Taken from the offal:

Steven Gerrard has scored 42 away league goals for Liverpool. The only Reds players to score more away from Anfield in the Premier League era are Michael Owen (55) and Fowler (43).

He'll definitely overtake Fowler. Not sure he'll be able to catch Owen since he's scoring much less in open play nowadays. I think we'll have to get more people into the box to earn peno's for him to overtake Owen.

Gerrard tied Fowler with that penalty against Southampton. What a strike - Boruc got the direction and height about right and still had no chance at saving it.

43 away goals. Read that again. Lots of midfielders struggle to score even 43 league goals in their career.

I keep reading praise for Stevie's peno yesterday. Well, include me out - I'm not a fan of hitting them high at all. You drastically reduce your margin of error that way and I definitely don't want him to make a habit of it.

How do you figure that the odds are worse for hitting high? I reckon yeah there's more ways for you to miss (hit crossbar, hit it over versus a ground shot) but I figure there are also more vectors for the keeper to cover, even if he guesses correctly. A low shot for the keeper eliminates the bar and over problem, but it reduces the complexity for the keeper to very much a single vector or a smaller selection of vectors doesn't it?

The odds are worse because the natural tendency is to hit the ball upwards anyway so, as I said above, you're reducing your margin of error. Any advantage the keeper might get from the kicker reducing the number of vectors will be more than compensated for by the fact that he has to dive downwards from a standing position.

If he hadn't gone high then there's a good chance it'd have been saved. Given the look of confidence as he stepped up, and his overall record with them, I'd say it was never in doubt. Great pen, end of.

No, there isn't, precisely because of his overall record which, as you suggest, is excellent. I didn't doubt he'd score either FWIW, but I'll be interested to see if he takes more in the same style and I would not be happy to see him do so.

I'm basing that on how decent Boruc's dive was. In any case, I can't see it being a regular occurrence to be honest, I just think he was brimming with confidence and trying to mix it up so that he isn't really readable.

I read somewhere (here?) we had the third youngest average aged squad. Brill news for the future.

In the past couple of days I saw the complete list somewhere - and I think we were lowest - but there really is nothing in it (15-16 clubs covered by 12 months difference with only 3-4 being outside that). I think rather than Squad they should give 1st team + bench, because many of those squad fillers, for most clubs, are youth players who won't figure in the actual 1st team beyond a sub appearance or two but really bring down the average age.

Had it been a pressure situation, I'm sure Stevie would have placed it low. I don't think he will make a habit out of it.

Hence our supplying half the England team tonight against Denmark.

Oh, and the Denmark captain. Who darn nearly cut Wilshere off at the knee.
