One of the greatest signings in our history.
What a colossal defender he was ...

How high was Sami regarded by those outside of Liverpool? I know it doesn't matter what other people think but I'm just curious. We value him as one of the best around but we never see his name being mentioned along with other great premiership CB's, or do we?

Most neutrals I know talk of him as a steady eddie type, as opposed to the colossus he was. Fuck their opinion frankly.

I'd have him before any other defender I've seen in the PL in the last 15 years.

The sheer variety of attackers he faced, and not one ever consistently got the better of him.

I'm not sure actually. I think sometimes it can be quite hard to shine at CB, unless you're a fixture in the international side, and that also creates issues because once you have a good pairing - Terry and Ferdinand for example - they can stay together for a decade and it's hard to get a look in (Carra).

I suppose he was playing at a very high profile club, captained it, and won lots, so I would imagine he's pretty highly thought of, even if there were lots of other top quality CBs around at the same time in the Premiership: the aforementioned Terry and Ferdinand, King, Carragher, Vidic, Toure, Campbell etc

What a splendid player.

He never won the league, so Sky generation won't have heard of him.

Vidic and Kompany, for instance, are rated as two of the best CBs in the PL era. I think that's nonsense. Both were/are excellent defenders on their day, but are/were prone to lapses in concentration.

If I had to pick the best defenders I've seen in the PL, I'd pick Terry, Adams, Hyypia and Carvalho.

Vidic, Ferdinand, Kompany might have been quicker, stronger and more pleasing to the eye, but in terms of leadership, organisational ability, concentration and reading of the game, they were a notch below the four above.

What a splendid player.

I remember Drogba giving Sami a tough time and I received a few texts from rival fans calling him a dinosaur and finished etc. I think he played for a few more years after that so fuck them. I do remember Sami receiving plaudits and nationwide attention for a super performance against United. He was a colossus back there and didn't put a foot wrong. Match of the day did a piece of his performance. It's on youtube. He took one ball down out of the sky beautifully.

The striker I actually saw give Sami the hardest time was Duncan Ferguson. Hyypia hated playing against him. As would most on one of his good days.

Sami played at least one season without getting a single booking. How many Premier League CB's can say that?

Considering how effective he was, that's a wonderful testament to his defensive skills.

I'm sure others remember the match at Old Trafford when he got injured just before half-time. It was decided to take a gamble and not substitute him because we would need him for the second half. Of course those jammy b@stards scored straight away.

On his day he was unplayable. Pity those days happened about once every 5 years.

I've heard plenty of stories about managers trying to wind him up to get the best out of him. Could go one way or the other. Majority of the time it went the other!

Is that the same game against United that he only was put into the starting 11 after a late injury to Arbeloa? He was outstanding that day.

Sami was ill that day. He was asked to play because even so he was better than anyone else we had. Dogbreath never did that to him a second time.

One of the greatest ever LFC signings. His CL quarter final goals were itself worth the transfer fee.

One of my favorite Hyppia memory was in the 4-1 against Mancs where he was bought in at the last minute. One of the Manc defenders launched it into the sky towards our defense. A very high ball in the direction of Hyppia and Rooney ( i think) was running towards him in the hope of putting pressure and causing him to panic. Cool as f***, Hyppia controls the high ball with his left feet, just kills it with his first touch and then passes - brilliant bit of skill.

Almost none of friends who support other clubs rate him that highly.

They'll say he was a good defender obviously but not in the class of your Rio's, Adam's Terry's etc.

Sami was sick as a dog for that game and was puking before the game. Should never have played. Got subbed.

That was a once off.

One of our very best signings.

We sent scouts to watch another player and found him by chance, which sounds about right.

About Ginsoak anyway. I've probably posted this before, but the game at Old Trafford (I think it ended 1-1) where Ole took Sami out with an uncharacteristic bad tackle, Sami had to be stretchered off. The camera was panning around the players, fans and then came to Fergie walking up the touchline saying "game over".

A few years later Sami pulled up with a hamstring injury a few days before we were due to face them at Anfield. He ended up making the United game to Fergie's bemusement, saying he'd hoped he'd miss the game against them and it was a big plus to Liverpool that he was back.

He also included him in one of his Premiership all time XI's in later years. I hate the cunt, but he clearly had alot of respect for big Sami.

That said, I also remember him saying he was a big fan of the "two Czech lads at Liverpool". So what the fuck does he know.

If it's Baros and Berger we are talking about, I accept that Milan Baros was a bit brainless (although he did win the Golden Boot in Euro 2004). Patrik Berger was a fucking genius though. He was one of those players who it was worth the admission fee just to see in action.
