Signings Rogers got right...

Not open for further replies.
I'm still utterly baffled why people can't spell his name right.
(You're not on your own either)

He talks some crap alright. It's a lack of coaching time. He had plenty of time last season.
I think he needs to reassess bringing someone in to help the team score goals again.

Not supporting BR on this issue, and I'm stating the obvious, but TBF none of Lovren, Moreno and Manquillo were here last season !

Thompson said in his book that they tried to sign him but were beaten to it.

Stage one:

"I returned back [from scouting him] the following day impressed with what I had seen and mentioned it to Gerard. He said: 'I will ask Rick.'

Stage two:

Ten days later I was sitting in a lounge at Anfield having some lunch and looking at the big TV screen. Up came the news United had signed Ronaldo from Lisbon for £12.2m. Gerard and myself nearly choked on our food.

The blert, as usual, was Parry.

Rafa and Houllier made some utter shite signings aswell, let's not pretend it's exclusive to Rodgers. The key is buying "that" player at the right time, recognising someone that can be a catalyst to getting everyone working back in tandem. In fact, Rafa took years to replace the only truly "class" striker we had when he arrived (Owen, whom he never even got the chance to work with). Kenny lost Torres, Rodgers has lost Suarez. We've looked pretty inept at any other time over the last decade or so when we haven't have one of them. Temporarily Rodgers has lost two players of that caliber, it'll take time to get back on our feet, but we still have a very strong squad. We all know his deficiencies that he needs to sort out, but he deserves the time to sort it. He hasn't come in with 5yr plans and all that shit, he's come in, turned us round and had us challenging in our second season.

It's amazing when you're winning, people class some fringe players as full of promise, etc. As soon as the results go against you, the fringe players are failures, big name players have carried you, the manager's "got lucky", whatever.

I'd say Rafa and Houllier were probably 50/50 with the signings, or not far from it.

Brodge has got about 2 or 3 right out of 25.

I know you're exaggerating with the 2 or 3, but that bad?

On the whole I feel that we're signing a better class of player these days. The problem is we don't quite know whether we've quite got it right yet because so many are young.

Alberto Moreno jury out £12,000,000 * 16 August 2014
Mario Balotelli Horribly wrong £16,000,000 25 August 2014

Being a pedant here, but that's 10 out of 25 wrong (some are open to debate), the jury is still out on some players who've performed well and we know have alot more in them - Manquillo, Moreno, Lallana. It's too early to say with the likes of Lovren and Markovic. I've heard you (Ryan) big up Lovren, Lallana, Borini and even Alberto (to a lesser degree) at some point. It's far too early to say with many of them. I think the most obvious failures are Aspas, the three loanees - Cissokho, Moses and Şahin, and of course Balotelli (who has yet to play alongside Sturridge). There's too many ifs and buts to decided either way.

His record is sketchy yeah, but there are alot of young players in there with time on their side.

This is Rafa's list:

I know what you mean in a way. Sturridge aside, there isn't really anyone that at this point in time you can say was a home run without any arguments.

Rodgers has spent a lot of money but a lot of it has gone on young potential: Coutinho, Alberto, Moreno, Manquillo, Can, Origi, Markovic (I've left out Illori because we more or less know that wasn't really his buy). For the most part we probably won't be able to judge that lot for at least another 6 months or so.

More worryingly it's the players that he's bought for the here and now that have gone wrong. Lovren has thus far looked to be a disaster (though it is early days), Sakho he doesn't seem to like, Ming doesn't look up to the job and 40M on Lallana and Allen is increasingly looking like luxury we couldn't really afford. And then there is Balotelli.

I counted 18 good signings from 59 for Rafa. Thats fucking shocking.

14 from 40 for Houllier.

I'd say Rodgers isnt any worse then either of them. At least when you consider the talent we've bought now that we cant judge for a while as Keni says.

The depressing thing is that we've pissed away so much money on very average players.

If we are looking only at defenders and defensive midfielders.....Rafa's succes rate is quite high....he brought in some great players at ridiculously low value.
Xabi
Masher
pepe
Agger
Skittles
Arbeloa
Paletta wasnt good for us...but he is great elsewhere now.
Even Sissoko had his moments

He was in for Vidic and Alves as well....

Oh yeah....he knew how to recruit in that part of the pitch alright.

He also bought Johnson, Kromkamp, Degen, Dossena, Pellegrino, Josemi etc.

The difference is really that FSG buy young and can resell at a decent price, if it's a flop.

I buy stuff in my day to day life and find out later that a lot of it I either didn't need or want or was useless anyway even if her indoors says it was a bargain (whatever one of those is) so I reckon Brendan's hitting about the same level. Half ok, half shite.

Live with it, it's football transfers! and anyway most of the time most of the posters on here give the thumbs up to the transfer initially.

Feckin' wannabe Managers...

Unbelievable, parry was such a do nothing.

Paradoxically it was because he tried to make himself indispensable by having a finger in every pie. He wasn't lazy - quite the opposite in fact - but when he came to LFC he came into an environment which didn't suit him, and spent lots of time and effort achieving sod all.

He also bought Johnson, Kromkamp, Degen, Dossena, Pellegrino, Josemi etc.

Josemi, Pelle, Aurelio, Degen were free....Johnson was hardly a dud. Yes we overpaid ....but it was a deal forced on is by Portsmouths financial situation.

With Rafa...you get yhe feeling if he was given 100 million to get the defense right, he would get it spot on.

Josemi cost 2 mill. Degen played a few games and had a sign on fee and 40k a week.
I'm not so sure about that. Tactically he'd set us up right. Buying the right players? 18 from 59 suggests otherwise.

Si Senor, that's what the kids call him. Can you handle that abbreviation. Or will we add it to your list of volcanic triggers....

you know we had him in our palm...

I will never accept anyone being called CR7, Arod, RPatz, Glenjo, Brangelina or any other wank acronym or nickname. They are, to me, the height of shitness and symptomatic of us failing 'the kids' by not giving them a fucking good, hard cuff around the ear for starting this bullshit up in the first place. You can also add every young guy walking around with his underpants on show. No one wants to see your fucking kecks you little cunt.

I'm in stiches here. (PS that term was frowned by parents in 1923).

I think CR7 is actually a good moniker. Makes me feel like he's a Star Wars character.

It's fucking inane. I hate it. I hate it more that some cunts actually use it.

I hate shit signings whether they are free or cost 1 million or 15 million.

The problem with shit signings is that we dont look at the opportunity cost. For example, a common argument used to defend Rafa against the Keane transfer is that we got back 75% of the transfer fee from Spurs. So it is not as bad as it was made out to be. No the true cost of the Keane transfer was number 19. A quality 20 million attacker would have potentially won us the title that season.

It amazes me whenever I listen to interviews with Rafa, Rodgers, Houllier - they are all about the system, how they spend countless hours studying weakness in other teams, prepare DVDs, individualized instructions for players to deal with threats, tweak the system, blah blah, all complicated stuff. And impressive too, I may add. And then they go out and spend 15-20 million on strikers who patently do not fit their system and pretty much obvious from day one. It is something I will never understand. I know it is not an exact science but we can do better on the transfer front.
