Why was he played on Sunday? He does not want to be here and has been poor overall since his return last year. He was so bad on Sunday, that Danny Murphy thought our priority buy was central midfield.

I think we've got the right players, we just need to get the right combination in there. We've got good depth with Allen, Can and Lallana. Someone posted a while ago the stats for Lucas and Gerrard playing together, they don't make for pretty reading, in fact, their record is dreadful.

Agreed, Lucas and Gerrard shouldn't be playing together. Neither should Allen and Gerrard.
Hate to say it again, but Rafa didn't fancy having Gerrard in a central midfield position and it's becoming more and more evident.

Lets face it aswell, if we haven't got the right combinations after spending near £50m on Lallana, Can and Allen, then we're fucked.

We aren't fucked, we just need to blood Can ASAP and ditch Lucas. Get a promising youngster in as back up the rest. Allen and Can can cover Lucas' role. Hell, I probably could better than he does himself.

Lucas was gash but let be honest here he wasnt helped by the fact that Gerrard was as poor as Ive seen him play in a long time. Id like to see the stats on the distance Gerrard and Lucas covered because they seemed to be moving in slow motion everytime Southampton got the ball. Henderson stood out a fucking mile and that wasnt even because he was that good he just wasnt dreadful.

Due to the athleticism of Fernando, Fernandinho and Toure, we really need to play Gerrard, Can and Henderson on Monday, I also think Can's ability to run with the ball would have helped us immensely yesterday.

The time for 'wonderman' is done, he's got to sold if someone will take him, or confined to the bench. Already Can looks 10x the better option, and Henderson and Allen miles better.
Surely someone like west ham would give us a couple of million quid for him.

Didn't Lucas just post a picture on instagram a few days before the match alluding to the "light at the end of the tunnel"?

Not sure why Rodgers thought it would be a good idea to play him.

We were never going to play well in the first game, maybe he wanted lucas there to take the blame and protect his new signings.

It was one of the most baffling decisions Rodgers has made since coming here.

I had to double-take when I saw the line up.

I would bench Gerrard and Lucas for the City game and replace with Can and Allen. Their midfield is brutal and need to be able to match it.

Honestly I was shocked to see Lucas on the pitch. Can should have started. Squiggles, not a bad idea.

I'm not saying I disagree with you, but the chances of Gerrard being benched for the City game are -1000000000%. He'd have to break every bone in his body before Rodgers would consider dropping him.

I'd be happy to see Gerrard play say ~50% of our league games this season.

Fernando would have been an excellent signing for us.
Shame we couldnt get him when his contract was about to expire.
He's probably on massive wages at City though.

Insane that such a good player hasnt got 1 cap for Brazil

Strange decision - Allen or Can need to start vs City. Do we think they will try to mark Coutinho like Saints did or will he get more room?

David Pleat said during the broadcast yesterday that Fernando almost went to Everton two years ago but when James McCarthy signed with the club Martinez decided they didn't need Fernando as well.

It's listening and taking in anything that David Pleat says that's amiss, he is of the Roy Hodgson and Howard Wilkinson club, redundant dinosaurs that have no business in the modern game.

I hate to be that guy to ruin your week with the third and as yet unforeseen possibility. But Allen will start. In place of Coutinho. This is the point where you think about it for a few moments, see it for the fact that it is, and then go to the random picture thread.

Not all CM positions are alike. Rafa played him in CM plenty, but as an almost exclusively attacking option from there, practically a second striker.

Gerrard had pretty much a free role behind Torres. Before that he was playing on the right. Xabi and Gerrard alone in midfield didn't work too well.

That's true as far as it goes, but it's incomplete. He played CM under Rafa before he was switched to the right, and he was switched back to the centre before Torres arrived.

I was hoping Lucas would have been moved on by now (see also Johnson) but the sad reality for me is that Gerrard shouldn't be a first choice starter in our midfield, if we really want to improve things.

Pretty much. But he was playing in front of two defensive midfielders in Xabi and Mascherano.
Remember how Rafa used to pull Xabi aside and give him instructions during the game? Got me thinking that he really didn't depend on Gerrard tactically.

Now there I do agree. I'm pretty sure there was an interview once in which Rafa said something about him not having the discipline to know when to hold his position.

I remember that and I also remember people getting pissed off about it.

You have to be pragmatic. We might play better without Gerrard and be more mobile, pretty to watch and so on. But at the end of the day we'll mostly play like shit as per yesterday, and our best chance to win the game is and will remain Gerrard's ability to pass the ball and put in dangerous free kicks.
