[article]Steven Gerrard has got off to the best possible start as manager of Liverpool Under 18s, overseeing an emphatic 7-0 victory over Burton Albion.

In his first game in charge of the Reds' youngsters, Gerrard watched on as his side took apart Burton in ruthless fashion in a behind-closed-doors friendly at St George's Park.

The youngsters asserted themselves in front of their new manager, with Liam Millar and Rafael Camacho each striking a brace in the contest.

Adam Lewis converted from the penalty spot before further goals were added by Curtis Jones and Luis Longstaff to seal the win.

Gerrard was announced as Liverpool U18 boss in the summer following a return to his boyhood club and undertaking a UEFA 'A' licence.

After bringing his playing days to an end with LA Galaxy, Gerrard rejoined Liverpool and initially accepted an academy coaching role in November 2016.

Following a short time in the role Gerrard was then handed the vacant managerial position with the U18 set-up.

His side will now undertake a series of pre-season warm up clashes before Gerrard cuts his teeth as manager for an official league clash. [/article]

Yeah I saw this. Deffo a great start. I'm really looking forward to seeing how his managerial career pans out. Good luck to him.

What's been lacking at the younger levels is intensity, both in preparation and in games. He's already changed that. Whether he has the potential to develop as a manager obviously remains to be seen, but his presence and advice is just what the younger players need.

[article]Okera Simmonds scored twice as Liverpool U18s produced a superb performance to beat Rapid Vienna U19s 6-2 in Hungary on Saturday evening.

Steven Gerrard's side were full value for their victory as they scored some excellent goals, with Rafael Camacho, Curtis Jones, Patrik Raitanen and Glen McAuley also on the mark.

The young Reds went in front on 13 minutes when Simmonds netted from close range after a fine move.

Simmonds then made it 2-0 with a header from a corner before Rapid Vienna pulled a goal back.

Summer recruit Raitanen then got in on the act when the young Finn netted his first goal in a red shirt, again from a well worked corner.

Camacho then added another with a superb curled effort before Jones made it 5-2.

Ireland hot-shot McAuley then netted his first goal of pre-season with an excellent finish after superb approach play from Abdi Sharif.[/article]

[article]I'll stick with the real local ones. Looking at Curtis Jones' development at the U18s, developing under Stevie and Tom Culshaw will be really interesting to see.

Maybe Liam Coyle and Curtis with the U18s there, you've got two local lads and I think that will be quite exciting.[/article]

Was curious how he look like and this is what I found. :p

I reckon we'll be pleasantly surprised. He'll do well.

Reportedly close to signing 15 yr old Vitezslav Jaros from Slavia Prague Under 19s, had trials at Liverpool back in September.

When he was on trial with us:

Seems like the lad has officially signed for £300k.

Being banned from signing youth players from English league clubs seemingly not affecting our plans by much.

Dal Varesanovic - Bosnia
Edvard Tagseth - Norway
Patrik Raitanen - Finland
Jaros Vitezslav - Czech Republic

[article]Steven Gerrard praised Liverpool's youngsters after they clinched third place in a youth tournament in Switzerland.

Under-18s coach Gerrard and assistant Tom Culshaw led a 23-man squad that has taken part in the eight-team FC Aesch International Under-19 tournament near to Basel.

With the matches lasting half-an-hour each way, Liverpool drew 0-0 with Hamburg on Friday before beating Olympiakos 2-0 and securing a semi-final berth with a 1-1 draw against Basel.

The young Reds were then beaten 3-1 on Sunday morning by Fulham in the last four, but later clinched third place by beating Juventus by the same scoreline.

Liam Millar, Rafael Camacho and Yasser Larouci scored the goals that earned the Reds a bronze medal.

And Gerrard, speaking to liverpoolfc.com, said: “It’s a test physically and it’s a test mentally and we need to see what these lads are like when the pressure is on, when they are tired, and when they are asked to perform when they are out of their comfort zone.

“When you play at the highest level the most testing time is always in the last 30 minutes of games, and we ask the lads 'can you produce quality as a player when you are tired, when your body wants to give up and when you want to quit?'

“It’s tournaments like this that give you a flavour individually both mentally and physically.

“You learn an awful lot about them, not just as footballers on the ball, but what they are like off the ball, what they are like around hotels, how they cope when you ask them to play minutes when they are tired.

“They get asked a lot of questions over two days and the majority of them have done really well.”

Hamburg, Red Star Belgrade and FC Aesch were the other teams involved in the tournament, with Basel beating Fulham 2-1 in the final.[/article]

Gerrard's starting very well, but I think he needs to knock the punditry on the head and concentrate on the job in hand. He keeps being asked about what signings are 'crucial,' what our first team zonal defending system actually is, what our first team choices should be, etc etc. He's an employee of the club, he's got his duties, and responsibilities, he needs to shut up. He's not trying to cause trouble at all, but he's naive if he thinks these weekly pronouncements aren't problematic. The manager is his boss now, he has to step back and get on with his job.

Steven Gerrard has urged Liverpool to pull out all the stops to sign Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk before the close of transfer window.

The wantaway Dutch defender handed in a transfer request with an explosive statement earlier this month , but Saints chief Ralph Krueger insisted the south-coast club have no intention of selling Van Dijk this transfer window.

However, Gerrard feels the talented centre-back is essential for Jurgen Klopp to enjoy a successful season at Liverpool this term.

Gerrard told BT Sport: "Yes [he is a necessity].

"For me, if you want to compete in the league and in the Champions League ( Van Dijk is needed).

"It’s been well documented that we need two or three signings in."

[article]Liverpool are facing a battle to sign Fortuna Sittard prospect Perr Schuurs.

Schuurs recently had trials with Liverpool, where he impressed coaching staff.

However, the Reds face stiff competition for the 17 year-old defender, where PSV, Ajax and Borussia Dortmund are all in contact. Bayern Munich are also keen.

After trials at Liverpool, Schuurs' father, Lambert, told 1Limburg: "Liverpool informed us they were very satisfied about how Perr performed there. The club are preparing a report and will share that with Fortuna Sittard. So we'll wait for now.

"I have spoken with Steven Gerrard, who is now a youth coach. He is special to Perr. That was of course very good. But he remains very calm."[/article]
