Liverpool 3 Paris Saint-Germain 2: Match Ratings

PARIS.
Have you ever been? Romantic capital of the world, apparently. I’ve never been, but my bird’s auld fella lived there for a bit. Said there is dog shit everywhere and you can’t lift your head off the floor. Jib it.
Alisson: 7
He’s massive, you know. Watched him from The Kop for most of the second half stretch his legs. Nothing to do, really. Gave it away in the buildup to their goal but you know, in the context of the game, so fucking what.
Trent: 9
Best game of the season. Seriously. Imagine if he played for them, every cunt would be crying after him. Glorious.
Virgil: 8
He can pass the ball better than our ‘keeper and he can pass it better than Xabi Alonso. Made a great block from possibly that mad fella from Stoke just before the winner. Unlucky for their goal as well, mind you. Scruffy cunts.
Joe Gomez: 8
Somehow in the top five centre halves in the world. Footy is mad, isn’t it? Our fan base were swallowing their undies because we didn’t sign anyone to play next to Virg and he steps up and just starts taking the puss. What a typo, by the way. Took that cat and hid it under his bed.
Andy Robbo: 9
Up against Mbappe. Sound. Give him it. Beat me, you prick. Thanks and thanks again. The epitome of this side. Greater than the sum of his own parts by willpower, attitude and desire. A fucking star. Double up with Neymar on him in your gaff, lads.
Henderson: 8
You say the earth’s flat. I say it’s curvy as fuck.
You say climate change is bollocks. I say it’s fucking roasting.
You say Henderson is shit and passes backwards. I say you have probably never played footy in your life. You say he isn’t good enough to play for Liverpool, but spend your time tweeting how boss Rabiot is and how much of a semi on you have got for The Reds being linked with him instead, eh?
I say the majority of the ground appreciates him more than he could know. You say can I have my tea.
Milner: 9
Best player on the pitch. Seriously. I was as wrong about him not being able to play centre mid for The Reds as these Henderson fuckers at the minute.
Gini: 8
Part of a midfield that was instrumental for The Reds tonight. Maybe this midfield needs to play against absolute quality to make sense. Use of the ball perfect, there.
Sadio: 9
Brighter than the brightest spark, there. Thought he was our best attacker by a mile. What a fella. Give him whatever he wants to sign a contract.
Mo Mo: 7
Not at his best, but you know what? He had about 50 fellas marking him every time he got it. Didn’t help that he forgot how to pass it for a minute, but fuck it.
Dan Sturridge: 8
Contradiction in terms, isn’t he? Is he? Hadn’t got the graft of Firmino but then scores off his only chance first half. Should score second half but, in a normal side, what more do you want?
SUBS
Firmino: 8

Comes on and I’m busy telling myself he is shite when he comes on as sub and then he does that. Bat on, lad. The best one-eyed performance since Jenny Brown got a rubber in the grid by accident in second year seniors. Her glass eye fell out, and she still got on the bus home. Well in.
The Rest: 7
I don’t know.

I'll add my 2p worth.

Becker 7 comfortable, no chance with the goals. some excellent distribution
Robertson 8 excellent performance in tying up Mbappe for most of the game, and also in attack. However also a tale of two crosses (the one he hit for Studge's goal and the one he missed for Meunier's goal).
Virgil 8 awesome - unlucky, with the tackle on Neymar, that the ball bounced straight to Mbappe
Gomez 8 He has made that slot his own. So calm & controlled for a (22 ?) yo. One poor pass into the forwards, he needs to watch that.
TAA 8 Great going forward and let's remember that in defence he was up against one of the world's best in Neymar.
Milner 9.5 What. A. Performance. The man is a well oiled machine.
Henderson 8 That is how he should play week in week out (admittedly he was given much more time and space than he'd get in the PL).
Wijnaldum 9.5 Awesome. simply awesome.
Salah 6 He got through a lot of working back / defensive work too so I don't think we should be too harsh on him even if in attack he was somewhat lacking.
Sturridge 7 That is what we require of a 'stand-in' (hopefully that does not sound too demeaning). Could and should have had a hattrick though. More games and maybe he'd be sharper.
Mane 8 A major contributor all over the pitch.

Firmino 8 Typical Bobby performance for the last 20 mins, great goal !
Shaqiri 8 Only on for 10 mins but made a match winning contribution, winning and taking the corner we scored from.

