Jon Flanagan to Burnley on loan

It's been coming. His performances at the end of last season and this per-season were nowhere near his 2013-14 standard. Hope he rediscovers his form with regular football.

I think Randall is in pole position now to be Clyne's deputy. Impressive again tonight.

Did Trent-Alexander also play RB tonight? One paper seemed to say he played well there in the 2nd half.

He's been miles off the level he needs to be at to make it here since his return.

Hopefully he gets a full year of football injury free.

He needs to play games. There's a very good full-back in there, but he's not going to get to realise it fucking around in the U-21's or the League Cup.

I'd love him to get a full year's football wth anyone. We'll know a lot more about him after that, and the kid will get a chance to build his confidence back up again.

Yeah, I said he needs to play as much as possible in the clear out thread. It's the only way he'll improve.

Good move for him. As everyone has already said, needs playing time to get back to the standard he displayed in 13-14.

Yes, he did play RB in the 2nd half. Hard to judge how he did as the 2nd half was all weird.
Well we know how good he can be going forward so the question is how did he do defensively ? And the 2nd half gave more opportunity to answer that even though most of their attacking seemed to focus on Moreno (wonder why).

I think this is pretty fair. I was a huge fan of his during the big season under Rodgers, and in a season under Kenny too. You have to love a homegrown player who "gets" it and puts his foot in where it hurts - like his challenge early in the game on Sterling last season.

But he never quite came back from injury as the same player, 18 months is a long time to be out the game. I mean, look at how long it's taking Henderson and Sturridge to get back to their best.

This is the right move for all concerned, let him rebuild his fitness, confidence and reputation again. Good luck to the lad.

He seemed to do quite well I thought, he's an intelligent player, very like Woodburn in that sense. He reads the game well and isn't scared to get stuck in, plus he's clever and holds his position quite well and only plays the more risky pass when it's on. Both lads seem to know when to play the right pass, and when to take the sting out of the game a bit.

Never thought he was good enough, saw him get beat by wingers quite a few times, and ball watching at set pieces, but I wanted him as part of the squad. He's generally solid and can cover two positions, and most important of all he's local.
We need some scouse presence in our squad.

I really like Burnley as a club, and think he's going to have a good time there. Good posts from Mark and Ryan. Lets see how he does playing every week for a year.

I wonder if part of our compensation agreement over Ings is to have some sort of deal with them over loaning players?

Shame he won't get a shot at Ibrahimovic this season.

I can't wait for the first person to chop that cunt in half. It will be brilliant.

I'm hopeful that his static, dead-legged and awful Euros, will mean we see a wheezing antediluvian United strike force of Rooney and Ibrahimocunt

Modo in disagreeing with most people shocker.

For all the grit, determination and work rate he has, he's just so limited as a footballer.
Is he ever going to turn into a Clyne, or a Finnan, or even a Glen Johnson for us?
I think most of you know what the answer is.

I recall similar things being said about Finnan when he signed, and though I defended Magic for a long time he was nowhere near as reliable as Flanno in defence, which is still a fullback's priority. Clyne could and should be the best of the lot, but even he's lost ground lately. There's more than one way to be a footballer.

I think most of us remember his form and quality in the only season he has managed to string together a decent amount of games, 2013-14.

When he scored his first goal in a fantastic display against Spurs away. One I was lucky enough to attend. The season when he was given a round of applause by the team after his display in the derby. When he made his England debut at 20 years old.

When his battling, never take a backward step attitude saw praise from fans and players alike.

When his fearsome tackling brought cheers from the stands.

His career has been ruined by injury so far. His return from injury last season did not look promising. There's always been aspects of his game and physical make-up that have raised question marks about his long-term prospects and how far, or high he could get.

But the overall affection for Flanno and willingness for him to succeed is something that fans like you will never understand. And it diminishes you, not Jon Flanagan.
