The Serbian is open to dropping down to the Championship for a restart as Rafael Benitez’s side look to go above and beyond in convincing him to join them.

Liverpool's Lazar Markovic is considering an approach from Newcastle United as he looks to resurrect his career in England, Goal understands.

The 22-year-old has fielded plenty of enquiries from abroad, most notably from Sporting Lisbon who were prepared to pay £16 million to sign him permanently.

The Serbian was not interested in returning to Portugal, where he celebrated a treble with Benfica, while Schalke and AC Milan also explored the possibility of recruiting him.

Markovic is Rafael Benitez’s first-choice option to strengthen his attack out wide ahead of West Brom winger Callum McManaman, and the three-time SuperLiga winner is open to dropping down to the Championship for a restart.

Newcastle are prepared to go above and beyond to convince the player to make the switch to St James' Park, either on loan or on a long-term deal.

Given Sporting were willing to part with £16m for Markovic, Liverpool will count that figure as his valuation for a permanent move.

Meanwhile, Luis Alberto's €5m transfer to Lazio and Andre Wisdom's season-long shift to RB Salzburg are both nearing completion.

They just signed the wrong Lazar....

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Ipswich Town striker Daryl Murphy and Moroccan left-back Achraf Lazaar for undisclosed fees.

We paid £20 mill.for him and his career has completely stalled. It would be ridiculous to turn down £16 mill.if that were on offer.

Absolutely. He has been a poor signing. 16 million would represent good business.

So ... he went to Sporting Lisbon. i actually missed that yesterday.

I assume Sakho stayed?

Yep.

Where are all the people who were so confident that after tragic, deplorable misuse of Markovic by Rodgers ("he played him as wing-back BOOHOOHOO") that Klopp would give him every chance in his preferred position, show patience, employ his much-vaunted training and motivation, and show everyone the real, world-class amazing Markovic who would light up the premiership?

What happened?!

The pre-season happened. Where even against average-tiring opposition, he failed to light it up when called upon.

I don't know but I've still got a shirt with his name on the back so i'm hoping he comes good!

Oh, right. So he was a spineless mediocre shithouse, just like everyone said all along?

At least we can cross that one off the Rogers misdemeanour list. Along with Sakho.

I just have his name on my list, there's no need to go into each individual misdemeanour.

He played under BR, average to poor at best.

He then went to Fenerbahce, average to poor at best.

He came back, in the pre season games, average to poor at best.

And yet there were still posters advocating for us to play him a whole season to "give him a chance". It's not as if he didn't have his chances.

I can understand why some would have a soft spot for Lucas but am scratching my head for this guy.

I can understand the soft spot for Lucas but never this guy.

There were very few posters who had anything near a 'soft spot' for Markovic, and those that did are generally wrong about everything else too
