Insignificance

Nice win. Should have burried a few more but I'll take the points today.

Defence was solid. Not worried at all actually aside the Benteke sitter. Klavan solid. Matip as well. Promising from Robertson.

Midfield worked hard and Milner gave og dynamism. Controlled the game well. Front three struggled for rythm first half. Better after the break and interchanged well. Promising from Solanke.

Everyone from Studge to Klopp is about a 6-8. No one outstanding, more solid than anything.

The new kids - Robertson, Solanke and Gomez played well but the whole team were, on occasion, sloppy with their forward passes.

However, 3 points, a clean sheet at home. A draw and 2 wins for the beginning of the season. So not too shabby.

Robertson really puts in very dangerous crosses.

Gomez was ace.

Klavan was very solid

Matip was excellent

Thought all the forward line looked off today but should still have had more. Bit worrying this as it was the same vs. Hoff.

Henderson played a captain's role, leading by example. Bar a couple of poor passes.

Wijnaldum battled well in MF but lacked creativity up front.

Ming was solid too.

Pretty good all round by the v.1.5 team.

Easily Klavan's best game for us. Met Benteke's physical challenge and gave him very little throughout the match.

Robertson blowing away the cobwebs of mehs that greeted his arrival. We still don't know if he can defend well enough but he's certainly got enough offensively to be optimistic at this stage.

I'm looking forward to seeing him and TAA on the opposite flank whipping balls in.

A nervy and ordinary performance, against a mediocre side, but a win and three points, which is all that counts. Klopp's reaction to the opening games saw him drop several players and some of those decisions worked better than others, but it is worrying that so many changes were deemed necessary.

Mignolet (6) not very busy, made one or two routine saves.

Robertson (8) impressive debut in place of the axed Moreno. Attacked with pace and sent in numerous crosses. Will be pleased with how it went and rightly so

Matip (7) much improved after a dismal start to the campaign, needs to maintain this level of performance

Klavan (6) brought in to replace the wretched Lovren and was surprisingly solid overall, but he still looked cumbersome and isn't good enough

Gomez (6) Poor first half, looked clumsy and unsure. Much better in the second half but needs to work on all aspects of his game.

Henderson (7) unfussy and used the ball well, looked more mobile and fit too. Never going to be a world class player but can be a useful workhorse if he stays fit

Milner (6) typical impressive work rate and got around the pitch well, even if there's an obvious limit to his creativity and guile

Wijnaldum (5) better display than his previous two, and very odd that he kept his place. It's understandable that Gini has an aversion to bottles, but he's such a shithouse sometimes and hides more often than Anne Frank

Mane (8) most dangerous player we have and always looked the most likely source of a goal, which he scored as usual.

Sturridge (5) brought in to play as the central striker, but apart from one or two moments of class, he didn't present enough of a threat.

Firmino (5) moved from his striking role after only one game, but he's too slow to be effective in a wider position, and his lack of pace and threat meant he was peripheral at best. There's no way he should be starting games ahead of Salah

Subs

Salah (7) added the obvious pace we lacked and looked a threat, even if he isn't anywhere near Mane's level

Solanke (7) good movement and showed the instincts of a proper striker. He should start the next game along with Mane and Salah in attack.

I must be more biased than I realise because Klavan (incl the Benteke chance) looked slow in mind and body to me.

He's nowhere near good enough.

I thought Mane was poor all game (probably due to slight injury), nowhere near an 8 for me, even though he scored a decisive goal. Firmino wasn't peripheral, he was quite sloppy in the first half, but improved in the 2nd, should have had 2 assists late on.

Well, I'm now shitfaced, I've lost my voice, & my non footy liking brother in law has repeatedly stated he wants to go the match when we get home & was jumping about the bar with the Liverpool fans, saying he had no idea why he hasn't been following Liverpool cos it's fun as fuck!

I'd say that's a fucking win in anyone's book!

I thought it was a flat performance against opposition that didn't look that interested.

I know we won, and that's great, but it was very underwhelming and unless we sign some fantastic new players we're coming 6th or 7th.
Yup

Lovren V Klavan

Klavan is a limited player. He gets done when on 1v1 quite a bit. But he is arguably the more consistent player and he is better on the ball. You don't see him panicking too often. What you see is what you get from him.

Lovren overall is a better player to Klavan. But he loses concentration much too often. He makes rash challenges in areas he shouldn't be making. He also have his brain fart moments. He loves thrashing the ball out like some big time charlie when what we need is calm and collective play especially when we are under pressure.

Overall i'm torn on who to choose because both are not good enough.

Bring on VVD.

He'd have much less fun at the match. Just bring him to the king Harry.

Not really a post match reflection, but in a way it might turn out to be a good thing that we haven't 'peaked' too early in the season (see Chelsea last season, drew and lost some matches but regrouped and didn't look back after that). Hope that this time next week we'll have confirmation of being in the CL and continue improvement with a few excellent additions to the squad.

I did actually say repeatedly that that bar was more fun than going the match, more scousers there too (no offence intercedes to our many wools!), & everyone agreed with me.

There's a big market for a reds themed bar in the city centre imo.

Where was this?

Very uninspired and flat for most of that - Deserved the win but were blessed the way we got it. I'll take it, 'coz it had horrible 0-1 written all over it, but I'm worried for the season ahead...

Mane was the one true top player on the field, as he usually is. We've got a good 'un there. Matip was better and coped well in a few tight spots. Henderson and milner were their normal selves - Run all day, create next to fuck all. Firmino wasn't at the races for much of the game, and Salah and Solanke had very positive impacts whjen introduced.

Like everybody, I was impressed by Robertson going forward. But I was equally terrified that he may be a Scottish Moreno when he wasn't even in the picture for the move down his side that led to Benteke missing that sitter... Replays showed him barely making it back into our box as the shot was being taken - Worrying to me.

Going to Germany on Tuesday, I felt that the results are FAR more important than the results for the next three... Thankfully, we've gotten away with two wins since then, and if we can make it three on Wednesday, I'm optimistic that there'll be a couple of signings on the way to pick us up in a few areas we desperately need help in.

We fucking won. First home win for ages against this shower of shit. 3 points in the bag!!! I am going to get drunk and laid (I am sure about 50% success rate at least!!) :):)

3 points so happy but as others have said, the signs for the season ahead are not looking great.

We could do with another attacking option because Sturridge looks done, Origi is just out of it and we're utterly reliant on Mane. Maybe, given our struggles to get deals over the line with clubs that don't want to sell, going after Draxler wouldn't be a bad idea?

Yeah, Sturridge really does look done. Even if he remains fit, he's probably only half the player he was.

Maybe, but he still has the best feet of any of our attacking players. He gets into tight spots and out again with regularity.

I don't doubt that his skill, control, technique and finishing ability are all still there, but he doesn't look capable of anywhere near the same speed, and he seems far less mobile in general

We badly need a new striker
