I don't think I can be arsed to do this again. I attempted to keep things in perspective last year and completely lost it toward the end. I never was as convinced by Rodgers as by Benitez at his best, but I didn't think he would end up looking like a certain naked emperor, so quickly. The writing was on the wall over the summer though. I didn't have great expectations for this season, but I expected some competency.
I know how its going to go on here, its all so predictable. I remember how this felt the last couple times around. The names have changed and not much else.
Maybe I'm kidding myself and this miserable post is just my little part of that same predictable cycle, and of course, I'll keep watching. I've been made to. Each time we do this, though, the whole mythos and magic of Liverpool erodes that bit more, and it becomes more like watching the cyclical comings and goings of a company that has the wherewithall to keep going, but no great direction or solid management. Well, I'm intimately familiar with that sort of company, and all its boring joy.
Rodgers definitely started believing his own rhetoric last year, and others believed it to. Every manager looks like a genius when things are going swimmingly, even the ones that are quite obviously not that bright. It's more a time for some work now though, and time will tell if he's got it in him. It certainly doesn't look like it, and there won't be much time of course. The club have already indicated started sharpening the guillotine, you know, by saying that his future is safe. That's how it starts.
