Before we were linked with Pope, was he any good? Or just another slightly better than average goalkeeper?

I'm not sure he'd really played all that much, because he was number 2 to Tom Heaton and only got his chance due to injury this season.

So the mooted £18m price tag seems rather steep, even if he has been impressive enough to go to the World Cup as number 3 keeper.

I'm with the fine Doctor on this one. The stats from last season show that Pope was consistently saving more than expected - and largely second only to De Gea across the board. I think he'd be a good investment if we were looking for someone to fight with Karius for #1 (as Mignolet has lost that battle and is surplus to requirements) however I don't think he would be deemed a definite starter. I worry a bit about the lack of games he has played - even on his loans he was never a permanent feature of those teams.

One season of expected goals data isn't enough to reach a conclusion on him - unless you've watched him a lot and know he's for real.

I can't recall ever seeing him play, but if he's as good as the stats say how are two middling goalkeepers ahead of him in the England pecking order ?

A lot of the chances that would be regarded as the clear cut chances that he's better than everyone else at saving.

But many of them look like shit efforts on goal to me

Why is Ashley Young playing? I dont think his ability should be questioned regarding of who Southgate has decided to pick for the World Cup.

5 - Top goalkeepers based on 'Goals Prevented' from shots on target faced/xG conceded in the 2017-18 Premier League: 14 Goals Prevented - David De Gea 10 GP - Nick Pope 6 GP - Lukasz Fabianski 4 GP - Martin Dubravka 3 GP - Karl Darlow/Jack Butland

Pope is second in this list, has the most clean sheets of any English GK in the EPL, is 3rd best for saves made while also being the best from corners.

He's an interesting GK, and a helluva lot less risk at 18 mill £ then Alisson at 70 mill £, who also have had one great season.

Klopp has, and has always had, a massive blindspot with goalkeepers.

He needs to get it right and spend some money on that position for once.

Weidenfeller played 450 games or something, so he must have done something right.
But the GK situation now is screaming for an upgrade. We've been signing ace players all over the place lately, lets hope the recruitment team gets the GK transfer right as well. We need it badly.

Another one season one wonder?

That said Alllison has also played one (full) season in the top flight so pope seems like the cheaper alternative.

I want us to go and spend big on a keeper and solve our issues, I have a big worry we won't. A lot of the talk is Butland, I would much prefer Pope, one season it may be, he has been excellent.

My worry is he prefers to see it dribbling out the box rather than being put away safely ...could lead to accidents.

I have to agree, most of these saves were completely bang average and would be poor goalkeeping if they were let it. Add to that that I don't think he caught a single shot, and regularly spills the ball back into dangerous positions, he looks like a complete sidewards step from Karius to me, big pass.

I don't think appearances for England has or ever will be a good barometer of anything.

Having someone coming in and competing with Karius for the #1 spot is the worst of all solutions.

We need to buy someone who can come in and own it from day 1.

With his teeth.. He looks a little bitey.. No.. ??

Suarez esq maybe?

Take a chomp out of Lukaku when playing the Mancs..

I am game.. The entertainment on here would be fabulous..

The idea that we would buy someone just to "compete" with the Klown is depressing. We're being linked with about 8 different keepers at the moment.

Nobody catches shots anymore! Except Pope- if you look at my earlier compilation, he DOES catch shots. Also, he has the best high claims stats in the league! That's right, he doesn't punch every fucking thing that comes his way. He catches it. Novel idea, but I like it. Sorry Mystic, but you haven't got a scooby if you think he's on a par with Karius. Should I repeat a stat for you. Mistakes leading to a goal: ZERO

I was going purely on the video Rosco posted, nothing more, and in that video he looked very ordinary.
