Looks like the Mancs will get one of the top DMs in England for 24 million.

This guys is brilliant - exactly the player a team needs to protect the back 4, and talented enough to also be an active part when the team attacks.

Are we going to sign a DM? Is having one key to success this year? Or can Milner/Henderson/Can/Lucas/Allen do the necessary?
 
I'm gutted, he'd have been perfect for us, as most of the board has been saying for two years.
 
Rodgers doesn't believe in having a DM.

Which would be all well & good, if he could make the defence perform without one, which he can't seem to do.
 
He'd be a great signing for us, but it'd be a little embarrassing buying another of their players. As mentioned though, I don't think he's a Rodgers sort of player, not that he's not good, but he's a proper DM. Saying that, I didn't think Benteke would be a Rodgers sort of player, and he's obviously interested....
 
Meh.
They need a whole new defence really.
I'll be worried when they get that though.
 
Its quite amazing we've given something like 60m to Southampton and haven't signed him.

We'd have been better off just signing him for what we paid for Lovren, Lallana and Lambert
 
Yep, this was the player we should have signed last season. As Ross says 60 mill and not him.
 
A suspicious club, Southampton, politically. They've packed their academy not only with good young players but also ones from very, very nice posh families. They pioneered scouting public schools. Now they're sending their players out to other clubs, thus driving the creeping embourgeoisification of English football. I blame that ex-chairman called Rupert. It won't be long, thanks to them, before some players come out to play with top hats, clove carnations and spats.

I don't think he'll replace Carrick, Wizzy. I think he'll play alongside him, doing a job they don't really have anyone doing at the moment, and unfortunately I share your and Mish's view that this could potentially do them a lot of good. In fact I'd have loved to see him come to us, but (regrettably) I doubt he was ever on our radar.
 
Ridiculous we didn't sign him instead of Lallana, given we already had Coutinho.

Whilst he would have still been a good signing for us this season, where would he play. I assume Can will be moving into midfield along with Henderson and Milner, so would have been superfluous for us.
 
Disagree with all of that, I'm afraid. Coutinho's certainly a gem but we need options for every position. As for Schneiderlin himself, he'd have helped considerably by protecting our back four a fair bit better than Can, Milner or Henderson, all of whom are essentially attacking players. Unless our defence functions a heck of a lot better than it did last season, Rodgers is taking a real risk by neglecting that side of a good midfield set-up IMO.

Both were young and took time to settle. In fact Rednknapp was going to sell his lefback, Gareth Bale at one stage, wasn't he? We bought seasoned professionals who have at best been average but mostly disappointing, though still think there is hope for Lallana.
 
Koeman is probably going to buy Jordy Clasie as the Schneiderlin replacement. He is about the only DM I could see Brendan going for.

I'd be intrigued to see how clasie gets on. He's potentially a very good player
 
Okay so between utd and ourselves we will have signed Lambert, Lallana, Lovren, Shaw and then Clyne and Schneiderlin.

Why are we so determined to dismantle the premier league 6/7th best side?

If these 6 players were actually any good then I'd imagine Southampton would have achieved slightly more over the past 2 years.
