So their entertaining stab at the best 100 footballers in the world is up to number 40.

"Highlights" so far - ie players I've heard of or think are interesting:

100 - Ousmane Dembele (Dortmund)
97 - Cazorla
96 - Totti
94 - Lacazette
93 - Fernadinho
92 - Courtois
90 - Dele Alli
89 - Robben
88 - Raheem Sterling
87 - James Rodriguez
86 - Mata
85 - Gundogan
81 - Claudia Bravo (yes really)
79 - Nani
78 - Dani Alves
76- FIRMINHO
73 - Aaron Ramsey
72 - Kasper Schmeichel
71 - Alvaro Morata
69 - SADIO MANE
68 - Koscielny
66 - Chiellini
65 - Mohamed Salah
63 - Douglas Costa
62 - Mascherano
58 - Aldeweireld
57 - Mkhitaryan
56 - Lahm
51 - Hummels
50 - Benzema
49 - Icardi
48 - Marcelo
47 - Cavani
46 - Diego Costa
44 - Silva
43 - Di Maria
41 - Koke

Any guesses who else will appear for us. Coutinho and Lallana maybe - Matip?? Mind you if Bravo is in that list (and a better keeper than Courtois apparently) then both of our supposed stoppers should be!

I always find the premise for these lists hard to fathom even though they are also mildly interesting I guess.

I mean are they based on potential, class, form, transfer fee or what? It all seems a bit blurry to me.

I.e. Renato Sanchez in at 54 is perhaps not completely weird seeing as Bayern splashed the cash for him, and he had some very decent games for the crowned European Champions during Summer, but other than that he hardly plays does he and has only done so very sparsely at highest level? I mean, so that's potential, right, probably based on his massive fee?
Angel di Maria and Cavani sitting high must be based on previous years performances I take it, as they've both been very ordinary for a longer spell from what I've seen. Bravo is a bold pick, I know he's highly rated in other parts of the world and have just won the Copa America but he's had a very poor half a year in England to say the least. Etc. Etc.

Anyways.. number one, has got to be Dolberg. Surely.

PS Don't think Lallana will pip those already mentioned in that list but I very much reckon Coutinho to feature in the last 40.

It's voting by a panel that they have listed. 40 pts for 1st place down to 1 point for 40th each. So some people voted for all the weird ones!

You probably have to know about Football.

You never know. BBC Sport has just invited people to contact them to give their opinion about the verdict on George North's head injuries

Like the opinion of anyone who isn't a neurologist has any fucking value whatsoever

I tend to like the Guardian's football coverage: I enjoy reading stuff from a number of their writers and listen to the Football Weekly podcast, but this just smacks of 'content'; what can we fill the paper/website with towards the end of the year when everyone is doing lists; best albums of 2016, most entertaining celebrity deaths of 2016. You could argue there's some merit in ranking the films of the year but this list seems eminently pointless.

What they should have done is generate this list with their 100 odd pundits, and then rank it against a list compiled by a piece of moneyball-type software that ranks players solely on statistics and then compare the two. I'd read that.

The Mighty Quinton Fortune is on their panel of experts.

Was one of my favorite players ... Post Apartheid, him and Benni McCarthy will gave the nation hope that they could develop into a proper footy nation. Granted, Benni had a pretty decent career but both never fulfilled their potential and South Africa is kak at football.
