Simeone banned for 8 matches. He's warming up for his next role as Chelsea's manager I presume.

[article]Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone has been hit with an eight-match ban by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) after being sent off in Friday's Spanish Super Cup second-leg win against Real Madrid.

Simeone was shown a red card by referee David Fernandez Borbalan for protesting that the official was taking too long to allow Juanfran Torres back onto the pitch after the Atletico right-back had received medical treatment.

The Argentine reacted by tapping fourth official Antonio Santos Pargana with his hand on the back of the head as he left the technical area. He also sarcastically applauded the referee's decision, before later watching the game from the stand right next to the dugout when the rules state this is not allowed.

Simeone has been heavily punished for his behaviour by the RFEF, who detailed the eight-match suspension in a statement released on Monday afternoon.

The breakdown of the ban sees Simeone miss two games for his angry protest, four for hitting the fourth official, one for the sarcastic clap and one for watching the second half from the stand. He has also been fined 4,805 euros while Atletico have been fined 2,800 euros.

According to Spanish radio station Cope, the Colchoneros boss will serve four games of the ban in La Liga, starting next Sunday at home to Eibar, and four more in the Spanish Super Cup.

The RFEF has chosen not to take any action against Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, although TV images show the forward appearing to hit out at Atletico's Diego Godin late in the game.

Diego Simeone was unhappy at how long Juanfran Torres had to wait before returning to the pitch following medical treatment.

Fernandez Borbalan did see the incident as he stopped play and booked Ronaldo, and that yellow card has now been deemed sufficient punishment as no mention was made of the confrontation in the disciplinary bulletin.

Simeone's eight-game ban was immediately compared to the two-game suspension handed out to Jose Mourinho when the former Madrid boss poked a finger in the eye of the then-Barcelona assistant coach Tito Vilanova during another stormy Spanish Super Cup tie three years ago.

Mourinho's ban was due to only be served in the Spanish Super Cup, but in the end he did not miss any games as he benefitted from a general amnesty declared by RFEF president Angel Maria Villar after Spain won Euro 2012.

Despite this, Atletico are unlikely to appeal the ban as Simeone himself said on Sunday that he would have to accept the disciplinary panel's judgement as he knew he had been in the wrong.

"The matter is closed," Simeone said. "It is not good to keep talking about the same thing. The people who decide will have to choose the fairest punishment. When you do wrong you must pay for it, we are waiting to see how much.

"[Assistant coach] German Burgos is capable and has my confidence, we will see the same type of football. He will be on the bench and I will watch the game from somewhere else."[/article]

Premier League review: James McCarthy is better than Jack Wilshere

[article=Telegraph] Who is better: Wilshere or McCarthy?

In keeping with a digital age in which everything is predetermined by an online poll, I propose a vote.

Which midfielder would you rather have in your team. Arsenal's Jack Wilshere or Everton's James McCarthy?

I offer this fully aware Arsenal fans will be incandescent with rage anyone has the audacity to compare the future of English football with the Republic of Ireland midfielder, but it is a worthwhile experiment to assess the honesty of the average supporter. Any Arsenal fans watching at Goodison on Saturday - or indeed any neutral not dazzled by hype or patriotic favouritism - would surely agree that based on the last 18 months it is McCarthy and Evertonians who should be insulted by the question.

The difference between McCarthy and Wilshere is the Everton midfielder, well, does stuff. He reads the game expertly, makes tackles and interceptions, passes the ball to his team mates and covers so much ground his 'heat map' must be radioactive.

Wilshere - or certainly the current version of him - does none of the above. True, he is a different type of player, selected for his creativity, but he does not score enough goals, has no turn of pace, creates nothing, often concedes possession cheaply and looks like he might be injured every time an opponent has the audacity to tackle him.

If the pair were made available for transfer today, aside perhaps from Chelsea and Manchester City with their warehouses of midfielders, McCarthy would enhance every other team in the country. Arsenal, for example, would be much superior with McCarthy sitting deep in their midfield rather than Wilshere doing nothing much at all.

If Wilshere was for sale, no-one else in the top four would be bidding. My guess is he'd be pursued by those clubs who become safe havens for those stars prematurely worshipped as a part of a new generation of English footballers until we all realised the illusion.

Currently, Wilshere puts one in mind of Joe Cole. He might have peaked at 18 and seems to be dining out on the memory of what he was - what he once represented - rather than what he actually is. If he does not radically improve soon he might as well start measuring up for that West Ham or Aston Villa jersey. Chris Bascombe[/article]

So Giroud is out potentially for 3 months with an injury.

I had hoped Arsenal would make it through the window without buying another striker and have a go at the season with just Giroud, The Underbite, and Sanogoal with Sanchez potentially filling in.

Do you think Arsene will actually buy a decent striker now? A top goalscorer will make their challenge for top 4 much more legitimate.

From the ball hitting him against the shin? That really sums up arsenal.

Did anyone watch Celtic yesterday? My goodness are they atrocious.

They look miles worse than the team that beat Barca a few years back.
