Antonio Di Natale. 36 years old. 17 league goals for Udinese last season. The Serie A's top scorer last season (Ciro Immobile) had 22.

Starts the new season with both goals in Udinese's 2 - 0 win over newly-promoted Empoli (his former club).

Rafael Benitez has revealed that Andriy Schevchenko still can't believe how he didn't score when Jerzy Dudek made that miraculous double save from him in Istanbul. The incredible stop has gone down in Anfield folklore and is widely regarded as the moment when Liverpool fans believed their name was on the Champions League trophy in 2005.

Benitez said: "I was talking to Schevchenko about this and he still can't believe it. It was a great reaction from Jerzy and it was crucial. "I think we deserved to do something more in the second half because we had the control of the game but in football things can change and Jerzy was amazing."

Reflecting on the comeback from 3-0 down to clinch their fifth European crown, Benitez admitted the Reds started to believe they could defy the odds after seeing how the Italian side were left completely stunned. He added: "We had the belief that we could do it and I think they were shocked and didn't realise what was coming. "Talking with some of them over here in Italy now, they couldn't believe it - and they couldn't react to it which was the main thing."

Andriy Shevchenko believes Mario Balotelli should be aiming for Champions League glory with Liverpool.

The former European Footballer of the Year says Balotelli can now “take back control of his destiny” after leaving AC Milan in a £16m move last week. Shevchenko says the transfer to Anfield was the right decision for all concerned and insists that Balotelli still has the potential to be among the best strikers in the world. The 24-year-old Italian made an encouraging Liverpool debut on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur with manager Brendan Rodgers labelling his performance as “excellent”.

And former AC Milan forward Shevchenko says Balotelli should be setting his sights high at Anfield. “If he was not happy and Milan weren’t either, it was right to separate,” Shevchenko is reported to have said. “But I saw Mario at the European Championships two years ago in Ukraine and Poland – he was a fantastic player and I refuse to believe that this has been lost along the way. “Balotelli deserves another chance and Liverpool will give it to him. “They are a great team, he can aspire to also win the Champions League, it’s up to him to overcome the difficulties and take back control of his destiny.”

So much for prudence. First the Darien scheme, and now this...

The former Rangers chief executive, Charles Green, has already sold the naming rights to Ibrox, according to club director Sandy Easdale. He claims Green struck a deal with the Newcastle United owner, Mike Ashley, who is listed on the Rangers plc website as owning 4.56% of shares.

In an interview with the Daily Record, Easdale would not reveal how much the deal was worth for confidentiality reasons. But the newspaper claims the deal was struck for £1 with Rangers then spending £250,000 on legal fees in a failed bid to get the contract torn up.

Easdale said: “Let’s clear this up, the Sports Direct Arena. Charles Green had already done a deal with Mike on that. Sports Direct haven’t taken it up as yet. Mike Ashley could call it the Sports Direct Arena tomorrow.”

Green revealed in an interview with STV in March 2013 that he was close to agreeing a deal with Sports Direct, but he left his role as chief executive six weeks later and no agreement was ever announced.

Ashley has been asked to back a £4m share issue that was announced last week but his ownership of Newcastle is creating a problem, and Easdale believes his extra involvement would be beneficial to the club as they bid to stave off a cash crisis.

Easdale said: “I’m pro Mike Ashley to the extent he is probably the guy who can help us at this moment in time. His plan was to increase his shareholding but he’s come across a stumbling block with the SFA. It’s up to him now to sort that out. But if he was allowed to increase his shareholding then who wouldn’t want a billionaire investing in their club?”

Easdale said he was not opposed to working with the former oldco Rangers director Dave King, who claims to be willing to invest £30m in the club under the right conditions, but claimed that the South Africa-based businessman had never made them an offer.

There was an interview with one of the supervisors on the stadium expansion construction posted on twitter this morning. A few interesting tidbits

- work due to begin on the stand July next year, finished by September or November at the very latest.
- other work on shops, facilities etc to be done from Jan 16 onwards
- club asked for designs to be 'future proof' to allow for further expansion. This would comprise a rebuilt Centenary stand to go to 68k and filling the corners of the Anfield Rd end to a maximum potential of 71k.
- although possible this further expansion is not anticipated for the foreseeable future, if ever. Feeling is that 59k will be about right
- gave the impression that a decision on the capacity is more down to the club and not the transport infrastructure, which seems less of a problem than previously thought

Tony Evans has been sharing his inside knowledge today. Reckons that people at the club are disappointed with Can 'because he strolls too much' and that they love Markovic's burst of pace 'but didn't see it much in preseason'.

Is he now completely demented or something? Or has he just been totally exhausted by the mental acrobatics required to convince himself that working for Murdoch, in the same complex where the Sun is produced, is entirely consistent with a prinicpled boycott of the paper? Either way it sounds like he's now just making stuff up completely on the hoof.

Anyone for monkey tennis?

MOTD2

At the end of last season i was asked by Mr Mark Chapman, presenter of MOTD2, at Old Trafford, in front of colleagues, if i would be interested in appearing on MOTD2 this season, and if he could have my number to pass on to his producer.

I intimated that it was a lovely offer and i would be delighted to, should my talkSPORT schedule allow as i work on Sunday, the day of transmission.

