NFL - Offseason, Draft & 2018/19 Season

NFL player names are still the business .

Baker Mayfield is a superb name and he could be the best QB in the draft.

Other great names in the draft:

KEKE COUTEE
HERCULES MATA’AFA
WILL CLAPP
EQUANIMEOUS ST. BROWN

Time to whip out this classic then

I like all the ones from Hawaii and Nigeria they are always the best.

Still can't beat Ochocinco tho.

Steelers expected to Tag Bell. Bell stated he'd retire if they did that.

Is Bell a man of his word?

Are Steelers being dickheads?

Have they offered him a contract or just decided to tag him ?

The latter is a bit of a dickhead move but it might be better for the Steelers not to sign him long term given the attrition rate of running backs

I expect they've offered him one, he's turned it down as report suggests unless dramatic turnaround in events Bell will be tagged.

I know they don't want to lose him, so what they should do is either use a different tag so they get compensation or tell him he can leave if he signs the tag.

Also, looks like Browns been listening to me. Barkley fast becoming the favourite for overall #1 pick. And Rapaport pretty much confirming it.

Its the smart move. But its Browns.

Deals were offered but I don't think we are close on our demands.

I don't think we can afford not to tag him or trade him to be honest.

I'd be quite surprised if he and Martavis are there at the start of the season.

I love Bell but it is a passers league. Can we afford 30m or whatever to keep him. Dunno.

I think I'd trade at this point.

Swap for Lewis? He's a poor mans Bell for sure. But very similar styles.

Does tag essentially mean transfer list?

(Sorry for questions, I'm just learning lingo)

No.. You have different types of Tags. In this instance and most commonly referred to is Franchise Tag. This means he can't leave or play for another team. He needs to sign the contract in order to play, however in return he will get one of the highest salaries for his position in the league.

A team can only franchise tag one player per season. And only happens at the end of a contract.

You can only franchise tag the same player twice in succession. He would become an 'unresticted free agent' next year.

Basically thats what the Tags are doing, stopping the player leaving for nothing.

In NFL the capital for players is draft picks rather than cash to a team.

The other much less common tag is transition tag. Where a team again can only use it once per season, but basically means a player can negotiate with another team to determine his 'fair value' in salary. The current club can either match the highest salary offer, or let the player leave.

Restricted free agents are much like the above. However a team received draft picks if a player leaves, the value of which is determined by performance stats.

I've tried to put in laymans terms, however there are lots of little nuances attached to each which I haven't stated, or we'd be here all day.

Players don't like it obviously Fabs because they get paid a lot for the year but a career ending injury............no contract.

I think Cowboys will land Martavis Bryant for a 3rd-4th round pick ...
Yeah someone will. I think he's worth a second round pick to be honest.

I think Bell would be worth an early first round pick.
I'd trade him to the Browns or Giants for 1 or 2 spots.

Bryant is easily worth 2nd potential wise ...

Bell is 100% a 1st rounder in a trade but I don't think any team will bite. Cleveland should give you a 2nd and 3rd to see if you'll bite (they'll have the cap room)

Cleveland give us that number 4 I reckon it happens. No way we don't stick with the tag if we are offered a 2nd round pick.

Giants are probably a more likely bet with that number 2 pick. There are a lot of QBs this year.
Bell + our 29th pick for their 2........ Yup I'd take that to free up some cap space.

That said depends on Conner and his MCL injury.

Expertly explained

Thanks

I cannot see Cleveland give up a first round draft for Bell. They can get Barkley for one-fifth of Bell's salary.

I love watching Bell play. I also think he gives a Suarez style weapon on the field for the Steelers. But given how poor our defense is, the baggage, salary cap issues, might be worth trading him.

But Steeler's traditionally have not horded high draft picks. They have focused on finding value in the lower draft rounds. So not sure how this will pan out.

Don't get me wrong Peekay I'd keep him, love the boy. I don't think it's the smart move though.

I was firmly in the keep him camp but his media statement few days before the Jacksonville game pissed me off. Not the content. I respect his decision on not wanting to be franchise tagged. But the timing.

Same as you. I love watching him dance through the field.

Um.. No. Barkley will go to Cleveland if they want a RB. Giants may bite if they don't fancy any of the draft class QBs but for me its extremely unlikely. You may get a 1st and 4th round pick and send Bell plus a pick the other way.

However most teams won't pay Bell's salary.

I know it's fanciful. But if they wanted to go for Barkley wouldn't it make more sense to give us their number 4 pick, use the 1 pick to pick up a QB and get Bell :)

The Browns could have it all.
And they have the money and the cap room.

Regardless won't happen.

Not what I read.. Basically he's said its Pittsburgh or retirement. He doesn't want to be traded.

What was reported yesterday:

"Bell said he wasn't bluffing when he told ESPN in January that he'll contemplate retirement if asked to play on the tag another year. All options are on the table for Bell, who doesn't plan to sign a tag any time soon and would likely skip training camp once again.
"I just have to decide if I'm going to play when the time comes," Bell said.

Am I missing something? You said he said he wasn't being serious.

That says he was and is being serious?
