Tonight demonstrated yet again that this season is all about kicking us in the nuts so now that we've got players coming back from injury and we've had a reasonably good look at the youngsters, it's time to take a mid to long term approach and look to next season.

Do we still go all out to finish as high as possible in the league? Do we prioritize the Europa League as it gives us a glimmer of the CL and some silverware?

How do we line-up to maximize our chances of building a decent team for next season?

Focus on the cups, we'll probably make Europa anyhow, but trying to win some silverware is a must, winning a cup, even the Carling Cup, would give us a massive boost.

Sturridge, while painfully slow and lacking any sort of explosiveness (a given with his fitness levels, of course), still scared the pants off their defenders every time he had the ball at his feet. More of that, please, plus Firmino and Coutinho should lead to some fun games to watch.

Coutinho Sturridge Firmino will be boss.
I'd give Smith a run in the league aswell.

We'll get a few weekends off now due to going out, and that feels just fine.

I think we should all hibernate. Not enough good players to make experimentation that fun to watch. I don't want Klopp to be given false hope. I want him determined to rip this squad up. I just don't want to watch it.

It's about trying to solve our defensive problems, and get some cohesiveness going forward. And winning the league cup.

I don't care too much where we finish in the league, as long as we show some signs of consistency. We should definitely be giving the likes of Stewart a few starts in the league too.

All of you new Stewart fans should ponder why you've not heard of him before now. Yes, he has ability, but look at his age. He's been sleepwalking through his career so far. If he really has turned a corner now then great, but I'd urge a bit of caution.

Hipster.

I was of a similar mindset until I watched Coutinho and Sturridge tonight. Those two are game changers. Sturridge in particular.

We may not learn that much new but it could be fun watching Coutinho, Sturridge and Firmino linking up after a dull and miserable season. And it will be useful to see how much more there is to Firmino playing with better players.

Aside from the headliners mentioned above, I'd like to see some of the younger / less experienced players get a chance.

In the main, I'd prioritize Origi over Ibe and Lallana because he looks really eager and ready to step up. Hopefully we'll have a more settled side next season for him to develop in.

Tex deserves some game time, if only to boost his fee (has he got any time left on his contract?). It doesn't look like he's got a future here but I think he'll link up well the others and the guy clearly wants to make an impression - he worked his nuts off tonight and we could do with a bit more of that.

I'd like to see a little more of Pedro. He gave the ball away cheaply a few times but there were some interesting moments of class tonight and it'd be good to see some cameos from him going forward.

I can't see us doing well in Europe with our defence so we'll likely drop out of that but we may as well give it our best shot while we can given the state of us in the league.

It's not like anyone thinks he should be captain macca but why not give the lad a chance to impress or fail. We haven't much to lose in the league anyway so give him a few games and see how he does.
Our midfield is so slow and passive at times that seeing someone with tenacity and desire is a breath of fresh air.
If he fails then he can't fail worse than the overpriced and overpaid experienced players in front of him.

Nope; contract runs out in the summer. In discussions over a new deal but I think he's looking for assurances of playing time before committing to a new deal which is fair enough. So if he doesn't stay, he'll leave for a fee determined by tribunal in the year 2038 I suppose (if the speed of Ings' case is any indicator).

Want to see more of Pedro, played an excellent game. One touch football. You don't need to be big and strong if you have quick feets, excellent touch and good reading the game.

I also want to see Lucas play as a central defender more often. He is our defensive leader and can organise the defense. That is something Skrtel, Sakho, Lovren can't do.

I quite agree but some of his new fans on here are a bit much with their instant conviction that he's going to be great. A bit like the 'oh my god we've signed Caulker???'/'Caulker MUST play!!!' buffoons.

Sometimes it easier to trust the unknown when you certainly don't trust the players who get picked week in week out.
We're down with the dead men in the league so I think it may be worth trying. It would also help encourage other young players who we are trying to procure and be a kick up the arse to the established players.

Yeah, but he's been the most impressive of the reserves, so deserves a shot. Some players thrive at a higher level, its possible that he will, and given how our season is going, it's a good time to find out.

Tell the players, they have nothing to play for anymore. Then we'll see the most magical display of football ever.

Is it a characteristic of Liverpool fans or of all premier league fans that we want every player in the team to be skillful and artistic?
A lot of very good teams down the years have had players that were important to the team yet didn't add goals or assists.
The watercarriers if you agree with the Cantona quote about Deschamps.
Plenty of players don't get the glory or acclaim that the more noticable players do. They are usually called a players player and get more respect within the game than from fans or the media.
Milner got this tag when a Man City player but has struggled to contribute as much for us as he hasn't had the same quality of player around him and looks ponderous at times.
Do we need some more workhorses in the team to compensate for the flair and less noticable physicality of other players?

Incidentally this is why everyone loved Suarez as he combined both attributres of skill and hard work/will to win.

A team with Henderson Lucas Milner Allen Can as its midfield options can not really be accused of lacking workhorses. We could use a few thoroughbreds.

It would seem he was a bit of a square peg in a round hole and had just found his niche position.
I've been very impressed with the lad in this cup run

We need to concentrate on the Europa League and League Cup - we are not going to do anything in the league let's use that for Klopp to look at youngsters /fringe players and formations and decide who he's binning in the summer

There's no pace though is there? Not much tenacity and very little determination which I hope that Stewart can provide in the short term and if not him then a better player in the long term.
Our team would be transformed by someone like Kante or a younger Mascherano.
I don't think any of our current midfielders can fulfll the role well enough at the moment. None of them bar Lucas has any positional sense defensively and Lucas himself lacks pace and dynamism.

How many of our midfielders are opposition teams scared or wary of? Coutinho maybe but the rest of them aren't intimidating anyone. Coutinho not with his physical presence but with his abilty and none of the others have either.

Based on the performance of this season if we use youngsters/fringe players in the league and the first team in the cups we'll be 4th and trophy less.

People are over thinking this Stewart business- He's done really well when he's played and on current form he should be in the team before Can, Lucas and even Henderson - So play him and see what happens -

It certainly couldn't make our form in the league any worse.

In saying that - getting Sturridge & Origi back will give us options upfront again - which we badly need.

We're not getting top 4.

We're not getting relegated.

I don't want to be in the Europa League next season, but I want us to win the Capital One Cup - which puts is in.

Therefore - our ultimate aim for this season must now be to win the Europa League, thereby getting into Champions League.

Otherwise, a season out of Europe might be a good thing in the long run.

I think we should try and avoid the Europa league IMHO. It is without doubt advantageous in terms of league position not to have to play in it.

Unless of course we can win the fucker.. doesnt that get us into the CL??

Next season we need a new goaly and a new Striker... play the kids in the cups and keep the lads totally fresh for the league and see what happens.
