I wonder whether Gareth Barry could be Martin Atkinson's love child, he was treated with such leniency. His early scything-down of Lallana was a booking every day of the week, but the card stayed in Atkinson's pocket.

He booked him for that tackle.

Indeed. The key word is probably "early" - in fairness to Atkinson, about whom I stand by what I've said, few referees seem to give cards out that soon after the kickoff.

No, I mean, "The games gone" as in if people think that is worthy of a red card, then I give up. If one of our players was sent off for that, there would be uproar.

Never a red card in a million years. Definite yellow yes. And he should have been sent off later for the 2nd yellow on Balotelli (or the handball).

Just wondering what you see in Markovic that makes you think he'll be quality?

He's got serious pedigree as a young talent, and had looked good every time I'd seen him play for Benfica.

But he looks like the pace of the PL has come as a real shock to him. It was clear before now that he'd need a bit more time than most. Why BR started him yesterday is a fucking mystery, it's almost cruel on the lad.

I agree with this Jew.

It just comes across as bitter, I like Jules but cannot believe he can think that it was a straight red.

I haven't heard anyone, pundits, papers, anyone on twitter, anyone I know (both blues and & reds) say that it was a straight red. In fact I dont think its even been suggested anywhere that it should have been a straight red. It's unbelievably biased in my opinion, to suggest it was.

Anyway, that's my thoughts on the matter. Back to the Golf.

Are you going to delete your post?

Sorry, you fellas are right, I got mixed up with his second tackle on Mario in what passes for my head these days.

Very interesting analysis of Mignolet. Achterburg .. what have you got to say in defence of your keeper ?

Achtenberg was here for Reinas decline and Ming hasnt improved. Loads of people claim its down to the goalkeeping coaching aswell. We should be looking to improve there aswell.

Well, I know people felt like we played better this game and so didn't feel so bad - I felt utterly gutted. Everton was a micro-cosm of what has frustrated me for the last 2 1/2 months.

Mario should have finished it two minutes after Stevie put us 1 up. Everton looked unlikely to score at all so two would have killed them.

Ming has just about finished me. He's a superb shot-stopper IMO but the rest of his keeping is terrible. I truly believe that the main problem with our defense is we don't have a keeper who genuinely organises them. Pepe of five years ago would have our defense in much better shape. Valdez would, IMO, be a great addition. Joe Hart, if City are stupid enough to let him go, would be sensational.

Lallana was very good in terms of work rate, control, looking to create. His performance in this game underlined our problem and what frustrates me. We were never going to replace Suarez with anyone else in world football - he was the best player in the world last season IMO. However, that doesn't mean we shouldn't have tried to replace at least one of his strengths. His effort and work rate were top class; his guile and creativity were top class; his leadership and drive were top class; his goal scoring was top class. We have not signed a single player to match his work rate; not a single player to match his creativity and guile; not a single player to match his leadership - certainly not up front; not a single player to match his goal scoring.

I fully understand Rodger's approach in strengthening the squad and the fact that Europe was going to put a big strain on the club. However, coping with the strain is massively different from competing with the opposition. If we can't score goals then we're going to be out of most competitions by the winter. I hope desperately that I'm wrong but I don't expect to get out of the group in the CL. The league cup - I think Swansea will put us out next round. That leaves the FA cup and the league (where I think we'll be mid-table).

At the start of this season we looked very attractive; very close 2nd in the league and back in the CL. IMO we needed to capitalise on that to bring in at least one player or maybe two who would make a big difference. If we're out of the CL by January and mid-table in the league then the attraction of signing for us will have been depleted.

I know we played better against Everton ..... but we always do. If the team couldn't lift their performance for a match like that then there's no hope. If they can re-produce that sort of performance against Basel and then West Brom then I'll be supremely happy to be proven wrong. As it stands we're going to find ourselves relying as heavily on Sturridge as we did on Suarez. Daniel is good but nothing like the player Suarez was for us. Whichever way you look at it the Suarez departure has weakened us tremendously and we really don't seem to have had a plan as to how to counter that. The somewhat vague theory that Sterling 1 year older + Coutinho 1 year older + Lallana minus Suarez would somehow improve us was never realistic.

We have a pattern of following 2nd place in the league with a dreadful season. I hope Rodgers has at least two targets in mind for January and a plan to get us through till then which can put an end to this pattern.

It sounds inconceivable for a big professional club, but I wonder if Achtenberg would have lasted this long if he wasn't such a nice bloke. If you look cold and hard at his work, it is, as you say, pretty dismal.

@Wizardry I think it's interesting what you say about not attempting to replace particular qualities of Suarez, and I've had thoughts along a similar line. I felt at the time that someone like Juan Iturbe, while clearly not as good or rounded as Suarez, at least provides some of his magical unpredictability. Just that element of creativity.

It's a good point and something I'm surprised didn't seem to occur to Rodgers.

Mignolet will improve when he gets consistency in front of him, both in personnel and form. He's yet to have a run of either in front of him.

All great goalkeepers had a great defence in front of them
Yeah, see I just think this is backwards. Our defense will improve, IMO, when they get a keeper behind them capable of organising them.

Ming's effort with Skrtel has happened several times this season already. That's exactly the sort of thing that breeds uncertainty in a back four.

I agree completely.

I don't quite. For me the truth is somewhere between the two. You need *both* your keeper *and* your back four to function properly. Each is entitled to expect more from the other than any of ours have produced so far this season.
