WF to compete with Mane and Salah, but the major talents like Dembele, Pulisic, and Bailey are just too expensive. The alternatives then are either to rely on someone from the Academy like Wilson, or go after a cheap experienced player like Shaqiri. Not the ideal position to be in, but it's better than relying on the paceless Lallana.

Yes. I don't know much about him at all, so I bow to the others about this, but after Klopp blasted Sakho out the club, I'd presume that he won't bring in a player with a worse reputation unless he's very sure he'll behave.

I've always thought that. He looks like he's escaped from Family Guy.

He thinks his 'massive muscles' mean he's more prone to injury? Well tone them down, then!

I'm still utterly confused by the thread title.

But lets say we are interested in him ... where does he fit in ?

Our system works best when we have real pace in our front three but Shaqiri doesn't have any.

Can he play through the middle ?

Shaqiri is fairly quick I think. Not Salah or Mane quick, but quicker than Lallana or Firmino.

I think the message we needed to take from the final was: 'It's the bench, stupid'. We need MUCH better options, as well as just more options, on the bench. So I'm pleased we're working on that. This guy doesn't sound like he's going to cope well with being 'cover,' but that's what we need. It's absolutely vital for us to protect the achievements our first XI produce.

Shaqiri or Wilson?
It basically means Wilson should move on.

I'd rather add 12 mill to the Oblak fee, and have Wilson/Woodburn as one of the deputies for Salah/Mane.
