He's been shite since his return. Whats going on?

I think he's suffering from not having a workhorse like Suarez next to him, harrying and making space

Makes the balo signing even more absurd.

How should we line up the rest of the season?

He was great today. Summeronions gave him man of the match

Good Finish but most of the time he just wants too many touches.Must be infuriating for the other players. It does my head in when he shouts and shouts to be given the ball only to pass it right back to whoever give it to him and then saunter off.

We'd have won today if we had the same line up we had against City ...

Maybe but Allen was as poor today as he was good against City, especially in the first half.

Sterling up front does bring the best out of Coutinho though.

I don't know whether he's afraid to get injured again or whether it's downright laziness but it needs sorting quickly.
You just can't have a static forward in this system.
Borini could have done a better job today.

Having said that, great lay off by Sturridge for Lallana from which we should have score. That was a shocking miss.

I think Lallana needs to go to the bench before Sturridge does. Sturridge plays better with a partner. It was the same at the start of the season before he got injured.

He was one of our best players today. Shite thread. All the usual suspects coming out for a snipe at Studge. Set up a few clear chances and scored a great goal. Ran his arse off.
He set up the Lallana chance and scored, I'll agree with that.

Cannot agree that he ran his arse off though

Was non existent for the rest of the game and routinely didn't move for the ball

He took his goal well but his lack of movement, and effort, for much of the game was horrible. He stood and watched whenever the ball went back to their keeper, he failed to close down players, he sometimes didn't even start running until the ball had gone past him. I don't know what's up with him but he's in an awful state of mind.

He's a brilliant player but I don't think he works hard enough. I feel like he worked a lot harder off the ball last year.

Well it is hard to argue that he scored and put one on a plate for Lallana but he just doesn't look the same player.
I'm not overly worried yet as his sharpness still isn't where it needs to be but he does need to work harder at bringing others into the game.

Part of the brilliance of Rush was that, even when service to him was stifled, he hassled defenders so much they'd either make an error and let him in on goal, or they'd push up too quickly and our midfield would then get the ball back in to him. It was a classic display of how a centre forward doesn't have to just stand about looking miserable when few passes get though. Today he was a powder puff of a presence up there. The defenders must have loved the way he just left them to get on with it.

This. There are about 5-6 other players you could start a thread about but not him. He was good today.

If we had anyone else following up on him we'd have scored more. I gave him MOM cos he was the only one who could score

I thought he was poor today - apart from the goal, but I was busy chucking people out for parts of he game.

Sturridges running/ workrate improved when we went down to10 men. Therein lies the problem.

He really doesn't work hard enough, but whatever, we've got bigger issues.

Is this also the default 'I fucking can't stand Balotelli' thread? If so, I'm in.

Nah, you can start that one yourself

United fans I hope.

1. Liverpool fan - Irish - hammered - couldn't stand without looking like he was on the deck of a ship in very stormy water (also from the South).
2. Liverpool fan - Aussie - known repeat offender, gets upset and wants to fight everyone when things go wrong - last kicked out for trying to start a fight with a Liverpool fan who shouted "Lucas... you're shite".
3. Liverpool fan - banging his hand on the bar using it as a drum - told once by bar staff "stop", told twice by security "stop", third time he gets to enjoy the cool night air.
4. Man Utd fan who's face may have come in contact with Liverpool fans fist.
5 Liverpool fan who's fist may have come in contact with Man Utd fans face.

I hate Manc games - full house of 300, and there'll always be a couple of Mancs who get in and everybody if wound far too tightly.

.... and this is in Melbourne.... It's nuts.

He doesn't have the work rate or desire to create chances for himself to be a lone striker. Yes he scored a good goal and should have had an assist for Lallana but I rarely see his runs and think he is doing so with enough purpose.

I also think Sterling has started playing pretty poorly since he has been removed from the striking position, its almost like he's forgetting the pass and move type of play he was doing last year in the centre and got too much in the mind set of running in behind. Both were off form yesterday.

I have my doubts as to whether Sterling and Sturridge are suited to this formation. Sterling isn't a wing back, isn't a striker, and I think we're more effective with Coutinho type players in the attacking midfield positions (in the 2 of the 3-4-2-1) as they can hold onto the ball better. Sturridge, as lots have said, lacks the work-rate or the constant pressing (or the physicality, I suspect) for the lone striker role.

Well I know it doesn't mean that much these days but in Sterling's last season as a reserve he had a phenomenal game as a right wing back. His energy, discipline, stamina and positivity were really extraordinary to behold. So although many things have changed since then, I think he's certainly got it in him to dazzle in the odd game in that role, and he's certainly got it in him to do a hell of a lot better in his other roles. He looks mentally jaded at the moment.

Sturridge also can play way better as a lone striker. Look at some recordings of when he did so last season - so much more energy, imagination, strength, fight and incisiveness. He's not always been this indolent. This is him with a problem and maybe he needs extra sessions with Steve Peters but he's come back from injury really in the wrong frame of mind.

So I don't think we should treat the current concerns as beyond resolution. These players are much better than they seem at present.

Sterling is clearly affected by the whole contract stand off.
He did play well at right wing back a few times but he's wasted there.

We started the the 2nd half vs the Mancs with him and Sturridge upfront. At least it looked like it before Stevie got sent off.

Move him behind Sturridge together with Coutinho. Hopefully Ibe is back vs Arsenal.
And Markovic should start on the left.

Sturridge is still getting back to fitness. Scored a goal and set up Lallana.
He isnt our biggest problem, at all.

No one said he's been our biggest problem

Other people have had threads, I thought I'd start one at Sturridge Who is ridiculously off pace with the team. Since he's come back he's not looked like half the player he was last year

Why?
