I was wrong (about a player) thread

I'm suprised no one has mentioned Kristian Nemeth..

What a player he was, that quickly turned out to be shite

Injuries ruined the poor fellas career.. :(

It was a shame about him. When he first came into the picture I thought we might be seeing the closest we'll get to a new Robbie Fowler.

Henderson. I thought he had a good touch and good energy, but thought he was going to be one of these players who would always play within himself.
Sturridge. I thought he'd be a good option for us. I never dreamed he'd be this good. He still doesn't get enough love at times.
Flanagan. No explanation needed

On the other side of things:
Kelly: I thought he'd be in our team for years to come. Injuries did play their part though.
Morientes: I didn't think he'd hit his Madrid heights, but thought he'd do a lot better.

There are probably more.

I was unimpressed with Beardsley. Even a few matches into that season I remember remarking that Aldridge & Barnes were banging them in & he was a waste of space .... that was more to do with a complete lack of understanding at the time, I think

Huh! Yeah I remember that. He started really slowly and he was the big money signing. It wasn't long though before he started to really look the part though. Maybe 6-7 games into the season. Awesome player and ridiculous we ever sold him.

I never thought it was a case of Beardo not starting too quickly TBH. Aldo's goals and Digger's skill were grabbing the headlines and it wasn't a surprise to me that Beardo's more subtle skills got a little bit lost in the process.

He was indeed a terrific player and should have finished his career with us.

You guys must know people who were livid that we signed Barnes at the time. Did they change their opinion quickly or still begrudge the fact we signed a Black player?

I called Downing right despite the blind bullying, the bitterness of the debate that Rosco, Ryan, Modo and myself received for hating that glue ready nag still lingers deliciously ready to be played out on a whim like an ace concealed in the sleeve..

Hodgson was also an obvious bag'o shite.... but unlike Downing I truly didn't know how bad but I thought he would be shite..

I was happily wrong about Rodgers and also had high hopes for Diouf so...

it's tricky stuff.

Apart from Downing... that was fucking obvious... totally obvious ;)

I started a thread about Hodgson being A disaster from the start and I got some amount of abuse. Pilloried like a post from pat about dijouf. From 90% of the boards. One of the few times I was surprised at stuff on these boards. I didn't think Rodgers would be this good mind

I think most people wanted him to do well and give him a chance at least. That would explain why people got on your back, you should support the Liverpool manager (at least to begin with anyway).

It didn't long for Roy to mess up that goodwill.

The biggest one I've been guilty of was none other than the King. I thought he was overrated at Celtic anyway, so when we signed him to replace Keegan I was not happy. There have been others, but none anywhere near as bad as that one.

big cahunas JJ - that is gonna take some topin!

For me, there have been a few, but Iniesta stands out. I remember seeing him in his early 20's and wondered what the fuss was.

Why would you support such a poor choice? It's a nice sentiment but sometimes a choice is so obviously wrong

for me, iniesta looked a bit lost early on his career, unsure what his best position was and even being played as full back or wingback, with little notable pace or strength. thankfully, things changed....

Bad wrong: Paul Ince. I just fucking knew that he was exactly what we were missing in the middle of an otherwise title-contending team... The day we signed him I toild all who would listen that we'd walk the league that year.

Good wrong: Jordan Henderson. Thought he was as bad a signing as we've made in my lifetime when he first got here... Delighted to have been proven this wrong.

Babel, Gonzales, Carroll, Morientes......fucking loads. Im like an a kid when we sign ANY player I think they will be beast.
Exceptions are ones we already KNOW are shit like Cole, Downing etc.
In my head Lazar Markovic is gonna be better than Thierry Henry.

On the flip side I thought after his first few months in the first time Raheem wouldnt make it. Glad to be wrong on that one.
Not sticking the boot in, but you really had me sold on aqulani (sp), I'd never seen him & you made him sound like a phenomenon, I was expecting this beautiful graceful strong player who would wow us all with technique whilst holding his own.

I got a seemingly uninterested Italian fanny who crumpled every time some fucker tried to tackle him.

I thought sterling would be too lightweight til I saw him tussle with a few players & that remarkable strength his body hides so well.

Le gems let me down, I always remember reading the echo whilst very young & lapping up their bullshit, with no other frame of reference or source of info at the time I ended up extremely disappointed. I always remember going to a youth or reserve game le tallec should have been playing & watching him, whilst injured, fucking about in the stands with his mates wearing an astonishingly stupid hat & feeling let down like you can only feel betrayed when you're young enough not to know better & protect yourself with natural cynicism.

Job Cole, I had pegged from the start, was pissed off we'd signed him, even more so watching him get sent off, then a few games later, watching him wave at his daughter & wife in a box whilst playing a match he'd contributed fuck all to & we were being outplayed in (in mark mcs seat so could hear everything his idiot wife was wittering on about above me during the game).

Diouf. I was excited we'd signed a player who made such an impact in an international tournament, then all the old heads who sat (maybe stood, can't remember the year) round me saying those signings rarely worked out. Then his first home match he was warming up & all he was doing was keepy ups & tricks to applause from the stands, whilst his team mates drilled & warmed up properly, then got pissed off with a ball boy/young steward (don't remember which) for not passing the ball back quickly enough when he fucked up a trick. Hated him from that moment on, his actions on & off the pitch made that hatred valid (i was in the kop when he cheered a Bolton goal whilst technically out player & we were paying most of his wages).

That's not a nice thing to say about mark mc's wife

It's a hard one at that stage because injuries can really fuck with a young players career. Perhaps things might have turned out differently had he not gotten injured. I wouldn't think to put him in this thread.

Babel on the other hand... I hoped and hoped. Never happened.

I thought Litmanen and Morientes were both going to be amazing for us. I thought Le Tallec and Pongolle were the future.
