Javi Manquillo has hailed Liverpool FC team-mate Glen Johnson as one of the best right backs in the world.
The 20-year-old joined the Reds on loan from Atletico Madrid in the summer and has vied with Johnson for the starting right back.
And the Spaniard says despite the competition, he came to Merseyside to play football.
In an interview with Spanish newspaper AS, Manquillo said: “I came [to Anfield] and I knew what to expect.
Johnson is one of the world's best, but it was the best move for me. Atletico and I decided it was best, I needed to leave and play.”
Manquillo has made 12 appearances so far this season, four more than Johnson – although Johnson missed the whole of September through injury.
Brendan Rodgers handed him his competitive debut ahead of Johnson on the opening weekend against Southampton, and Manquillo is grateful of Rodgers' trust in him.
“It was very important. It is true he did not mind my age or anything. He has helped me a lot.
“Rodgers speaks Spanish and that helped me and Alberto Moreno to understand.
“[The language] is the hardest things, but I have help. Jose Enrique and Suso are some of our guides here.”
Manquillo, who also hailed captain Steven Gerrard as a “legend” and a “great person”, refused to be drawn on his future and whether that lies at Anfield or Atletico.
He also backed the Reds to turn around their current bad run of form.
“My goal is to play the most minutes possible for Liverpool this season. I do not look beyond that," he added.
“The results will come because it is working fine. There are many new players , but it's no excuse. We will be at the level that Liverpool demand.”

LOL

Im actually a little pissed off with these loan deals.

Rafa seemed to have a habit of picking up one free transfer every season. Brendan seems to want a loan deal every season. Probably it makes sense in their head.....but it feels like a bit of small club mentality to take a punt like that every season.

Hopefully there's an option to sign him at the end of the season. He's been decent, definitely better than 'one of the worlds best right back' Johnson.

Fuck that, imagine the possibility to send Degen, Voronin and Jovanovic home and cutting their loans short.

Good god, if BR has told him to emulate Johnson in order to further his career, we're gonna ruin the lad.

Rodgers was telling Johnson to do a lot of the shit he got slaughtered for on here for against Chelsea

I wasn't sure if he was going to go on after the headline to say '... at Cluedo', or Risk or Perudo. He means football. Wow.

Glen Johnson has been offered a new contract at Liverpool - but still looks certain to quit Anfield.

Right-back Johnson is currently on £120,000-a-week but, having lost his England place after suffering a loss of form and injuries, he is being asked to HALVE his money on a £60K per week, two-year deal.

The 30-year-old is set to be out of contract at the end of the season and looks likely to reject the Reds' reduced salary and move abroad on a lucrative free transfer.

There has been strong interest from Roma in Serie A, after they signed England LEFT back Ashley Cole last summer.

Liverpool are embarking on a series of contract talks as they look to tie down England starlet Raheem Sterling and fend off interest from Real Madrid.

Kop boss Brendan Rodgers has also insisted they want to keep captain Steven Gerrard, who is also out of contract at the end of the season.

Gerrard, 34, has insisted the ball is in Liverpool's court as to whether he stays at Anfield as he wants to be playing regularly.

Fuck him, I wish we never signed him, he's inconsistent junk and now it appears that money is the motivation, who'd have thought it. Hopefully for him he goes to Roma and learns how to concentrate for more than one game at a time.

He needs more money just to pay attention