He called Spurs dirty Jewish bastards right next to my dirty Jewish bastard mate too. But you can't argue with correlation of our drinking pattern and the results at Anfield .

Certainly seems to influence games like. Best not to chance not doing it.

Our Peter is the epitome of "he's a cunt, but he's our cunt"

Alisson - 6 - Nothing he could do about the goals but nothing to do really elsewhere.
Trent - 7.5 - Looked more dangerous in possession, had more moments of trying to run it deep into the box rather than cross each time. Showed great footwork, spent most of the game without being challenged by the dangerous threat from PSG although I recall a weak tackle on the edge of the area. His positional awareness in defence is improving month on month.
Gomez - 8 - Thought he was epic, showed bursts of pace to thwart counter attacks. I think he would have caught and stopped that Neymar 1-on-1 that was called offside.
VVD - 8 - as well as his usual marshalling of the back, he had a bit of a go in attack which I'd love to see more of at corners etc. Also had a weak tackle for the equaliser but other than that we saw little of the front three.
Robbo - 8.5 - always a danger going forwards, epic cross for the first goal and he stretched PSG which had a great effect on their numbers in attack.
Hendo - 8 - lots of great forward passing and he was generally all over the pitch in his DM role.
Milner - 8 - smashing pen and some crunching tackles. Often covering for the full backs to ensure they weren't exposed.
Gini - 8.5 - I thought he was the pick of our midfielders in this one. Great move to win the pen and was a constant thorn bursting forwards.
Mane - 8 - buzzing non stop and a huge threat. Sent Neymar for chips in epic fashion.
Studge - 7.5 - got the goal but I felt he was coming deep too often leaving a lack of options in attack, or failing to press as much as others typically would. Glad he got a goal though.
Salah - 7.5 - looked threatening at times, but was also tracking back with Trent more than i've seen before. Unlucky not to get the goal and was still pretty influential given he was being so heavily marked out of the game

We won this game again due to a solid foundation at the back, complete ownership of the midfield and stretching the play up top with always one of the FBs joining the front three. I would have liked to see one of Gini or Millie filling that #8 / #10 gap behind the front three more often. But as @Oncy kept telling me during the game - this was a dominant display of possession football and we didn't have to keep going for the jugular.

Fills me with joy, that.

I get quite annoyed with all the armchair, chalkboard bellends who quack on about how tackling is a bad thing and a last resort.

FUCK OFF

Milner's tackle in the last minute against Spurs is currently my #1 tackle of the season. Followed by his tackle on Neymar. Currently in third is Joe Gomes on Moura. Surely Andy Robertson is going to make a run at top 3 before the season is out but something tells me Milner will be taking home gold, silver and bronze by the end of the season.

Gini was great again. It's nice to see him driving forward with the ball. He's an excellent ball carrier. His pace and running power is under rated. I also like how he turns on that bit of 'swag' in tight situations. It's Gini, Milner +1 for the foreseeable future. The other three will just have to rotate in for now.

I'm looking forward to this season's statement tackle from VVD. Maybe it'll be on Hazard/ Giroud, or Aguero/Sterling.. but I anticipate at some point he will go full body in one a standing tackle and fucking end someone.

Not to be a Debbie Downer again, I mean I loved the game it was a great win but I was thinking, this wouldn't be that great of a result if it was a play off game...

We played to win, not to put ourselves in a good position for a hypothetical discussion.

I'm telling you it's a sign!! We're winning the league! We've successfully cloned Digger!

A few thoughts:

  • I love when our players absolutely clatter players like Neymar or Sterling - Milner was great even if you take that crunching "welcome to England mate" tackle on Neymar.
  • PSG are an average team without Veratti ... Their goals? Lucky breaks. We're better than them and will hopefully get 7 points from the next 3 games to make the last two games 'easier'.
  • Great game from our midfield 3 ... great stuff in every facet.
  • Defense was ok too - handled a top team with relative ease.
  • Bar one bad pass, Alisson was fine again. 4 goals against him, could he have saved any of them?
  • Mane - needs to be less selfish.
  • Salah - worked harder in this one, but two terrible passes (one leading to the goal). He's not on form yet - which is great for us because when he will get there ...
  • Studge - he's never going to do what Bobby does on the pitch but he worked hard, and a goal ... what else can you ask for?
  • Bobby ... Love him ... fucking love him.
