David Moyes took over last July but could not keep Sunderland in the Premier League
Sunderland manager David Moyes has resigned following the club's relegation from the Premier League.
The end of the Black Cats' 10-year stay in the top flight was confirmed when they lost to Bournemouth last month.
Moyes, 54, informed chairman Ellis Short of his decision to step down at a meeting in London on Monday.
"I wish the players and my successor well in their efforts towards promotion back to the Premier League," said Moyes.
Former Everton and Manchester United boss Moyes took charge in July last year, after Sam Allardyce left to become England manager.
Sunderland finished bottom of the table this season with 24 points, having won only six games.
"I pursued the services of David Moyes for a considerable period prior to his appointment last summer, which makes the announcement of his departure difficult for everyone concerned," said owner Short.
He said that Moyes was not taking compensation for his departure, calling it a "testament to his character".
"In the days ahead we will take some time for reflection, and then focus on recruitment and pre-season as we prepare for our Championship campaign. We wish David well in the future," added Short.
The Scot had faced calls from Sunderland fans to quit and initially said it was "too soon" to commit to the club following relegation.
However, earlier this month he suggested he would stay with the club in the Championship next season, saying: "I know what needs to be done to get back in the Premier League."

Chelsea worthy champions - Moyes
In a club statement on Monday, Moyes said: "I would like to thank Ellis Short and the Board for giving me the opportunity to manage Sunderland and the fans for always being so passionately supportive of their club."
This is the first time Moyes has been relegated as a manager, having warned supporters just two games into the season that his squad would struggle.
After 11 years in charge of Everton, Moyes left in 2013 to replace Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United but was sacked a year into a six-year deal at Old Trafford.
He was also dismissed after only a year in charge of his next club, Spanish side Real Sociedad, before taking over at the Stadium of Light.

I loved his tenure at Utd and wished he would've stayed longer. Actually looking back that whole thing was fucking hilarious. I really like Moyes!

Rodgers will probably get hired by a prem team this summer so he'll end up at Celtic where he started

Yeah, Rodgers will get a few interesting offers, no doubt. Suppose it would depend on what the offers are, and his loyalty to Celtic, but one season seems a bit too hasty to move on

Mind you, what the hell can he do to top this season? They'll never do much in Europe

Surely some other Spanish or Italian club can take a punt on him. We need more moments like this:

Looks to me like the ManUre fiasco knocked all the stuffing out of him. He should now stay on Easy Street and just do the odd bit of media work. (He may have to.)

Poor the Celtic. From the bouncy, puppyish enthusiasm of Rodgers to Moyesie.

Imagine his first press conference.

"It's all doon hill from here, we will struggle with this squad... You were a wee bit cheeky there, you better watch yourself, you may get a slap".

His career is dwindling away. He must look back at the last 3 years and want to slap someone. Anyone at all.

I remember when he came back from Spain he came up with the brilliant observation that 'everyone likes a sleep in the afternoon over there - what we would call a "siesta"'.

His time at Sunderland was textbook Moyesy: announce the club's in a relegation fight more or less immediately in August, cancel the Christmas party, buy several shite players in January, insult the senior pros in spring, and give up in May. Top class.

I'd be interested to know what the true reaction to this is from people within the game. Going back some years I remember reading an article in (I think) the "Telegraph" about what Prem managers at that time thought of one another. Two things in particular stood out to me: Mark Hughes was the manager most of the rest would avoid getting into a fight with, and Moyes - to my surprise, I must admit - was the one most disliked by his managerial colleagues, though no clue was offered about why.

To his credit here, he resigned, accepted that he failed and didn't take or wait for a compensation package.

Let's face it, most others would have done it and have done it. He's a shit manager, but he showed some moral fibre there. A shame a few others don't do the same.

But at this juncture I'm surprised no one has posted the Everton plaque in the pub about him being a winner even though he isn't a winner and is manager of the decade.

You don't need clues.

Although I'd be surprised if he was less popular than Alan Pardew

There was a compensation package. He was obviously sacked and banked the dough but called it resignation to save face. They said on the radio he was paid up the one and half year of his contract.

Ah ok, it was reported differently at first.

Yeah I was thinking that - It's easy to mock but from all accounts he just turned down a reported £3mill. I'm a pretty moral guy - but then Sunderland is a fucking shithole so I'd have taken the money. Taken the family on a boss around the world trip. Spent the rest on putting all of the kids through education and giving the rest to Wateraid (or one of Oncy's bike charity jaunts) I'd rather that then some cunt footballer nabbing the cash for sitting on the bench and then buying a pink bedroom (Stephen Ireland) or 1950's barber shop chair and having a salon set up in your home (That preening twat Sterling) - If any of that doesn't suite give to SHELTER in Sunderland. Football is absurd really so it would nice address a little balance.

Yes, his sunny, outgoing personality will ensure he's a huge hit on TV.

Re: thread title – does it imply Moyes is a cat or something like that? I thought his nickname was Gollum?

If Motes ever was manager of the decade, the decade would get relegated and everyone would have to go back in time.
Id take that. This decade has been fucking shit.
Terrorists, Loom bands, Shit weather, Dead rock stars, Hipsters, Vegans and fucking PPi

The fucking 40's were better and that was 5 years of war and 5 years of depression.
