Realistic Expectation

Think City can be challenged. United, depends on who they sign. Schneiderlin will strengthen their midfield considerably, but their defence is still crap. De Gea leaving will make it worse too. They also look a little short up front - if Depay isn't as good as advertised, they could struggle.

So yeah, we should definitely challenge United and City for a top 4 slot. Think Chelsea and Arsenal will take 1-2 respectively.

We haven't even got to July yet, though. City and Utd are simply bound to make several major signings.

yay or nay?
He has improved massively recently. Not so sure he is worth anything near the rumoured 20 million like. We will hate the way he tries to wind up opposition strikers but will love the fact he has never saved a penalty in his career.

I remember him, van gaal took him off for the shootout. Then in the semis he couldn't and was indeed shit.

Yeah, that's him. He had a good season for Ajax though despite the team itself having a bit of a slump. He won their player of the year award. Think he's about 26 now.

He didn't look particularly special last summer, that's for sure.

It still feels like Utd aren't quite all there when it comes to transfers. Can they really mess things up 3 years running?

It all hinges on how Sturridge Coutinho & Firmino can gel together if you ask me. Plus being able to keep Sturridge fit and if he can get back to the level he was from the season before last. We are gonna have to hope those three can step up and be match winners for us.

If we can buy another decent striker and Hendo and Milner work well together.... We revert to a back 4 and Skrtel & Sakho can forge a decent defensive partnership.... I don't see why we cant aim slightly higher than 4th.

We do actyually have quite a good squad now with options that could hopefully help us cope with Premiership and Europe.

I'm looking forward to see how last years buys kick on after a good pre season and a season under their belts.... Expect Can, Markovic and Moreno to be more consistent this coming season.

For the Europa League we should pack the team with as many kids as we can get away with. Bogdan in goal, a settled reserve back four, build the midfield around Rossiter if he's fit again, use Lambert for a bit of experience if he's still hanging around and give the likes of Kent some minutes. I couldn't care less how quickly we go out - I just want absolutely zero excuses about the travel and the Thursday/Sunday fatigue syndrome.

Totally. EL team:

Bogdan

Wisdom
Gomez
Ilori
Maguire

Rossiter
Chrivella

Brannagan
Ojo
Kent

Origi

Great stuff. Do you know if there's any kind of under-21 version of the competition, like there is for Champions League, Peter? I didn't think there is, and can't see anything from a quick google. It would be great to let that kind of team do some travelling, play some big stadia etc, even if they do go out pronto. Better to get them a bit of experience while the first team rests rather than start another saga of fatigue excuses.

You just know the Rodger haters will absolutely lambast him if he loses in Europe. It'll just be another stick to hit him with. I'd say use Europa as a competition to gain experience. Let's face it, who in the squad has the experience?

Edit: other than Milner.

FSG have surely said to him 'Get back into the top four, or else'. He's got to focus like he's never done before, and I just don't think it's worth the hassle trying to go far in that horrible competition. Spurs have done fairly well in it for the past couple of years and who cares? Everton did okay in it last season at the cost of all momentum in the league. We need to treat it with the contempt it deserves.

Very true but our form in the CL last season was not only diabolical, it was embarrassing. I just don't think we should throw the chance away, we should use it to gain experience in playing European teams. Not at the expense of missing out on top 4 but to gain something for our first team players. No point in getting top 4 again and playing so poor against European teams.

We've got a group of young players that are still learning and developing, a group who are still acclimatizing to the club and trying to prove themselves and then another 5-6 new players to integrate into the first team squad. On top of that one of our key players is leaving and another can't stay fit to save his life.

Unless we get someone who puts in a Torres esque first season where he can do no wrong and drags the team to 4th, I don't see it happening. We've got works in progress on all fronts.

So long as it's clearly work in progress rather than regress I won't despair, but that needs to be clear pretty early on.

Realistically we are looking at 5th/6th

But who knows if things go our way we could finish 2nd again.

We have a nightmare start so if we are in the mix at all by xmas we will have a very big chance to gate crash the top table.

My realistic expectation is for Rodgers to whinge about the tough start and by the middle of October when we've had our arses handed to us a few times that he'll start mentioning this being a transition season what with all the new signings and he never gets to do any coaching what with all the Europa League games.
Maybe that's a little pessimistic but I've seen very little so far this post season to get excited about.
