Let's talk about how will our team be affected by our lack of European football this year. Should our transfer strategy be different, now that we will have far fewer games and can only qualify for Europe by virtue of league position (or a domestic Cup win)?

As we know from 2013-14 and Leicester's season, lack of European distractions is a tangible advantage in the league. This is the only way a team that has quality, but no great depth, can hope to do well in the competition. The disadvantage of this is that you cannot experiment much or give playing time to squad or young players – everything becomes simplified, the best 11 always plays in the league. I'm sure Klopp will be desperate to win a cup next season as well to erase the "loser" tag, so I expect strong teams there as well.

With this in mind, we definitely need to think in terms of getting the maximum quality, rather than quantity and depth in the transfer market. This is bad news for young players, returning loanees etc – now someone like Markovic or Alberto would only get a chance to impress in a few cup games at best, so unless Klopp rates them already it's better for them to ask to be sold. This is also bad news for Benteke, Allen and other players who were not regular starters this season, because the squad will now need to be seriously trimmed to allow for a few new players and for a couple of younger player Klopp really rates.

A big thing to remember also chavski have no Europe competition either so they are in the same boat. Also I think the players klopp wanted won't change but let's wait and see as most players will come as he will sell his vision for the club

I don't think that we should change any plans now that Champions League is gone for 2016/17. It may have an effect on whether some players do or don't sign, but there are several factors that fall much more in our favour than say the summer before our last title tilt (13/14).
  • Klopp - we shouldn't underestimate the effect of his record so far, his reputation as a man manager or his passion for the job. He is a much bigger draw than Rodgers was.
  • Two final losses - we reached a total of 0 finals in 12/13 and played some pretty turgid football at times. Klopp has shown that he can get results with this team, there is a convincing argument there that he could better those results by building on the current foundation.
  • Playing style - he is cultivating a style that is exciting to watch and appears exciting to play in.
  • TV money - this summer more than ever it is essential that we kick on and get the recruitment right. We are in the same position as every other team that finished 5-10th in the league - spending to try and better this year's position. A pull back in policy at this stage could be devastating and see us out of the top four for a number of years.
If we want Champions League, sign Champions League quality players.
 
I would be. He's a major talent, we know he suits us, we'd have a job replacing him for less than silly money and we'll already be renewing a fair few other positions. Every player has his price, but there are some I would deffo prefer not to see leaving and Coutinho's one of them.

I would be. He's a major talent, we know he suits us, we'd have a job replacing him for less than silly money and we'll already be renewing a fair few other positions. Every player has his price, but there are some I would deffo prefer not to see leaving and Coutinho's one of them.

He's had a decent season based on stats alone (12 goals, 7 assists). But by my eye, his form is still very patchy and he's had quite a few games where he has been a passenger. I guess a sale would come down to whether his consistency will improve or not from this point on given he is already 23 years old.

For the record, I wouldn't advocate selling him either at this stage but it is clear that - as naturally talented as he is - Coutinho still has some work to do before he can be considered a genuinely top talent. I know Liverpool are strongly linked so he's flavour of the month right now, but comparing Coutinho's career stats with Goetze is worthwhile given they are similar positions and similar ages and going for similarly projected prices.

It would need a big offer for me to consider letting him go - probably 40-50 mill.
 
I wouldn't sell Sturridge either - anyone who can score the kind of goal he scored on Wednesday is a special player. But Klopp will need to figure out how to use him better in games against strong opponents, because one thing he is incapable of doing is holding up the ball under pressure. I think he would need to play at #10 or on the wing in some games.

Agree. He was awful on Wednesday and still goes missing too often (though frequently redeems a poor performance with a screamer goal out of nowhere) but it would be ridiculous to sell him for anything less than 40m+ in today's market.
 
Fwiw Matip was in Whoscoreds Bundesliga team of the year.
Think he'll prove to be a great signing.
 
I agree that we'll need to slim down the squad significantly, however it's probably worth bearing in mind that we'll (hopefully) be in Europe the following season so in some cases a loan might be a better option.
 
I'm yet to write Markovic off. I was opposed to the loan and he deserves a chance under Klopp.

Benteke's just unsuited to our game and should probably be sold, but I wish we had at least tried to make it work. There is logic in keeping him if we sign the wingers Klopp has hinted he wants and appears to be after. If the right offer comes in then fair enough, but I wouldn't be disappointed if he were come September.

Moreno's a lost cause for me now. Too many mistakes. Sell.

Ballotelli - I'd flog him for a quaver.

Rest of the loanee's can be sold.
 
Trim the squad and add just a few top signings rather than spending the same amount on twice as many goodish players. We have a much lighter schedule without Europe now so id rather see a few quality signings come in rather than another bloody squad rebuild. If we get Europe the season after which I'm sure we will, then add some depth and back up.

"Probably"? We spent £25m on Lallana,£20m on Downing, £28m on Firmino and £20m on Matrkovic.

Clearly using our transfer activity as a benchmark isn't the best place to start, but I think we'd be expecting more than £20m for Coutinho, who is better than all of the above players by a fucking mile.
