Lallana

He defended like a breath of fresh air when he stood aimlessly beside Joe Allen when he got dicked by Valencia

There's a 33% chance that was just luck.

Apparently.

Lallana is brilliant, the silky bastard. I love how he uses a Cryuff turn as his first touch.

I know. He's got quite a unique style - I can't think of anyone else who plays quite like him. He's certainly got his faults but in terms of receiving the ball and being able to go with either foot he's pretty amazing.

Ibro's got it bang on there, you're not telling me that every centre back we have/have had under Rodgers is shite. Skrtel, Agger, Carragher, Lovren, Sakho, Toure - all good centre backs in their own right who have been much sought after at some stage during their careers, and whom have all looked absolute muck at various points under Rodgers' tenure.

Another point aswell, the other night, Jones played a pass into Skrtel who was stood on the D facing our goal with a Bournemouth player blocking his turn either side. The sort of hapless shite we've seen reduce Mignolet to absolute tatters, is that the fault of both keepers or just garbage "keep the ball at all costs" instructions from Rodgers? Because the end result is usually that we pass it around under pressure and then give it away or kick it into touch. Pointless and destructive to a players confidence.

Heh, no one mentioned that Moreno was fucking nowhere during that attack.

Well there's a 33% chance that was luck as well.

Only a 7% chance it was Rodgers fault though.

Apparently.

I'm actually surprised that there's no threads about Moreno to have a moan about.

He's been one of our most unreliable players for months. He's the left-sided GlenJo.

He's young and adjusting to a new country, league etc whilst the team is horribly underperforming. I don't think we've really judged any of the young players too harshly. Markovic has gotten a bit of stick for being weak and anonymous but nothing like 20M signing would normally get. See the difference with Lovren.

Moreno is absolutely dire in defending.

Something many already knew even before he joined us.

He doesn't need adjusting. He needs improving.

His attacking play was always what caught the eye first, but his defending didn't start off being dire - on the contrary. Along with other good players in our defence, he's been a victim of our overall disorganisation at the back as much as he's contributed to it.

It has to be the system and coaching.
Most teams would kill for the quality of defenders we have on paper.
Moreno has been pretty bad since September which leaves me to believe there is something fairly seriously wrong with the way he's been coached.
He's a Spanish international so he's obviously fairly fucking decent.
It's just all baffling.

Seriously ?

Moreno was a hot topic on these boards before he joined us. He had one of those threads that had pages that could go on forever. In fact, the main debate back then was about his suspect defending, which he had not done himself much justice to disprove.

Yes, seriously. It's true that Seville fans were quoted as wanting him gone because he couldn't defend, but his tackling and covering were mostly fine when he first came into our side. He's just one of a whole list of good defenders in our squad who collectively have been playing like drains, even last season, though we didn't notice so much then because Suarez and the Studge were tearing everybody a new one down the other end. I don't want Rodgers gone but I do want a defensive coach in, and I'd be prepared to see Rodgers go if he can't/won't accept that.

True, in fairness though, Lovren plays in this league and has played every game. Oh. I just realised that's your point. lol

It's funny the thing about "defending", because at least three times during the game the other night, he had players running at him, he didn't dive in at all, he read the game and nicked the ball off their feet like a seasoned centre half. Not bad for a winger who's a fanny. That said, he shouldn't ever, EVER be playing wingback.

Rodgers is telling him to bomb forward, that's the issue with Moreno I believe. He has a mistake in him, that's for sure, but when he stays back and actually defends, he's pretty good at it. However if it's the case that he stays forward despite Rodgers telling him he must get back, then we may have a problem.

While I think he's a good player I'm not sure that's true, is it? I seem to remember a couple of games very early in the season where he was singularly responsible for us conceding.

I don't think he's provided any defensive solidity yet - though he hasn't let us down in attack.

Again our recollections differ! He did give a goal away in his first game but then, by contrast, on more than one occasion his covering in particular saved us when his colleagues in the back four were caught out, and he made one or two tackles which could easily have gone wrong and given penalties away. None of our defenders have provided solidity as such, but that isn't really what Brendan's asked from them.

Looked absolute class again today. Imagine if we had a forward he could play with?
What I've noticed is that he makes the runs of a striker.

So many times he was on the shoulder of a defender, making a run

He's a boss

TBH I've always seen him as more of a deep-lying forward player than a true midfielder anyway.

Hope he's fully fit now. If so, he has to play every game IMO.

Sturridge is worth way more than we paid for him. Does that count?

You could actually argue he wasn't. He's only played 50 odd games in two years, and he would have started every game he was fit for. That's a very poor return.

I mean you could argue it, but I'm not going to.
