[article]Liverpool are on the brink of selling left-back Brad Smith to Bournemouth for £6million.

The Reds have accepted an offer for the Australia international, who has been granted permission to hold talks with the Cherries.

Smith is set to leave the club's pre-season tour of America and fly back to the UK.

Boss Jurgen Klopp has been in the market for a new left-back all summer and will pursue a replacement to compete with Alberto Moreno for a starting spot.

It will be the second time this summer that Liverpool have done business with Bournemouth following the £15millon sale of England Under-21s winger Jordon Ibe.

The ECHO understands that sell-on and buy-back clauses will be included in the deal for Smith.

The 22-year-old Academy graduate has made 11 senior appearances for the Reds[/article]

Good deal here - but that means we really need a LB to either replace Moreno, or at least challenge him for his spot.

This just shows the huge financial gulf between Premier League and other countries' leagues. Any player who is remotely in demand in the EPL, like Smith, Allen or Ibe, will command a sizable fee. In contrast, any foreign player who failed to settle in the EPL is almost unsellable now – that's why there is almost no movement on Alberto, Markovic and Balotelli and we'll be desperate for any kind of offer that doesn't involve a loan.

This kind of turns the idea of an "English premium" on its head – it's almost safer now to buy "EPL-proven" players, even if they cost 2-3 times as much, because they will have resale value no matter what. It's like buying an apartment in an overheated real estate market like New York or London – it's outrageously expensive, but also it's the safest investment because no matter what you do, it will increase in value over time.

So we've already picked up 40 odd mill in sales? It'll end up being close to 80mil going out in the summer

Well considering we paid that for Alberto, who has no discernable function, whilst Brad Smith looks like a really promising LB who looks good enough to make it in the PL, then is it really 'wow'?

Alberto is far, far more talented though. Had he been able to produce the same performances for a mid-table English team as he did for Depor last season, we would be looking at £20M+. Unfortunately his style doesn't fit the EPL and Spanish teams (outside the top 2) have no money.

He's appeared 11 times for us in two seasons in all comps.
Played 10 games for Swindon in League 1.

Sure he's somewhat promising but I would have been happy with about 1/3 of what Bournemouth offered.

9 caps for Australia...he must of caught the eye when England played them, he played quite well that game.

Yeah he did well in that game, but I believe they their eyes on him for a much longer time than that.

True enough.

Just nice that we are on the right side of one of these deals for a change.

good deal. We're gonna be loaded at this rate if we sell Benteke too. I'm demanding a big ass marquee signing and soon. One who doesn't mind half the wages he'd get at Utd etc and who doesn't like playing in Europe.

What's wrong with Bournemouth.

Surely we'd have sold for less in both cases.

Money being thrown about on nothing players these days is nuts.

The market's fucked. 34M for Allen, Ibe and Smith, none of whom I'd really want in our team.
Nearly as bizarre as 100M for Pogba.

Moreno will hopefully back up whom we buy
I'm beginning to doubt that is the case. More and more it seems that Klopp wants someone young and malleable to compete with Moreno, not to supplant him. Moreno created more chances than any other FB in Europe last season (Hector was #2) and so maybe Klopp feels he can coach the defensive side of the game into Moreno. Add that to his comments yesterday re. adding goals to the team and it's clear he wants a very attacking team this season.

On the upside Chilwell it seems has been unable to agree a deal with Leicester and so that may be back on again.

I think I agree with you there on Moreno. Interesting about Chilwell, he must know we'll offer more in wages. Leicester risk losing him for tribunal-determmined fee.

It'll be interesting to see whether he develops and improves at Bournemouth. He's made for English football in terms of physical attributes and we've seen the odd good cameo from him but still looks like it hasn't quite come together for him in terms of his overall game.
