Post Match Reflections

I've thought about that .. how/who we are going to replace him/with. We've just lost 31 goals from Suarez (plus assists) and Stevie contributed 14 more (plus assists) last season. Trying to replace that 44 goals (and assists) would be a major task in one Summer, a Masherano type figure in front of the back four would help our defence but castrate our attack. Until we have midfielders and attackers who don't need the major assistance of SG then he's irreplaceable in some ways. It's not all about the defence and IMO that's not why he's playing in the DM position even if he isn't a DM. It's to give him that space he needs to do what Coutinho does, but from deeper, and at which he is so brilliant.

I believe that BR has to take this season to revamp and reorganise the forwards and attacking midfielders before turning his attention to DM. Hence the reason he's went after Lallana / Markovic and a Remy/Cavani/Falcao.

I do wish those Alex Song rumours were true though.

The large majority of Gerrard's goals were penalties, so they should be replaceable.

Manquillo - the good bits. Promising debut though he showed his age / inexperience at various points in the game. Also went to ground or was getting tossed to the ground a bit in the first half but got better at staying up in the second half. A few timely interceptions as well.

Nice. Not once did Southampton get past him despite doubling up on him, not once did his pace let him down or his supposed poor positioning prevent him making an interception. Lovely first touch too, some of his first touch lay-offs were excellent. And how on earth did he get so far up the pitch to take (Gerrard's ?) long pass ? 19 yrs old and making his debut, I have high hopes for this youngster .. as I said before he even arrived.

Surprises me who Manquillo went from being a reserve at Athletico to being first choice at Liverpool.

Were you surprised when those reserves Studge and Coutinho became first choice at Liverpool too after being reserves at their clubs? :)

He actually did start quite a few games ... got injured (the Ronaldo header) and Simeone never changed his team ... One of the criticisms (few of them!) I've heard of Simeone is that he'd rather keep a settled line up than chop n' change ... Juan Fran made the position his own and Simeone rightly stuck with the player.

Not really, because we had the likes of Downing and Adam in our team.

BAM!

Yes I know (9 I think it was) however it's not just his goals, it's his ability to instantly turn defence into a dangerous attack, to play defence splitting passes from deep and to relieve pressure by spreading the play into the far corners of the pitch added to his ability to almost never lose possession (bar a slip now and again). To say nothing of one of the best FK deliveries in the game today.

We would be adding defensive resolve but losing an attacking threat. Masherano or Gerrard. Not easy to balance because few DMs (any ?) possess both of their qualities.

N.B. I'd be happy replacing him around the 70-75 mins mark in most matches though.

Manquillo only ever started 6 games. Maybe you are thinking of Moreno who started to come into the Sevilla team 18 months ago ?

He started the first few games of the season last year (his first I think in the first team) before getting injured.

There's only city who won by more than one goal this weekend. I take it to mean everyone is cagey, no one battered anyone, and that everyone who won should be happy they got that first game out the way with three points.

And City were lucky too ... if Newcastle had had any striker worthy of the name then they wouldn't have lost and could easily have won.

Well, he did get caught a few times, but those are not in the clip. I said the clip's just about the good bits - I should have said it omitted the not-so-good parts. ;)

I'm recalling from (probably faulty) memory here, but I think it appeared to me sometimes he wasn't sure if he or the helper was going to make the switch to the runner or stay on the passer with the ball.

Anyway, a decent debut for the youngster. I'd rather a trier than a slacker.

Hahaha, it must be quite exciting for Henderson to be playing as well as he is given how his career started here. He looks like he's still coming to terms with how good he is at times.

Yep, & if my memory is right, the season following a world cup is never brilliant, even when teams perform well for a while it all gets bogged down after Christmas as accumulated fatigue hits in.

I may be wrong but I doubt we'll see as many big scorelines as we did throughout last season.

I don't think there has been a "turn around." I think he is a young player who has just progressed. He was never that bad. Initially he just had some rough edges that were always going to be smoothed out as he gained skill and confidence.

I think playing in a position & system which suited his strengths more has a lot to do with his ascendance ...

I think Rodgers deserves a load of credit. Look at the way Sterling, Flanagan and Suarez improved too. It seems if you want to improve he'll get the best out of you.

Yep, Roger's only has time for players who listen and can/want to be coached.
