Swansea v Liverpool Match Thread

So, how many of you want us to play in the EL next season? If you ask me it is the CL or no European football at all next season. I want us to be able to concentrate on the league if we don't win the EL this season and qualify for the CL.

If you don't win the EL then it is shit competition.

Without EL football next season Klopp will be able to concentrate on signing quality instead of quantity. If we play in the EL next season then we need a bigger squad and that means that money will need to spent on quantity players.

Yeah Arn. The EL is shit.

Apart from that match against Dortmund being one of the best games I've ever seen, and the main reason that when my seaso renewal dropped on Friday I clicked the button and bought the fucker instantly. But yeah, I hope we come 8th

I'm not King. I'm only a Liverpool fan that support the club and our players. Instead of moaning I support and defend them. If Klopp make as bad results as Rodgers his first three and half seasons then I will start to question him, not before that. I will give him and the players time.

DEFINITELY a KING

Dont worry Lucas will help us achieve that.

And that, right there, is why I still hate the Europa League. Even despite us being two wins away from winning the thing, I still hate it.
But we could easily have been confronted with a similar turnaround if we played Champions League on the Wednesday and had an early kick off Saturday morning.
I don't see anyone not wanting to play in the champions league because of limited time before the next premier league match.

It rarely makes as big a difference though, I have no idea why.

Possibly because you've played less games along the way, possibly cos if you're in the CL your team is of higher calibre & has a better squad, as well as having to expand less energy against league teams as they see more of the ball?

You often hear commentators wondering the same thing, champions league teams don't seem to suffer the same European hangover.

I seem to recall reading that it is a bit of an urban myth that teams in the Europa League suffer worse premier league results than those in the Champions league after a midweek game allowing for the fact that sometimes English Europa League teams are considerably weaker that their Champions league counterparts.
As far as I know we have played one tie, ie two games more, than if we had got to the Champions league semi's this season

I suppose most champions league teams are also closer to England than what some of the EL teams would be. It's only two hours from Liverpool to Madrid, whereas it's about a four or five hour flight to some of the eastern European teams.

Can't see any post-match thread or ratings, so I'll put mine here.

We've been through the general muck-raking and match analysis in detail, so I'll keep this brief: we were fucking shit and we have a poor squad. More than half of the players on the pitch have no business being Liverpool players. Klopp needs a shitload of cash in summer to fix this shit.

We're 8th. The same position we finished under Rodgers last year. Some progress. As soon as the team was announced it was obvious this was going to be another of those Klopp disasters in this hugely disappointing Premiership campaign , like Watford, Newcastle, West brom, West Ham, Southampton and Palace.

Ward (7) The pick of the bunch, really. He made several good stops and looked a far better bet than Bogdan, whose career is over and should never have started. Will be a useful number 2 for our new goalkeeper next season.

Clyne (5) Pretty average. He was limited in his attacking due to the speed and danger of Montero, and while he worked hard, he was never dominant or in control.

Skrtel (4) Another below-par display, he fluffed one or two clearances and wasteful in possession.

Lovren (4) Weak tackling, poor positioning, jittery and error-prone. Improved in the second half, but that wasn't hard.

Smith (3) All over the place like a mad woman's piss. His sending off was almost a relief as he couldn't do any more damage.

Stewart (4) A dreadfully ordinary and limited footballer, he was horribly exposed here and should never play for the first team again

Chirivella (2) Powder-puff physicality, aimless movement and passing was disgusting. A truly horrible performance which rightly led to his half-time substitution.

Ibe (3) Seems to be entirely lacking a brain. Gets the ball, runs. That's it. Horrific display.

Ojo (5) Plenty of promise, but chose the wrong option or fucked up his delivery almost every time. The only young outfield player on the pitch who looks like he might have a future at Liverpool.

Coutinho (4) Still way below his best, he was a liability at times and lost possession regularly.

Sturridge (5) Mediocre performance. He was typically slick on the ball, but too often wasted the opportunity. One delightful chipped effort was not enough really. But in his defence, he did have one of the worst midfield's in Liverpool history playing behind him.

Subs:

Benteke (6) Nice headed goal, should have started.

Lucas (4) Dreadful. Came on to add solidity, then was laughably robbed for their third goal. Slow, cumbersome, shit. Get rid.

If you look at the teams that do worse in the league when competing in the Europa League, it tends to be those teams that over achieved by qualifying. It doesn't tend to affect the more established clubs at all.

I'd rather we played as many games as possible every year, because it means we're doing well. It's down to Klopp and his team to manage the squad for those games.

I agree with you Gerry but I do understand the dislike that locals have for the increased number of Sunday games which it entails and the disruption to traveling to games etc

Ward is off to Huddersfield on loan next season.
