Lallana - extension talks

He's been one of our best players this year, and we're loaded. Whilst I understand the apprehension, personally I'm fine with it.

Given that we don't operate in a salary cap league, I have no problem with paying him and certain others like Henderson good money. That is, however, only if this spending isn't used as an excuse not to bring in new players in quantities and qualities needed to build a squad that is truly ready to compete. If giving our existing squad paydays is the extent of investing in the playing squad, then I've had enough. Time will tell.

I didn't think i'd need to explain that my first line about Lallana never winning the league wasn't serious.

I thought when i followed it up with ' or more likely' that it was clear enough.

I've no problem with Lallana getting 150k a week, if he keeps up a great run of form to the end of the season.

yeah Mane aside , he was motm tonight . He excels in that deeper role, roaming around making shit happen

I think Ross is being a little obtuse with this one. Lallana is clearly one of our better players and to either lose him or completely demotivate him would be silly in the extreme

I'd much prefer us to be paying more in salary over a shorter period in contracts with players who are of this standard though.

Your players who are either top class, or could well be world class in future, tie them up for as long as possible. Coutinho, Firmino are examples of this imo.

All the players below that, Lallana, Henderson for example, give them a higher salary on a shorter term contract. Those players are more likely to slip below the standard we require during that period than the former group of players & therefore if they're on a longer contract we're more likely to be stuck with them regardless whether we want them or not.

I'd also be tempted to stick players with poor injury records on the secondary list, regardless of talent.

Delighted he's signed on, I'd like to see him finish his career here...he could become a bit of a hero.

I had my doubts about him, but this season he has been fantastic. He and Klopp seem to have an understanding and Klopp is helping find that obvious talent that he didn't show enough in previous seasons. Fingers crossed, he pushes on and continue to be an important player in a team that wins things.

I see the logic but decent players still have a decent residual value - if you give them short contracts it's easy to run down and walk away for free - Lallana is still only 28 not early thirties
