Gerry Byrne: Former Liverpool and England defender dies
Former Liverpool and England defender Gerry Byrne, a member of the 1966 World Cup-winning squad, has died aged 77.
Liverpool announced the passing of their former left-back, who made 333 appearances for the club.
He played in the 1965 FA Cup final win over Leeds United when he broke his collarbone three minutes into the game and crossed for the Reds' first goal.
Byrne was also part of Liverpool's League Championship-winning sides in 1963-64 and 1965-66.
In 2009, Byrne and his fellow non-playing squad members from the 1966 World Cup were presented with winners' medals in a Downing Street ceremony, following a change in policy by world governing body Fifa.
Byrne made his Liverpool debut in September 1957 after coming through the club's ranks and his final Reds outing was in 1969.
"The Liverpool-born defender was a model of consistency at left-back under Bill Shankly and a testament to his popularity was evident as 40,000 supporters were at Anfield for his testimonial in April 1970," Liverpool said in a statement.

One of the earliest boyhood bluenoses to join the Reds and become part of LFC folklore, a contender for the LB spot in the All-Time XI and (as the 1965 Cup Final showed) a very hard man, said to have been the only player ever to have made Tommy Smith take a backward step when they had a confrontation in training one day.

Gerry Byrne RIP.

Gerry Byrne was an old-fashioned hard-tackling left back who was a tremendous asset in the 1960's side. He broke his collarbone in the 3rd minute of the 1965 Cup Final but continued to play the whole match including extra time. Substitutes had not been introduced at that time. RIP Gerry.

Cheers Gerry. Thanks for all you did for LFC.

A thread entitled 'Arsenal' gets 34 replies. A thread about a Liverpool legend's death gets 7. Yep, sounds about right.

I never saw him play but I was brought up hearing tales of his bravery. A proper embodiment of Shankly's values. RIP.

Slightly before my time as my earliest memories were from 70-71 season but my Dad and Granddad regularly discussed him every time Tommy Smith was mentioned as Liverpool's hard man..........."He's not as hard as Gerry Byrne" was a regular refrain. It took them a while to warm to Alec Lindsay (Byrne's replacement at left back) because they thought he wasn't nearly as good but they were happy to be proved wrong.....we were very lucky to have 2 such great left back's in succession. RIP Gerry.
