So we paid 25m for a player who generally only plays well at home. So should we go back to Newcastle and demand a partial refund of 12.5m?

Example:

Was contender for Man of the Match against the Premier League leaders Man Utd @ Anfield.

3 days later a missing persons notice was issued in Slovenia for him whilst most other LFC players were trying to fill their boots against Maribor.

For me I think Klopp needs to get him in the gym, if he could just bulk up a bit he would be far better at dominating, he gets brushed off the ball far too easily sometimes. Ultimately when Lallana returns and we get Keita (and Gorezta?) Gini will be seeing more of the bench unless he fixes up.

I'm obviously in a tiny minority, but I quite like him, and, while it's true that he only scores at home, IMHO it's unfair to claim he only plays well at home. He seems to have settled into the rather ignoble LFC tradition of players who'll always get flak and never be really appreciated by some fans - Brian Hall, Peter Cormack, Ray Houghton, etc - but they do actually do a decent job. Certainly, it's beyond question, he needs to improve and, crucially, acquire some consistency, but at his best he really helps the midfield to hum and quietly, quickly and effectively joins things up. I think he was well worth buying, and - don't hit me, but - I still think he'll progress.

I thought he was good against maribor. Recycled the ball well and was efficient

Actually I think a number of us like him - I certainly do - and there's no doubt in my mind that the team plays better than it would without him when he's on song. The problem, which macca rightly identifies, is consistency (he showed a similar pattern at the Toon) and certainly AFAIC part of the reason for being disappointed about some of his displays is precisely that one can see the difference he makes when he is properly at it. I still have hopes for him too.

He's never going to be good enough

A central midfield player needs to be consistent enough so that a 'decent' game is still a 6 or 7 out of 10 and is delivered as a minimum.

When the Shithouse Ghost plays well, there is much to admire, but he has too many bad games when he's not just mediocre, but egregious.

We're only in October and he's already had three or four games when he's been fucking disgusting

I think he's better when he's more advanced. We play him quite deep

He's a good player who plays the odd blinder. Do I want him in the first team? No, as he's way too inconsistent and if we're aiming to compete at the highest levels, he can't be relied upon.

The guy has a serious amount of skill, his ceiling is high. However I'm not the biggest fan at the moment because of how badly he goes missing in some games but there's no denying the talent.

He played well during the week imo but he needs to start imposing himself on games when we're not on top now and help turn the tide rather than being a fair weather footballer.

No one in our team bar, Coutinho has better close control than Wijnaldum. That I can give him. He needs to be more impactful though. His shooting is close to abysmal.
OK That harsh. But he just doesn't get into good positions to shoot. When he does, he just seems a bit hesitant.

Close control masters, IMHO: Countinho > Sturrigde > Mane > Salah > Lallana > Firminio > Gini

He is not shit, I think the frustration with him stems from the fact that we know what he can do, but he just doesn't do it consistently game in game out.

We can say the same for many of our players. If they can all perform near the top of their game in every game we will win the league, no question. The issue is they don't.

The consistency differentiates the world class players to the good players. Unfortunately we have too many good players.

A useful squad option for some games at home against he big teams. Against united he ran with the ball forward with some menace, which is a step up from the usual 2 steps forward, followed by a sideways/ backwards pass.
