Sakho suspended by Liverpool

I also find the notion that he failed a drugs test for taking something that isn't on the banned list to be a bit fanciful.

If its not banned they wouldn't test for it.

Best case scenario is he was taking something that he could/ should have gotten a TUE for.

Dunno, if it was a stimulant and he was taking non-prescription fat burners from GNC or whatever fitness chains or from the Internet it's quite possible it contained something on the banned list. I remember a big fuss when NHL players joined the Olympics in 1998 because of the widespread use of pseudoephrine nasal decongestant pills in hockey for their stimulant effect.

I'm not sure what EUFA's stance is, whether intent matters when determining guilt and/or punishment or if presence of the substance is sufficient regardless of the circumstances.

My understanding is that it's relatively tough to get a TUE. Certainly "I want my abs to pop" isn't going to get it done.

Since 2009, at least six athletes have been caught taking the drug—most recently Red Sox pitching prospect Michael Kopech.

Hmmm......

What is TUE?

Powell and Simpson first got banned for 18 months but CAS changed it to 12 months.

So.... "It was just a fat burn supplement; the fact that it contains the same juice several world class 100m athletes have jacked up on and been banned for is just coincidence" being one, errrrrm, 'defence'?
If you Google 'oxilofrine fat burner' you'll see its actually a fairly reasonable explanation (or at least a decent excuse to reduce any potential sanction).

Tyson Gay and Asafa Powell, the two fastest sprinters in the world this year, have both tested positive for the banned amphetamine oxilofrine. Both have insisted they are not cheats. Here's our guide to the banned substance.

What is oxilofrine?
Oxilofrine is a stimulant of the amphetamine class that was developed to treat hypotension (low blood pressure) in people who do not respond to conventional treatment. Oxilofrine is the prescription name for methylsynephrine, hydroxyephrine and oxyephrine. It is not widely used in the UK and is not a licensed drug in the US. Some firms use oxilofrine, in the form of synephrine, in so-called sports nutritional supplements as it is thought to allow people to burn fat faster and lose weight. Synephrine is a natural component of Citrus aurantium, otherwise known as bitter orange, but it can also be synthesised or extracted from plant sources.

What are its effects?
Oxilofrine is thought to increase adrenaline production, boosting endurance, focus, alertness and heart rate and increasing oxygenation of the blood.

Is it dangerous?
Long-term abuse of a drug such as oxilofrine could put result in tachycardias (very high heart rate), cardiac dysrhythmia (irregular heartbeat) and haemorrhagic stroke. It could also cause hypertension (high blood pressure) if taken by people with normal blood pressure.

How do you take it?
If not supplied on prescription, oxilofrine (methylsynephrine) would most commonly be taken as a sports nutrition supplement, mixed with other supplements, in liquid capsule form.

Why is it banned?
It is considered a performance enhancing drug, and is on the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of banned substances.

What does Wada say?
Oxilofrine is found in its anti-doping code in"stimulants: section S6" in section "b: specified stimulants". Wada states: "A specified substance is a substance which allows, under defined conditions, for a greater reduction of a two-year sanction when an athlete tests positive for that particular substance."

It goes on to say: "Specified substances are not necessarily less serious agents for the purpose of doping than other prohibited substances, and nor do they relieve athletes of the strict liability rule that makes them responsible for all substances that enter his or her body.

However, there is a greater likelihood that these substances could be susceptible to a credible non-doping explanation."

So it's basically synephrine which I've taken in dozens of products. Meh. Bothered.

Other than the fact he faces a ban, this is a nothing story. The rules are stupid. But he probably broke them out of ignorance and will pay the price.

The story coming out in the papers now is that Rodgers dropped Sakho at the start of the season for being overweight. He was told he'd be out until he lost a certain amount. That's when he first got into this stuff.

Interesting. See what happens I guess. I don't get in an ethical huff about this stuff but he is an expensive asset that may be unavailable to us for a while.

Sounds like a pathetic reason. The dickhead should have just trained 1 hour extra everyday.

It is believed Rodgers dropped Sakho against Stoke City and Bournemouth at the start of the season for being overweight. (Andy Hunter)

Sakho has had struggles with his weight at LFC & lost his place at the start of season under Rodgers because of his condition. (Dom King)

Sakho was out of shape when he reported back for pre-season with concerns raised by staff about his diet & lifestyle. (James Pearce)

When the club starts briefing the press like this, I think it is over for Sakho at LFC.

FSG did the same for some of the players and manager at Red Sox whom they wanted out of the club.

If they want to get rid of him over this then so be it. But where is the path to any reasonable sale? He is worthless to anyone for a year, maybe 18 months.

Lucas just tackled me.

FSG paid 18m for Sakho. If they want him out, going about it this way is very quickly taking millions off his transfer value. Which is why it isn't really comparable to what they may or may not have done in baseball.

How out of shape must he have been to lose his place to Kolo Toure?

China doesn't give a shit about UEFA right? Maybe we can salvage a sale by sending him there, I love the guy and would hate to see him go, but anything over a year out puts his career in jeopardy

Regardless it could mean the end of his Liverpool career even if its a 4-6 month ban.

Do we not have nutritionists or dieticians at the club?
As a multi -million pound business in his own right he should have been much more careful about anything he takes.

Players are at the club loads and are fed by the club right? just tell the greedy git no seconds.

We do.
But they probably still think pasta is a good healthy meal for athletes.

Sakho has no excuses here and the club are clearly hanging him out to dry with their briefings to the media.

The club knew about this on Friday. Klopp exploded with anger. Ayre, mindful of the post-Suarez shambles, warned everyone not to discuss it with anyone outside until at least after the results of the B sample test, when a response will be thrashed out. So hacks tried their other contacts, and one called Rodgers, who simply explained the pre-season issues. I dare say Pearce has talked to lots of people but he's not being 'briefed' in any formal sense by the club on this. Not everything the Echo reports comes from the club - as Pearce's obvious lack of inside knowledge showed leading up to Rodgers' sacking.