I received an e-mail, posted earlier ( sent to several respected British journalists as proof after several outlets and individuals plainly called me a liar and making the offer up ) from the producer saying MOTD2 would be delighted if i could do "some" shows, schedule willing during the 2014/15 season.

I posted this at the time, and at a time when several people decided that a post about the Falkland Islands, despite no mention of British forces, the conflict of 1982 or the nation known as Argentina, constituted heresy by virtue of merely mentioning the islands.

Amidst this disinformation, which continues with daily harassment by several internet "trolls", the BBC producer called me, in front of Mark Saggers and several colleagues at Wembley stadium, on speakerphone and intimated that complaints had been made by some members of the public ( some of whom received letters which told 2 simple facts, namely i had no contract with the BBC, and that i had not been booked to appear on MOTD2), which meant there would be an "ongoing" discussion as to whether i would be invited to appear.

Now, in truth, the BBC asked me, several times, so i asked why there was a need for an "ongoing " discussion, as it was they who asked me to appear, not the other way around.

'You are a controversial figure" came the reply.

The BBC over the years have employed, on contract or on several appearances, not "several footie appearances", the following people.

1. Jimmy Saville. A serial paedophile. Would be in prison.
2. Lesley Grantham. Convicted of manslaughter.Prison.
3. Jonny Vaughan. Convicted of selling cocaine. Prison.
4. Jeremy Clarkson. Several warnings for alleged casual racism.
5. Dan Pentaedo, Rogue Traders. Prison for council tax fraud
6. Stuart Hall. BBC 5 Live . Prison, paedophile.
7. Martyn Smith, former BBC Sport producer. Suspended sentence for child porn.
8. David Dickinson. 4 year sentence for fraud.

So one could argue that there is some degree of hypocrisy in that statement. And i reiterate i was asked to appear, not the other way round. So the relevant questions are..

1. Why ask me in the first place? I presume because i am a hard working, diligent football broadcaster?

2. Is the MOTD2 offer still there? If not, why not?

3. If my tweet about the Falklands, which did not mention the 1982 conflict, nor Argentina, nor was aimed at British servicemen or women, merely an opinion of British colonial policy in centuries gone by ( look at the EXACT wording of the Falklands tweet, you MAY NOT put words in my mouth), was offensive enough for the BBC to withdraw their offer, why does Jeremy Clarkson get several attempts at offending many Britons? Popularity? Income generator?

4. At the World Cup in Brazil, i chatted with the BBC producer of MOTD2 at Arena So Paolo, who suggested that the show , as of July ( it was the World Cup, and BBC emails used by those who suggest i will not be appearing are dated May and June, so the meeting was dated after these) was still "very interested" in using me this season, and he would be in contact.

I fully expect BBC MOTD2 to use me as a pundit this season for the "appearances, when schedules allow" that they asked me to do.

If the BBC hierarchy decided, on the basis of my Falklands tweet to revoke their offer, I have not been told, and to be frank i would not expect to be, so any newspaper reports, any trolling or spin to the contrary is simply not true.

I look forward to appearing several times on MOTD2 this season to add the insight, passion and liveliness to a great show as the producer asked me to do.

If Clarkson can work for the BBC, so can I. And i will.

Another knee surgery for Giuseppe Rossi...

http://www.espnfc.com/italian-serie...ssi-must-have-more-knee-surgeryfiorentina-say

[article]Giuseppe Rossi must have more knee surgery, Fiorentina say

Fiorentina forward Giuseppe Rossi will need further surgery on his right knee, the club confirmed on Monday.

After consultation with a specialist in London, it was confirmed that an arthroscopy would be needed "to resolve the current problems of overburdening the right knee."

Rossi underwent surgery for the second time in January, but despite returning for the final few matches of last season, he was not considered fit enough to appear at the World Cup by then Italy coach Cesare Prandelli.

During examinations of a muscular injury in preseason, a weakening of the knee that had been operated on was discovered, resulting in an enforced break.

Tests a week ago revealed an improvement, but also the necessity for more tests, amid fears more surgery would be required.

"The [surgical] intervention will be performed during this week following another consultation, requested by the player with Dr Steven Singleton, assistant to the professor Richard Steadman in Vail (Colorado)," a statement on the Serie A club's website said.

Rossi missed Fiorentina's league opener against Roma on Saturday and was left out of the latest Italy squad, although national coach Antonio Conte has said he is "counting on" the former Villarreal and Manchester United forward.

Fiorentina have given no indication of how much longer Rossi could be sidelined for.[/article]

If we could just harness the power of Stanley Collymores ego we could probably abandon fossil fuels

Mamadou Sakho was a dominant force at the back as France beat Spain 1-0 in an international friendly on Thursday night. Liverpool's No.17 played the full 90 minutes as a 73rd minute strike from Chelsea's Loic Remy gave Les Bleus the victory in Paris.

Sakho's defensive partner Dejan Lovren played the whole game as Croatia recorded a 2-0 home win over Cyprus while Divock Origi started for Belgium in their 2-0 win over Australia. Origi played for 80 minutes while Simon Mignolet was an unused substitute.

I've watched motd whilst on illegal substances a fair few times. A couple of them were very, very, similar to that video.
