Serie B introduces green cards for referees to reward good behaviour

Good behaviour is to be rewarded in Serie B this season with referees given a new green card to brandish when players conduct themselves well.

In addition to the normal yellow and red cards, referees are to carry a green card to show in an attempt to promote fair play and sporting gestures.

According to La Stampa, the new system -- which is being introduced on a trial basis -- will come in to effect around the fourth or fifth round of matches.

The innovative idea is for players who conduct themselves well, either by playing the ball out for an injury, or helping the referee with his decision making when he committed a foul which was not seen or touched the ball on its way out if the referee wrongly gives a goal kick, to receive a green card.

Although it has not yet been decided what advantages -- if any -- teams will gain from their players receiving green cards, it is hoped the gesture will be enough to make the game more sporting and set an example to those who disregard the rules.

At the end of the season, a classification will determine an overall fair-play winner, with the leading player likely to win a trophy like the top goalscorer award.

The green card has already been experimented at various youth levels.

Green cards?! *vomits* - I can imagine your team mates would rip the piss out of you mercilessly. At least they would in this country.

This is shit.

Football will be properly shit in 20 years time, the big boys need to sit down and realise that before its too late

This is a retarded idea. However, it'll be pretty funny to watch as no doubt it'll be awkward as hell.

The sooner they introduce a 'Blue' card for being sin-binned, with the referee having an option of say either 10 or 15 mins, the better. The refs are under a lot of pressure when a player has a yellow already or maybe for a 'face-push' or offences of that nature.
Green cards ? Maybe the clubs will introduce fines for any of their players accruing them.

The sin bin would be a great addition to the game for those daft things like taking your shirt off , kicking the ball away or not standing ten yards away - and a second yellow sees a sending off

There should be a technical foul system with resultant sin bin for stuff like that. It's always a nonsense when someone gets sent off for kicking the ball away.

Green cards though, they should mitigate yellows. Like, if you get three green cards your next yellow doesn't count. So you can save them up and then hatchet some weapons grade cunt for free.

The danger with that is that you would just get a load of hollow gestures being made on the pitch. The sin bin is a must. I'd love to see refereeing taking a leaf out of rugby's book. I think it would have such a massive impact and stop players acting like such fannies. The behaviour of players has declined so much over the past 10 years its embarrassing.

I still can't believe they actually brought in the stupid 10 yard rule for a season but are yet to bring in the sin bin system which any sane person can see would make the sport so much better.
Bring in the sin bin and video replay challenge thingy that's being used in so many sports these days.
Those two things would get rid of back chatting, blatant diving and feigning, plus the sort of power play occurring mid game, which we only get to see right now with 5 minutes of the game left.
